For those that might possibly haven't have heard (that's quite a nice rock
you have there), Maker Faire ( http://wmf4.me/488AD ) is this weekend in San
Mateo. It'll be all sorts of awesome, and if you're in NorCal, you should
definitly be coming. Be warned though, 120k people are expected this year
(So the rumors go). Parking and traffic will be all sorts of hell.
If you've volunteered previously and haven't heard from Phoebe (or myself)
about what to do - please email me off list.
-Jon
PS. I'm CC'ing the -CA list since I think that list should be used for
things not chapter related too.

Hi!
Actually there are lot small street down to the south from El Camino
where parking is free :-) Of course you should pay attention to street
parking signs. Walk is not too long from there to Event Center.
Also I don't remember big traffic from 280/92 last year.

Ok, I was a lazy bastard, I apologize. I've finally gone and created the
shift signup for Maker Faire:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco/Maker_Faire_201…
Last year, we had the problem with having too many people at the booth first
thing in the morning and then not enough later in the day. This year we're
going to break things up into "shifts". I ask that you show up at least 10mn
early for your shift and be ready to stay around for the duration of your
shift (Obviously 100% is not required, but I ask that you don't plan on
wandering off for half the time of the shift). After the shift, you're more
than welcome to stay at the Faire (since you're already in the gate) and do
what ever your heart desires. If you've got a late shift, we can get you in
early to the Faire so you can "check things out", and then work later.
On the wiki, I put 3 "slots" per shift. Replace the slot with your name for
your desired shift. If your desired shift is already full, please consider
filling out the other shifts before "expanding" a filled shift.
FAQ's
Q) Can we have more than 3 people working at once?
A) Yes, but per my previous mention, I'd like to try and balance out the
volunteers.
Q) Can we work multiple shifts?
A) Of course. I'm not going to say no to anyone that wants to spend the
entire day with Phoebe and I, loosing our voice shouting over what ever
noisy thing we'll be next to this year.
Q) I'm not exactly sure when I can work/Your times don't work for me. What
can I do?
A) It's not a perfect system. If you're not sure, put yourself down as a
maybe. If you're travel arrangements preclude a specific time period
(you're going to be an hour late, etc), just note that too. We'll have
people there, I'm just trying to space them out over the entire day.
Q) Do I have to pay to get in?
A) No. We get a set of badges (generally not enough for everyone, but we
make it work), and we'll get you in and out of the "staff" entrance -
details to follow.
Q) Do I get to see the Faire?
A) Yes, the Faire is open 10am to 8pm Saturday and 10am to 6pm Sunday. We
only ask for 3 hours of that time.
Q) Can I come multiple days?
A) Yes
Q) What does a volunteer have to do?
A) Basically, you get to sit at our booth, look pretty, accept compliments
(people love Wikipedia) and tell people about Wikimedia/Wikipedia/All the
projects. If we're lucky, you might even convince a few people to edit.
We'll have "stuff" to give away (like flyers, and stickers and such).
Q) I'm confused, I have more questions
A) That isn't a question - but email the list, or me personally - I can tell
you about Maker Faire till your ears bleed.

Hi everyone!
Maker Faire 2010 is ONE WEEK FROM TODAY. Yikes!
* If you're interested in volunteering, please sign up soon for a shift:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco/Maker_Faire_2010
NOTE: this year we are trying to get people evenly distributed across
shifts, so please sign up for an empty one if you can.
* Volunteer info is posted here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco/Maker_Faire_201…
This is advice on what to bring, what to expect, and how to get there,
based on past years. Jon will be posting check-in info (what to do
when you arrive at the fair) soon.
NOTE 1: if you are new this year and I do not have your email address,
please send it to me -- I will be emailing out our cell phone #s & any
last minute info in a few days.
NOTE 2: This year I tried to write up some guidelines for how to
engage with passerby and what to expect, including dealing with
confrontations. Please read this. And for past volunteers: if you have
additional advice or changes, please edit.
see you soon!
Phoebe
For those that might have missed the first anouncement [1], we're trying to
put together and put on a regional Wiki-Conference. Something that warrants
an entire weekend, but isn't a huge production like Wikimania (though we can
use it as a prelude to a Wikimania bid). We're titling this the "West Coast
Wiki Conference 2011".
Why I'm harassing you all again, is we need help. Things are quiet so far,
but hopefully will pick up in the near future. Before we really get going,
it would be nice to see more interested parties get signed up on the purpose
made mailing list [2]. Our first and most important consideration (after
the date, since we've already got that) is going to be finding a venue.
January is a fair ways off, but we still need to work quickly to get the
basics sorted out so we can actually put this thing on. If you need more
info, you can always check Meta [3].
So please, please come help -- If you don't, I'll have to get even more
irritating.

Dear Geoff,
Thank you for your hard work on requesting the Chapter mailing list and for
serving as Chapter Contact. I hope you will conduct the business within
reason and evidence.
As for articles of incorporation and bylaws, we should adopt the Chapter
Committee's recommendation and Roberts Rules of Order, respectively,
coonducting meetings on IRC. Will you ask the Chapter Committee, please,
whether they recommend copying the Foundation's Articles of Incorporation,
and so send along a copy of them if they have them?
As for projects, I know the Google Summer of Code applications with positive
evaluations which did not get approved because the Foundation did not
request a sufficient number of slots are excellent projects for us to
attempt. I also think we should try to make better price/performance
Mediawiki servers than the German chapter has been able, as a long-term
hardware project goal.
Discussion? Please reply and forward to the new list.
Regards,
James Salsman

All,
We've talked about the idea of having a "mini-conference" over a couple
different meetups, most notably in the February meetup at the Foundation
offices. It just so happens that it came up again at today's meetup and
we've finally decided: we're going to do it.
We're aiming for an unconference style gathering, bigger than a meetup,
smaller than Wikimania. Hopefully in the 100 people range. It will be here
in the Bay Area, but we're calling it the "West Coast Conference" because
we're hoping to attract people from beyond our little neck of the woods. We
hope to get a few decent keynotes in there, and some of the "unconference"
talks pre-planned. That way people will have be able to see what is going
on (partially) in advance and know if they want to come. Obviously this is
still very much in the planning stage, but that being said it will be held
January 15 & 16, 2011. This is MLK Jr weekend, and it also happens to
coincide with Wikipedia Day.
More details will be sent out as we figure them out, and posted to the Wiki
page (on meta, link below). Phoebe will also be sending out her half of the
information in the next day or so (She actually takes notes, handy).
Additionally, since some people get upset with the SF list gets busy with
chatter they aren't interested in, we've setup a separate mailing list. If
you're interested in the on-goings of this conference, want to help get
involved, etc... please sign up for the list (link below). Some
"Announcements" will still be sent to the SF list about this topic, for
those not terribly interested.
Thanks-
-Jon

"This email should not be used to sue me" -- Bawolff
I thought I could make 1pm, but my commitments later in the afternoon
involve some preparation I didn't know about, which will take such
that I can't really be in SF past 1:30, so I'm going to skip this one.
Here's an update on my assignments for the Maker Faire things. First,
time lapse article videos: I wasn't able to make them, but I found
some which are suitable:
http://vimeo.com/6463465 (this one is fairly legible, unlike most of the rest)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrCQ9dUsfqUhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8O-hv3w-MUhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIUiYMU_NHMhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0BET04GR8Yhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Le5tr4ZxXvc
Some of the YouTube videos have higher-than-default resolutions in
which they are somewhat legible, and they are all probably useful for
showing the gist of how an article evolves.
As for the globe donation jar, I still have an inquiry out on a 25cm
clear plastic globe which I need to follow up on because so far
there's been no reply. If that fall though, do people think these
4-inch globes are too small:
http://www.partypalooza.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code…
Those are inexpensive enough I will probably just get a couple to have
just in case, but I'm concerned they are too small to be practical.
I do have pages for handouts which need to be printed on colored card
stock at Kinkos and sliced up into handouts, and a template for
notecards which we can hand out to passers by asking them to write
short "articles" on the other Maker Faire exhibits, and return them to
the booth to help create a "MakerFairePedia" on Wikisource; I'll send
the files for those things to Jon later on.
Sorry I can't be there.

James Salsman
