On behalf of the Wikipedia & Education User Group, we cordially invite you
to attend our next Open Meeting on Monday, September 30, from 17:00 UTC to
18:30 UTC. While our name includes Wikipedia, we support the use of all
Wikimedia projects in educational contexts. Our guest speakers this month
showcase that well!
Florencia Claes, Communication and Journalism professor at Rey Juan Carlos
University in Madrid, Spain, will speak about how she's helped her students
contribute multimedia projects to Wikimedia Commons and add them to
Wikipedia, and her current project to collaborate with a documentary
filmmaking class to have students shoot videos for Commons. Florencia's
talk should be inspiring for anyone who has noticed a trend of students
preferring video over text, as we can all learn from her experiences!
Goran S. Milovanović, PhD, Data Scientist, Software Department, Wikimedia
Deutschland, will speak about the Wiktionary Cognate Dashboard , and how
it can be used for identifying places for improvement on your language
Wiktionary. This is super relevant for anyone running programs on

We are currently proposing to establish a new Wikimedia sister project called WikiJournal. https://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/WikiJournal_User_Group
Our goal is to bridge the academic-Wikipedia by enabling academics, scholars and professionals to contribute expert knowledge to the Wikimedia movement in the familiar academic publishing format while providing scholars with citable articles for performance evaluation.
Currently, WikiJournal is hosted under Wikiversity and is divided three journals (WikiJournal of Medicine, WikiJournal of Science and WikiJournal of Humanities). We are providing an avenue for academics to publish in open-access peer-reviewed journal with no publication cost (i.e. open access diamond/platinum). We accept articles in various formats: reviews (with many of them integrated directly into Wikipedia), original research, case studies, and images/galleries (with integration into Commons).
A full description of the sister project proposal can be found at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiJournal. You are also encouraged to provide feedback and comments about the proposal.
