Folks - JUST found out that do to some issues at Glen Park Library Branch we will NOT
WILL NOT
Be able to meet at this location tomorrow.
I know... I know...
I tried the local Recreation Center in Glen Park but they are booked and charge a fee.
Also it being Pride weekend as well I have been hearing a steady rush of conversation on the crowded public transportation issues starting tonight and going through sunday due to various celebrations, the parade and after parade celebrations especially with the recent passing of the Gay Marriage bill.

Heya folks - Just reaching out to see if there is any interest in setting up a meeting for June at the Glen Park Branch Library. At this moment, the room is available for the following saturdays: June 21st and the 28th and July 12th. The room fits about 50 people. I'm assuming its a standard setup of a few long tables and chairs all around. I was thinking around 1pm start to around 4 pm finish?
Location and Restaurants and Barthttp://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&hl=en&geocode=&q=Restaurant&near=2825+Diamond+St,+san+francisco,+ca&sll=37.734357,-122.433958&sspn=0.009384,0.023432&ie=UTF8&ll=37.73412,-122.433958&spn=0.002346,0.005858&z=18
Brion's up for giving a preview of his Wikimania presentation on the tech status of things.
The room is free so long as we don't need any special equipment or are planning a banquet. I'm still trying to get a hold of the local branch to see if its ok to bring a brown bag lunch without the $100 fee for set/cleanup, if they say we have to at least pay the $25 fee (Coffee and Pasteries) then I'll pay that and accept any voluntary donations for reimbursement to share the cost.
Please reply back to the group if you're interested in this location and a particular date.
We'll also look to plan a followup after Mania meeting in early August if there is interest.
Thanks!

It's too short notice to try to change location tomorrow. Maybe we should prospone the meet until next week, or something like that.

Very Sad!! I didn't even see the emails either. It is a good thing Cary told me. But yes - I'd say all is off. I highly doubt anyone will be available next weekend (4th of July and all) and after that alot of people will be gone for Wikimania. So much for #6!
Related note: In case people didn't notice. I already created meetup #7 and put it for "August" in the vain hope that if we start talking about it now - we can get something planned and scheduled plenty in advance. Exact dates are unimportant this far out - but a finding a meeting space is key - as usual. Any suggestions are welcome. Maybe the library again - if we can guilt them into not canceling on us at the last minute.... Again.

Pish posh! I'll still be at the library at 1:00, maybe out in front. I'll have a Wikipedia pin on.
This map: http://maps.google.com/maps? f=l&hl=en&geocode=&q=Restaurant&near=2825+Diamond+St,+san+francisco,+ca& sll=37.734357,-122.433958&sspn=0.009384,0.023432&ie=UTF8&ll=37.73412, -122.433958&spn=0.002346,0.005858&z=18 shows lots of nearby eateries.
If no one else shows up, I'll just work on my laptop.
Ben
P.S. If anyone wants to know where I or others have gone, feel free to call me on my cell at (415) 505-1533.

Are you open to the idea of a private/corporate space? My workplace (Metaweb, who run http://freebase.com/, which uses Wikipedia heavily) recently hosted an OpenStreetMap event during Where 2.0, and I'm pretty sure would be open to the idea of hosting Wikimedians. We have meeting room facilities (projectors, etc), tables, chairs, comfy seats and sofas, kitchen space, etc. It's downtown near Montgomery BART.

RCC 2008 (which wasn't "Wikimedia", but Wiki's in general) was hosted at a private wiki-company. One of the previous meetings was also done at the Internet Archive (I wasn't there). So, I personally have no problem with meeting in a private space. Most of our meetups are on weekends - which maybe a problem for companies though.

Thanks for offering, Kirrily!
Having done bits of work for Metaweb, I can vouch for both the people and the space. It's not far from all sorts of public transport, and so is a good choice for BART, MUNI, and CalTrain riders. And although it's nominally a corporate space, it doesn't have a particularly corporate feel. I'm all for it!

For what it's worth...
Sue Gardner indicated on Friday that she might be interested in making the Wikimedia Foundation office available for SF meetups, as long as it wasn't too often. It probably has to go through discussion with others in the office about logistics and actual approval, but this may be a good choice. The office is near South Park in SOMA, there are food and good bars nearby, etc.

That's a great option to have.
Having been to both Metaweb and WMF offices, I'd WMF is better suited to small groups (~10), while Metaweb can accommodate larger ones. What's the kitchen area seat, Kirrily? And more importantly, what size group are you comfortable having come by?

Both sound good to me also. With a bit of notice, the Internet Archive in the Presidio also has made a standing offer that we can meet there.
Finding a good restaurant/pub with a room we could meet in for lunch or dinner is also something to look into for future events.
Lots of options! :) phoebe

We've had 70+ people in that space before but it was a bit crazy ;) We'd be absolutely comfortable with up to 30, I think. As numbers grow, it's really just a matter of making sure that some more of our staff attend to keep an eye on things. Since they'd probably be pretty interested anyway, this shouldn't be too big a deal.
I need to talk to our office admin guy and make sure it's OK. It would help if I had a date to work with, though "a Saturday in August" is a good start.
