Do we have somewhere a message like this? "Sorry, we don't have «page» in $LANG language, yet. You can read it on -XXZ -XXY
You can [help translating it]"
Also, what's the best way to add new messages? Create a new MediaWiki extension, even if it is going to have little to no real code?

I remember that there was cross-wiki search once and it was disabled for some reason, at least on Wikimedia projects.

I'm not sure that I understand the question. Messages can be added to MessagesEn.php (and MessagesQqq.php!) when it's relevant. See https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/L10n#Adding_new_messages
Does that answer the question? Or did I misunderstand something?

Don't worry, it's intended for translated pages in the same wiki, not for doing a cross-wiki search (if you're thinking the same one as me, it wasn't never a full cross-search, but a search in wikis listed in the same pool).

Yes, that those messages wouldn't be in use by MediaWiki core, so they wouldn't go there. :)
I know how to create an extension, and messages provided by the extension are obviously made available. But, does it make sense to create an extension which is only messages?

Well, apparently it does: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:WikimediaMessages

I suppose this is related to the WLM thread? Where do you want to add such a message?

I didn't realise you were also involved in WLM, Nemo. Yes, I actually intend to use it for the WLM website. Some of the messages that would be interesting to translate would be terms like Contest, Participate, Rules, Monuments, News, Donate... (instead of translating them ourselves and -presumably- other chapters too)
If it was going to an extension, it could provide a parserfunction listing the participating countries of each year, in order to give it a bit of code, but little more. It would mostly be messages.
Regarding the translations, there is some rewriting on the wiki, so translation to code «xy» of page [[Foo Bar]] is saved as [[Foo Bar (xy)]]. This works fine as far as a translation to that language exists. In case it doesn't, I wanted to show a like that instead of the generic "There's no page with this name". I can obtain the (short) list of translations with a query such page_title LIKE 'Foo Bar (%'. But I'd like to fetch the text from TWN. Alternatively, I could put that page search code in an extennsion, but it's probably too specific for being useful to anyone else.
