dear all
i would like to know if you have ideas or experiences related to a Wikipedia game.
we are planning December 17th an event in Esino Lario[1] to involve young people in understanding Wikipedia. We expect a group of 24 kids between 9 and 14 years old for a 1H or 1H30 session. we think they are the best ambassadors.
we would to organize the event as a detective game/treasure hunt played in teams.
teams will be asked to answer questions and accomplish some tasks.
Using Wikipedia as a source of information
1) collecting simple information (i.e. are you older or younger of the Ninja Turtle/Wolverine? How many wives had Henry VIII and how many he made him killing?)
2) asking about who is someone (i.e. sport protagonist, singer...)
3) maybe checking a reference?
Discovering what Wikipedia is
1) understanding you can modify it
2) finding the help pages to answer a question
3) finding a mistake
Making an edit
1) maybe registering a personal account
2) asking a question to the community (?)
3) correcting a mistake
please let me know if you have any experience, documentation or recommendation about it.
thank you very much
iolanda/iopensa

Hi,
This is just a notification that the latest edition of The Wikinewsie Group
News newsletter can be found at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikinewsie_Group/Newsletter/6 .
Highlights:
The Wikinewsie Group News Edition 6, December 2, 2013
If you know anyone interested in Wikinews, journalism on Wikimedia projects
or The Wikinewsie Group, please encourage them to subscribe to the
newsletter by adding their name to the
list<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikinewsie_Group/Newsletter>
.
The Group
- Aff-comm recommended to the Wikimedia Foundation Board that The
Wikinewsie Group be recognised as a thematic organization in early November.
[1]<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Affiliations_Committee/Resolutions/The_Wiki…>
Education
- Wikinews Education
Program<http://blog.wikimedia.org/2013/12/02/wikinews-education-program/>
blog
post was published on Wikimedia's official blog.
- Discussions were had on IRC and Skype about the possibility of
installing the education extension on Ukrainian, Czech and Korean Wikinews.
While these could be used to potentially re-invigorate the local
communities and provide a cohort of new contributors, the limited
contributor base at the moment makes it difficult to implement. Greater
partnerships would need to be done with chapters to provide people to
assist local projects in running any education initiative.
- What is news?
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:What_is_news.pdf> handout
was created to supplement existing training materials as this is an area
where new contributors sometimes have issues on English Wikinews.
- Documenting your original sport
reporting<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Documenting_your_original_sport_report…>
was
created to supplement Wikinews Original Sport
Reporting<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikinews_Original_Sport_Reporting.pdf>.
Assistance is requested in translating these documents into Spanish and
Ukrainian.
Outreach
- LauraHale attended Wikimedia CEE Meeting
2013<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_CEE_Meeting_2013> in
Slovakia representing The Wikinewsie Group. She had conversations with
people from several chapters about the potential to do things with TWG
including the Polish, Estonian, Serbian, Czech and Ukrainian chapters.
Original reporting projects
- The paperwork was submitted at the end of the month to send five
Wikinews reporters to the Sochi Paralympic Games.
- Attempts were made to secure media accreditation for the Commonwealth
Games. The application was unsuccessful.
Sincerely,
Laura Hale
Hi all! I know plagiarism is something a lot of us face around the world,
so I thought you all might be interested in a blog post Sage Ross put
together about a plagiarism study we did on the English Wikipedia,
comparing student contributions to other editor cohorts:
http://blog.wikimedia.org/2013/11/20/how-to-make-a-wikipedian-angry/
I'm curious to see if this seems to hold true with your programs as well --
and does anyone have a great solution they've implemented that's cut down
on student plagiarism?

Hello all
I just wanted to share a link that I just found. It seems that Facebook is running a campaign to encourage Computer Science students to earn academic credits by contributing to opensource projects:
http://venturebeat.com/2013/11/13/facebook-partners-with-22-universities-to…!
I don't think Facebook should be allowed to do this. Imagine Facebook tried to pry its way into Wikimedia: I would expect all of us to revolt. A for-profit organization taking advantage of non-profit ideals??? MAKING PROFIT on non-profit? Would they even consider converting THEIR project into an open-source one? Of course not. Don't Mozilla and other Open Source Projects have ways of campaigning to attract CompSci students in their own organisations? Why does Facebook have to be the middleman? I find it revolting... if this is their idea of corporate social responsibility, I'll have to find away to stop using Facebook altogether in reply.
I don’t remember if I answered you James, but you’re totally right the problem was the browser, now we invite people to use only chrome or Firefix and we had no problem.
cheers
Charles

I wanted to thank wikimedia UK for organizing EduWiki 2013. I think they
did a fantastic job with the conference, managed to get the right people
there, opened doors to make things happen and left me motivated to continue
to do educational outreach for Wikinews. Combine that with good wifi and
decent food, I cannot wait for next year's conference. My only request
would be less rain.
Great job. :)
Sincerely,
Laura Hale

Many thanks for the good wishes for the EduWiki conference, Jami! It looks
like it's going to be a very exciting event.
I fully understand your need to reach your primary audience in the first
instance. I'm sure there will be other opportunities of the wider EduWiki
community to get involved in the live conversation too.
All the best!
