Normally not, PHP allows multiline string literals.
How can I edit the file?
After editing the file in any plain-text editor (e.g. Notepad, not Word), check for its validity using php -l MessagesXx.php (well, if you have PHP installed, which you probably have if you are running a wiki).

Please, do not use Notepad. I have used it with LocalSettings.php and it didn't work as Notepad inserts some invisible characters at the beginning of the file, thus breaking the php file. I don't know if this relates to Messages*.php files, but just to be on the safe side, use a different editor (jedit proved to be the best for me while I was on WinXP)
