The winter weather's beginning to clear up, and even the Wikimedia staff are crawling out from under the rubble of our office move...
I'm thinking it's about time for another San Francisco Wiki(m|p)edians meetup!
There's a lot of smart, active people in this town. Let's find a clear weekend, get out there and kick some wiki butt!

Funny you should ask....
A Dutch documentary filmmaker will be in town next weekend. I guess he is interviewing Jimmy and several other individuals for his project. He's also interested in meeting Wikipedians, however. I know it's short notice -- and I don't know if anyone is interested in getting filmed -- but I suggested having a little meetup might be the best way to get people in one place. He is free and in SF on Saturday only.
What do people think?
Aside from that, though, we should definitely have a meetup regardless!

I believe this Saturday evening is also the big New Year's festival in Chinatown.

Saturday afternoon sounds good, how about someplace less noisy than the ferry building?

This weekend is also Wondercon so some locals might have other plans. What about the first Saturday in March? This will give time to find just the right place and get it into people's schedules.

I wouldn't suggest this Saturday (it's inconvenient for me as well) EXCEPT for this film crew that is in town. If there is any interest in meeting with them, it needs to be this weekend.
Otherwise, March sounds lovely.

I'm certainly up for a meeting on Saturday, formal or otherwise.
This Saturday is impossible for me, unfortunately. Previous commitment I can't cancel :-(

Yes, ok. Any ideas for where to go??? I would love to meet up for lunch with a handful of people tommorow. Casual setting, quiet, someplace that we could do a little filming (maybe get some of those laptop action shots that computer documentaries always seem to have!)
I should be available late morning -- early afternoon tommorow (I have an evening commitment). Anyone want to go for lunch with me?

For lunch in SF, there are too many places to go. If you guys can throw together some criterion -- Mediterranean? Chinese? Pizza? -- I can give you pointers to places with decent location and pricing.
Mediterranean sounds great! Brion and I are pretty much up for anything. I imagine a price range would be in the $10-$15 for food and drink per person? We've been pretty homebound since I broke my foot in mid January.
Cary - maybe we can carpool it?
Anyone a member of Mechanics' Institute Libraryhttp://www.milibrary.org/index.html? I do believe that one of the benefits of membership is to have access to conference rooms for meetings. Not sure if there is a fee involved.
Do any of the public libraries offer meeting rooms for events like this? I'll see what I can dig up on line for future reference.

Hello lovely people,
The Internet Archive has offered meeting space. It's quiet, private, and Paul and Brewster will be around in the middle of the day. Apparently the only problem is there aren't places nearby for lunch on a Saturday, but we could get sandwiches to bring in?
What do you guys think? Restaurant, or IA, or some happy combination?

I think the Internet Archive is a good idea. Where is it?
As far as restaurants go, the constraints mentioned earlier in this thread -- up to fifteen dollars a person, maybe mediterranean -- could be Pizzeria Delfina, in the Mission. I hesitate to go on and on, though, since location is important and I don't know it yet ;)

The Archive is in the SF Presidio, directions are here (scroll down for bus info etc): http://www.archive.org/about/contact.php
As I mentioned to Phoebe, the closest restaurants and stores are about a 10 minute walk from the IA. However, if the weather is good, the walk through the Presidio is pleasant. Or we could bring sandwiches or whatever back to the IA.
Within the Presidio, there are a few restaurants; but I've never been to any of them. To the South and West, on Clement, there's a bunch of Chinese places (in "Chinatown 3.0") -- some of them quite good, like the Buddhist Vegetarian Bok Choy Garden. To the South and East, at around Divisadero and Page, there's the Little Chihuaha, a very reasonably priced, good quality Mexican place -- sustainable ingredients, not too much cheese, no more than ten dollars a person.
The Public library system does have meeting rooms at their branches and the main library. This would require a dedicated effort to get it started, application and rules to review and submit. Most rooms are free unless there are special AV and food needs.
http://sfpl.org/librarylocations/mtgrms/rules.htm While its not enough time for tomorrow, this could be a topic of discussion if folks were interested in getting a consistent, chatable and easy to get to meeting space that could be upgraded as AV needs require. I'm sure there are some fabulous places to dine in and around most of the branches, especially the main branch. We also might be able to get in on their events calendar for more exposure and who knows where that could lead eh? On Fri, Feb 22, 2008 at 11:17 AM, Marti Pierce marti.pierce@gmail.com wrote:

Hi everyone, Hope you don't mind me barging in in the group. Thank you for all the efforts to come our way for a tv-shoot tomorrow. For our director Ice van Veelen I was already trying to get into SFPL but there are heavy filming restrictions. I have now asked Sherri Eng of Library PR if the Meetings Rooms are a possibility. The $64,000 question is whether we can do an event tomorrow midday without getting rained on severely...
Weather usually doesn't factor that significantly into planning here, but the storm coming in on Saturday is predicted to be strong enough to somewhat disrupt travel.

It was raining pretty hard last time we met up; didn't stop us then. But they did say it will rain pretty hard. I usually take BART when I go to these events, and I suggest those of you who try to cross the Bay Bridge to do so as well, since you won't have to worry about the winds and such. Just make sure you bring a good umbrella though.

I imagine a price range would be in the $10-$15 for food and drink per person? We've been pretty homebound since I broke my foot in mid January. Cary - maybe we can carpool it? Anyone a member of Mechanics' Institute Library <http://www.milibrary.org/index.html> ? I do believe that one of the benefits of membership is to have access to conference rooms for meetings. Not sure if there is a fee involved. Do any of the public libraries offer meeting rooms for events like this? I'll see what I can dig up on line for future reference.
So this is a sure thing? What time are we going to do it?
Thanks.

Cool! Alas, I am a little clueless as to good places to go. Any ideas, anyone?
For lunch in SF, there are too many places to go. If you guys can throw together some criterion -- Mediterranean? Chinese? Pizza? -- I can give you pointers to places with decent location and pricing.

Perhaps the coffee shop under Grace Cathedral or the Wilsey Conference Halls next to that. That's the quietest place I can think of. I won't be able to attend as I left Wikipedia for Lent.

Well, since the Wikimedia Foundation is based right in SF now, perhaps you can meet there.

If it is early enough in the day, I would be able to come. (I have to be back in the East Bay at 3:30 pm.)

Actually, the offices will, in fact, be closed on Saturday (sorry!). I do believe, given the rain, that our Chinese New Year plans are going to be canceled and we might be able to at least attend an early meetup.
What kind of food are you wanting to eat? I mean, there is a few restraunts on New Montgomery such as the Chipotle? As well as the row of them on Columbus? However, I don't know of where to find a quiet place, since everywhere I go seems crowded.
