Moin, I am wondering, whether it really is correct, that there is no documentation of function or use of the single MediaWiki messages? If you try to translate messages without knowing anything about their context, this really is hard. Is there anywhere in this big wiki world any page, where I at least can see, which Special pages or whatever use these messages?

I am afraid not, which is understandable if you consider how quickly the messages evolve—the page would get obsolete very soon.
I always look into the source code to see where a message is used, but that requires at least a basic PHP (and probably also MediaWiki) knowledge.

Because of this problem, Siebrand suggested Use case descriptions http://nike.users.idler.fi/betawiki/K%C3%A4ytt%C3%A4j%C3%A4:Siebrand#Use_cas... They're now available for many (though not all) messages on Betawiki.

Perhaps the developers, who introduce or change those messages, should document their use. They should be in the position to do this accurately and effectively. Those use case descriptions are nice, but most messages, which need them, don't have them.

The problem is getting them to do it; half the new committers often fail to update the release notes, let alone remember to document stuff. I do try to make a note of various things I alter, although sometimes I lapse, of course, but for this to work, we'd need to convince all the committers of the benefits of doing so.
