From the foundation-l list.... anyone interested in participating in
this at a Bay Area museum? Are there any ones that would be particularly good to try and coordinate with?

Hi folks,
I'd like to let you folks know about "Wikipedia Loves Art", a scavenger hunt and free content photography contest project being organized at several museums worldwide in February.
So far these museums are confirmed: Brooklyn Museum in New York City Victoria and Albert Museum in London Los Angeles County Museum of Art Inadianapolis Museum of Art
But we're very interested in recruiting other institutions to join. There have been some rumblings in Australia, Hungary and Germany on that front, I think.
Here are the main relevant links:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/wikipedia_loves_art/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Loves_Art
These links also cover some of our past photography projects in New York City (which this project is partly an evolution on):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Takes_Manhattan/Spring_2008 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Takes_Manhattan http://www.streetfilms.org/archives/wikis-take-manhattan/
If anyone anywhere is interested in helping their local museum to participate in this project, please contact me and I'll help.
Thanks, Pharos

Hi!
Which local museums hosts art which is in public domain? Definitely not SFMOMA or San Jose Art Museum...
Eugene.

I've been told that the Federal Building has nice meeting rooms for very modest fees. If that's not enough info for people to find more details let me know off list and I'll contact my pal who recommended them to me.

For the Library, we'd need someone to contact them to check to see if it was ok. For the Fed Building, I'd say it is worth a few minutes to see what "modest fees" are.

The SF Public Library (main branch) has a procedure for booking its meeting rooms: http://sfpl.lib.ca.us/librarylocations/mtgrms/mtingrms.htm
They have quite a few rooms and I see that there is one that accommodates 40 available after 1 p.m. on February 28. An application has to be filled out and approved by them. Wikimedia seems to fit their criteria for eligibility. There is no charge unless one wants audio-visual equipment. There's a list of rules etc. on the site linked to above.
For the Library, we'd need someone to contact them to check to see if it was ok. For the Fed Building, I'd say it is worth a few minutes to see what "modest fees" are.

If nobody's got a firm location, I might recommend we just meet up for eats and drinks and talks at the 21st Amendment (543 2nd St), starting say 6pmish Thursday?
It's within walking distance of BART/Muni and Caltrain as well as our secret undisclosed location.

I'd love to go - I even had the day off work today - but one of my kids is ill and I'm stuck at home :(

Some people are going. I know for a fact Werdna and Trever are going to be there, and in all likelihood Tomasz is going with him. There are some others who are definitely going:

Ariel and I will be flying to Portland for RCC, or else we'd be there.
But don't take anything on this list as indication that there won't be anyone there; because from what I'm seeing, there will :)

Unfortunately I will be unable to attend. Very sad.

So the rumor is a couple people showed up and had a good time, though things weren't entirely organized. :D
I think it'd be great if we can get something fairly casual, but on a pretty regular schedule. It's ok if not everybody comes every time, as long as we've got a fun time and chance to talk shop for those who can make it each time.

I'm game. I also think the comp history museum would be cool - provided they wouldn't mind. I haven't been there yet.

Hi folks,
I'd like to let you folks know about "Wikipedia Loves Art", a scavenger hunt and free content photography contest project being organized at several museums worldwide in February.

These links also cover some of our past photography projects in New York City (which this project is partly an evolution on):

If anyone anywhere is interested in helping their local museum to participate in this project, please contact me and I'll help.
Thanks, Pharos

Well, wonderful news! I just got word that the SFMOMA is interested in participating, though I'm a little sceptical they have *any* public domain works in house (Henri Matisse is the closest I can come, and he died in 1954).
I'll send more details as soon as they get in touch with me.

I don't know if anyone has tried to get in touch with them, but the De Young apparently has a very open photography policy, and they also have a collection of American Paintings from Colonial onward. It seems like they have the perfect set up for Wikipedia Loves Art in SF as they're in the Bay Area, have a good camera policy, and public domain art of interest to our readers.
