Dear all,
I'm so curious to know more about what everybody does within their education programmes around the world, especially after hearing about what Jan Ainali at Wikimedia Sverige has told me about the education day in Milan.
So, I thought about how we best may share this, and this may definitely not be the absolutely best idea but I'll just send it out to you to see what you might think.
So, I've put the people together that I know work with education and in or in close collaboration with Wikimedia in one or another way, in groups of three. You may see this here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ?key=0Askq1OTvde8HdFdjMURpNXNyY1JXaDdPeTRFbS1tMUE&usp=sharing
So my first idea is to simply have a hangout in these groups where we share ideas about our various education programmes. It would be great to hear something about:
* Structure of the programme * Current activities * Successes * Mistakes (or rather, things to learn from)
Please do add any aspects you may find relevant for a talk like this.
I would suggest that these conversations are to take place in May if that may be possible, and that we briefly summarise what we have learned during these talks so we can all take part of everybody's conversations. The reason I only put three per groups is to make it easier to find a time that works for everyone, and also to make time for dialogue which is may be better with fewer people.
Please do let me know what you think about this, and if someone is forgotten, please do add yourself to the list, we may be four in groups (and it is four in a group already).
And do you generally find this to be a good idea?
My hope is that this will have us learn from each other, and to feel more connected with our various educational efforts and ideas.
I wish you all a great weekend!

Oh, and I totally forgot to tell you how I put the groups together! I have tried to not have two people from the same country but to make it as 'mixed' as possible, by country and continent.

Hi Sophie,
I support your idea.
Also I want to hear more about implementation of the MediaWiki extension - Education Program [1], as I know only in en.wikipedia is implemented, and it is used in US, CA, GB, and Somalia? I really want to learn more about this extension, from technical view point and from the view point of practical implementation.

I'm happy to answer what I can about the extension.
You can see the translation status for it here: http://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special:MessageGroupStats&languag...
(If your language isn't fully translated, you can translated it at translatewiki.)
The extension has some fundamental technical shortcomings related to the way MediaWiki handles the content of course pages, and we're recommending that other wikis not start using it until after those get fixed. For those interested in the details, here is the tracking bug for that set of problems: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43975 . All the "Depends on" bugs are the issues that we're going to fix within the next few months.
The look of the extension will also be upgraded in the next few months. You can see a rough partial roadmap for what we plan to work on here: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Education_Program/Roadmap (If you have ideas for it, please talk with me, post to this mailing list, or add things to the ideas list at the bottom of the roadmap.)
Even though we're suggesting the extension not be used for more education programs until around August, you can--and probably should--start the process soon if you think you'll want it on your home wikis. The basic requirement before it can be deployed is to demonstrate consensus on your wiki that it is wanted. I did that on English Wikipedia with this Request for Comment: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Education_Progra... don't need to have an RfC as complicated as that one; a simple "yes/no" discussion would suffice if you want the default configuration.) If you begin this process, please let me or LiAnna know (or better yet, post to this list) so we can keep an eye on it and document how it goes so that others can learn from it.
If you want to play around with the extension, you can do so on test2.wikimedia.org: http://test2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Courses Email me with your username if you would like any of the user rights on test2 so that you can create course pages, etc.
This page documents how we're using it on English Wikipedia, including the "course page wizard" template I built to make it easier to create decent course pages: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Course_pages (The "course page wizard" is sort of a hack; later on, I hope to build something more user-friendly into the extension itself.)
Cheers, Sage

It's currently not internationalisable but they're working on it (I've not seen a plan yet though).

Thank you for doing that, Sophie. This is what I think we can call peer to peer collaboration. :)
I hope the seniors people from WMF (I mean specificaly the learnings group inside the organization and the education program director) can hear you to learn from this initiative and how we can improve it. I think this is a good way to decentralize the program and an excelent way to learn from each other. I can commit myself to meet people from my group in May, sure!
I am going to e-mail them as soon as possible to see when we can discuss these topics (SusikMkr, Kiril and Leigh - just changed LiAnna to another group where was Leigh, since LiAnna has been collaborating a lot with Brazil). I need their e-mails as well and we should create a closed page to gather all these contact.
By the way, as I talked to some of you (WMF colleagues and friends from the movement working with education), my best experiences in sharing learnings was when we had smaller meetings with 2 or 3 people discussing their programs. When we had those meetings full of people when each one had only 5 to 10 minutes to speak, they seemed usually useless, mainly we need to go deep and you had to say important things in a hurry.
Let's each other be proactive and try to set our meetings in May.
P. S. I am not sure everybody from these groups are participating of this mailing list.
P. P. S. I will propose a similar *motto* for the international council of local groups of Open Knowledge Foundation. Thanks again, Sophie!

I started adding my own e-mail, the country I am based and the organization I work to. People reading this thread could do the same, if you don't mind to have your e-mail there.
Otherwise, we can start a closed document later. From my group I only have the e-mail of Leigh, but I'll try to find the other two.

Great! If you want to turn it on sooner rather than later, I can go ahead and file a bug to have it enabled. As we've noted before, the extension still has some significant bugs that we are working on, so you may want to spend some time testing it before using it for real classes. But if you're willing to live with the bugs for now, it probably won't take long to get it turned on.

Thank you for this information, Sage. There is interest in it in the Hebrew Wikipedia, too. We already translated and proofread most of the interface. I passed the email on to the people who are interested in it, so they would assess the status.

Hi Sage, ty for information. Translation status in Macedonian is 100%. I think that this extension can help to our education program and I just start process/discussion at mk.wikipedia.

If you want to play around with the extension, you can do so on test2.wikimedia.org: http://test2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:CoursesEmail me with your username if you would like any of the user rights on test2 so that you can create course pages, etc.
This page documents how we're using it on English Wikipedia, including the "course page wizard" template I built to make it easier to create decent course pages: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Course_pages(The "course page wizard" is sort of a hack; later on, I hope to build something more user-friendly into the extension itself.)
Cheers, Sage

As far as I know, the MediaWiki Extension is still under construction
(although it is possible to use it); someone (probably LiAnna) said in Milano that the final version should be available in August 2013.
It's currently not internationalisable but they're working on it (I've not seen a plan yet though).

Hi Sophie, and everybody
I'm a member of Wikimedia Argentina, working around education initiatives. I couldn't make it for the Milan meeting, but I'm very interested about sharing experiences and activities in the education field. We have recently started here a "education program" and we are making our first "organic" steps. More info at: http://eduwiki.wikimedia.org.ar/wiki/P%C3%A1gina_principal
So, I'm not sure how can I participate in this conversations... but for sure I will like to know about other education programs and ways of working in other chapters.
Best,
Hi Lila!
How great that you're starting a project in Argentina! Please do put your name down in one of the groups on this list:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pHrsPGGspOw9tVVyMxlhfJQryJhPFx3DXJy-jS1p... usp=sharing
The idea is to have one skype/hangout during May and to take notes about this session of three to four people so we all can take part of what you've spoken about and for you to take part in everybody else's conversations.
:)

Hi Tom,
I would like to suggest that each group try to cover also its measure of success, if any. If there is not, no problem, but let us know. I also think it is important to mention planned activities and a high leve roadmap for them (like: in the next 6 months we will do that in the year try to expand in this or that way). Thus I'd change Sophie's suggestion for each group cover the following:
A) Structure of the programme and measure of success (if any) B) Current activities and planned ones (high level roadmap) C) Successes D) Mistakes (or rather, things to learn from)
By the way, if you have some report page (learning, structure etc.), similar to what I tried to do here
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Brazil_Program/Education_program
There is a general page for learnings and one for each phase of the pilots here in Brazil
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Brazil_Program/Education_program/Learning
Please, add on the google docs Sophie has started our links - adding mine later.
