Hello all,
This Saturday, March 15, is a #FreeBassel day event in San Francisco. Some people from Creative Commons and the open community will join, and I hope to encourage a few Wikipedia edits. If you are interested in joining, it would be great to see some Wikipedians at the event. No editing experience is required: bring a laptop if you feel like editing, and feel free to bring a friend or attend if you just want to learn about Bassel.
If you don't know Bassel Khartabil (known online as Bassel Safadi): he is an open web developer and dedicated Internet volunteer who has been imprisoned (without charge) in Syria since March 2012. He was Creative Commons lead in Syria and started the first hackerspace (Aiki Lab, Damascus) in the Arabic-speaking world, in addition to numerous other open source and free culture projects (including Wikipedia). This Saturday 15 March marks the second anniversary of his arrest, as well as the third anniversary of the Syrian uprising. In support of Bassel and in efforts to raise the profile of his case, #FreeBassel day events are being held around the world to mark this date.

Cool! Is there a Wikipedia meetup page yet? Maybe we can develop a list of related articles to work on!
Hope that lots of folks can come, -- Phoebe
