Hi,
Wikipedia zero has been operational inGhanaa for some time. Are there any stats related to how many are making use of it, and if so, where can they be found?

Hello Rexford,
I think this is a great ask, a few weeks back a Wikimedian doing a research was in Ghana doing some research and we had an opportunity to test Wikipedia zero on our MTN both times there was a bit of deduction but very minimal. He asked me to do further research into what we where suspecting. But from then till date I haven't had the time to do that. Maybe we can write to MTN through the User group if they can help with that. Would be great though.
Best. Justice.

Is there supposed to be a deduction at all?

So from what we know there isn't supposed to be a deduction at all for Wikipedia zero.
Kind of shocked the deductions happened.

Hi Rex and Justice,
I am commenting here based on my experience with Wikipedia zero in Nigeria. This work perfectly well with Airtel network in Nigeria. I am not sure Wikipedia zero works on MTN network in Nigeria but the deduction you experience may be as a result of other applications on your device that requires internet data to run. I doubt the deduction is from your use of Wikipedia zero.
Regards,
Isaac.

AFAIK, it hasn’t worked in a long time. Last time I checked was a week ago.
Aside, the New Readers report the WMF did showed an increase in number of readers in the countries that they researched (where Zero was available also): Nigeria, Brazil and India I think. I noticed however that there was no way of telling from what they presented whether or not the increase was dependent on the availability of WP Zero. Perhaps, researching another country without a zero rating service for WP will be helpful.
More importantly for me than readership is the impact of Zero on contributors. Conversations with at least two high profile Wikipedian’s from the global north indicate a line of thought that suggest that editing Wikipedia should no longer be a problem in Africa because of the WP Zero and that, there isn’t much excuse to not edit again from Africa. I found it *quite naïve* because from my own experience that isn’t the only barrier that holds back from editing WP. I’m not sure what the objective of WP Zero is concerning contributors, its target might only be readers for now. But if otherwise I’d be happy to see a report of how its’ impacting edits as well.
