Forwarding this news for those of you not on the Announce list -- see below
for Anasuya's announcement. Apologies for the cross-post.
As someone who worked with Rod for the last four years on the Wikipedia
Education Program, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank him for all
the strategic work, problem solving, training development, and budget
wrangling he’s done behind the scenes that have made the Wikipedia
Education Program what it is today. Much of this work isn’t visible to
people outside the education team, but it needs to be done, and Rod’s hard
work in these areas has affected all aspects of the Wikipedia Education
Program.
I’ve had the privilege of working with Floor, Tighe, and Anna over the last
several months, and I know Rod leaves a great team in place who will carry
on our mission of getting contributing to Wikimedia projects into
educational settings worldwide.
Rod, thanks for all your hard work over the last four years!

Another session I said I'd use this list to publicise is on badges:
https://wikimania2014.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education_Pre-Conference/Badges,_W…
This is now a scheduled 1 hour session for August 7, and the facilitator is
presumed to be Stevie Benton of Wikimedia UK.
The page itself is not a report on the workshop discussion last Sunday that
opened up the topic. The understanding of the participants in the small
group was that the Mozilla Open Badges specification allows things other
than email addresses as identifiers of persons. It happens that an email
address is the default, but the limitation is more custom than compulsion.
So in theory a badge could be awarded to a Wikimedia account.
The intention therefore is that interested parties should debate the topic.
Email is still going to be involved, in that the badge system operates by
sending out "claim codes" to those awarded badges. It is fairly obvious
that pseudonymous people on the projects would need a clear understanding
of the consequences of claiming a badge.
I know also that Stevie is interested in the practical, badgemaking side,
and has been talking to Mozilla about this aspect.
Charles
I'm new to this list, so hello all.
I'm writing in support of a proposal for a day-long event based around the
potential for reuse of Wikimedia UK Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). It
is a Moodle site hosted at
http://moodle.wikimedia.org.uk/
and requires account creation (it is also in beta right now: you can apply
to Stevie Benton <stevie.benton(a)wikimedia.org.uk> if you'd like to help
review it - should be done by Wikimania).
What the proposed Education Pre-Conference day, either on 6th or 7th August
ahead of Wikimania, is intended to do is to concentrate on possible reuses
of the content. The text content, in rough form, is posted to ModuleWiki,
i.e.
https://modulewiki.wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Main_Page
so that there is an easy way to get a rough idea of the scope of the site.
There are also images, around 400 quiz questions, and a quite intense use
of resource links to English Wikipedia manual and FAQ pages. Content is all
CC-by-SA.
The intended focus on the day would be
(a) subsets useful for particular education and training to be identified,
copied out and modified;
(b) translations made and potential translations identified;
(c) Quiz material reused.
The page for the event is
https://wikimania2014.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education_Pre-Conference/VLE_conte…
which needs work, clearly: please bear with me as I have three proposals
arising from the weekend that need attention.
Let me explain more about (c). There is a tool authored by Magnus Manske
called Wikisoba:
http://tools.wmflabs.org/magnustools/wikisoba.html
and it is an elegant lightweight way to author quizzes, using wiki page
sections. The quiz material "locked up" in Moodle can certainly be reused
using this tool, via wiki pages, so that a quiz then exists in a link to
Wikimedia Labs. Example I showed yesterday at the "Future of Education
Workshop" related to the Wikimania venue:
http://tools.wmflabs.org/magnustools/wikisoba.html#module=User%3ACharles%20…
Anyone, I claim, can learn the coding easily: that one is based on the
wikitext of
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Charles_Matthews/Barbican_quiz
which will be all the tutorial some people need. The 400 quiz questions on
the WMUK VLE can obviously be reused in other contexts, the Wikisoba tool
is fun to work with because you get quick results, and I hope we could get
quite a ways in this direction on the day.
Charles
Could you please share a link where the news on Serbia's Ministry of
education including the use of Wiki tools was published? (in English,
French or Spanish). I can't find any.

Below is my Wednesday e-mail which was denied from the conversation because
I sent it from an incorrect adress:

Congratulations to Israel and Serbia!
Now comes the tough job for you, though! You have to prove to the public &
to the teachers that Wikipedia is actually worth having in the school
curriculum. The worst scenario is teachers and parents going crazy about
the latest government's invention. You should really make Wikipedia as
beneficial to the students as possible, and you also need to prepare the
community for an enormous workload!
Not an easy job, but worth working for!
Good luck both of you, and I will be looking forward to the first results.

Hi all,
In consultation with The_Ed17, I'm starting work on a series of Signpost
reports regarding meta issues. One of the subjects I have in the queue is
the education program. I'd like to interview the following people:
1. A leader of the Wikipedia Education program in Serbia
2. A leader of the Wikipedia Education program in Israel
3. A leader of the Wikipedia Education program in Mexico
4. A leader of the Wikipedia Education program in the US or Canada,
preferably a regional ambassador or professor
5. Someone involved in the Global Education program at WMF
6. Someone at the Wiki Ed Foundation
If you're in one of these groups, you speak English at at least the EN-2
level, and you're willing to be interviewed or know who a good person to
interview would be, please email me off-list. Interviews will probably take
place in late June or sometime in July, and hopefully be no more than half
an hour each. The goal is to get a broad survey of Wikipedia's use in
education in this Signpost article. The article will probably be published
in mid to late July.
Thanks!
Pine
I haven’t been able to send this message to both mailing list, because of the security settings of WMF server

In my mind, at least, this is something of a gold standard ambition for our movement. It shows the content on the projects is of an educational quality, that it is taken seriously and that the value of the projects as serious educational tools is being recognised.

Subject: [Wikimedia Announcements] Israel’s Ministry of Education &
Wikimedia Israel Agree On New, Unique Initiative
To: wikimediaannounce-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
(Posted also on the Wikimedia Blog:

)
An agreement was met in a meeting between Rabbi Shai Piron, Israel’s
Education Minister, Jan-Bart de Vreede, Chair of the Wikimedia Foundation
Board of Trustees, Itzik Edri, Chair of the Wikimedia Israel Board and
Michal Lester, Executive Director of Wikimedia Israel, regarding a shared
cooperation with Wikimedia Israel in the framework of the ministry’s school
curricula in the coming years. Through the planned cooperation, history,
geography and science teachers will receive special professional training
to instruct students on how to contribute to new or incomplete Wikipedia
articles for which information is lacking or inadequate.
The Education Ministry will also examine the possibility of integrating
Wikipedia writing assignments in the teaching of research and community
involvement. They will also consider having students who speak additional
languages (primarily English and Russian) write Wikipedia articles about
Israel in those particular languages.
Education Minister Rabbi Shai Piron said, “It is important to us that the
education system in Israel leads in innovation and cooperating with
Wikipedia is a wonderful opportunity to think outside the box and enable
students in Israel to do things that make a difference from which others
can also benefit.”
Jan-Bart de Vreede, Chair of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees
said, “Israel is today among the leading countries in the integration of
Wikipedia in the education system and academia. I hope our joint work model
will also serve as an example to other education systems around the world.”
In the framework of cooperation that is already in place between Wikimedia
Israel and the Ministry of education, several pilot projects are being
conducted. The projects involve teacher training in good Wikipedia usage,
article composition, Wikipedia article writing by gifted high school
students and the teaching of proper Wikipedia usage to elementary
schoolchildren. It is worth mentioning that through cooperation with
academics in a variety of universities and colleges throughout Israel,
hundreds of articles are written each year by students in courses. Thus
students write Wikipedia articles as part of their degrees, sometimes even
in lieu of exams or final papers. The Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv
University recently conducted a special 2-credit course on the subject of
Wikipedia and medicine.
Survey results published last week as part of Wikipedia Academy 2014 Israel
revealed that 84% of the Israeli public relies heavily on Wikipedia and 74%
say that it provides all the information they need. Over one third of the
population expressed interest in learning to write for Wikipedia.
