BarCamp Accra <http://bit.ly/bckdua13> 2013 is a free networking forum on
Monday, December 23, 2013 at the new World Bank Office in Accra. The theme
is “Exercising ethics to engineer excellence”. This Barcamp will be the
28th organized by the GhanaThink Foundation <http://www.ghanathink.org/> as
it builds a network of young change makers, doers and entrepreneurs in
Ghana.
Corruption has been a big theme in Ghana this year, and a lot of us have
read and listened to media reports in anger and disappointment. After the
initial reactions fade away, we realize that attitudes of corruption and
dishonesty are deeply entrenched in our society and we wonder what we can
do about it as ordinary Ghanaians.
At Barcamp Accra, we intend to discuss, in interactive sessions, issues of
ethics, corruption and most importantly, how we can achieve excellence
without being unethical. There will also be the popular speed mentoring
sessions with many inspirational people. Some of our confirmed resource
personnel include *Shamima Muslim, Nhyira Addo, Bernard Avle (CITI FM),
Kwame Gyan (Airtel), Kinna Likimani (Ghana Decides), Gloria Buckman (Plan
It Ghana), Joseph Hudson (Tigo), Kimathi Kuenyehia (Top Lawyer), Nana Amoah
(Google), Hannah Acquah (Acumen Fund), Valerie Labi (Clean Team Ghana),
Eugene Akoto-Bamfo (Osramba), Eric Osiakwan (AngelAfrica), Michael Ocansey
(Kuzima.com), *etc. We'll cap off the day with breakout sessions.
Come network, learn and share with some of the brightest and best youth in
Ghana. It's a free event with free breakfast and lunch from 8am to
5pm. Register
today at http://bit.ly/bcaccra13. You can also register by sending "Barcamp
Accra + Your Name + Your Email Address" to 1945 on all networks. This event
is sponsored by GhanaThink Foundation, Google, World Bank, DKT
International, Gold Coast Clothing, Nandimobile, etc. Media partners are
Spy Ghana, Ghana News Agency and CITI FM.

Betreff: [cultural-partners] A million images released
An: "Wikimedia Chapters cultural partners coordination" <
cultural-partners(a)wikimedia.ch>
Hi all,
An interesting challenge for us: the British Library has just released
a million (really - 1,019,993) high-quality scans of public domain
images onto Flickr Commons:
http://britishlibrary.typepad.co.uk/digital-scholarship/2013/12/a-million-f…http://lukemckernan.com/2013/12/13/mechanical-curation/http://www.flickr.com/photos/britishlibrary/ (images)
https://github.com/BL-Labs/imagedirectory (metadata)
The challenge is that they don't know what any of the pictures
actually are. They've been programatically extracted from a corpus of
digitised books, with no metadata beyond the details of the book
itself - which of course tells us very little about what any given
picture is.
As a result, they aren't much use for Commons - at least, not as a
bulk upload. (I looked into this a few months back). They're all PD,
though, so can be individually migrated across without any rights
issues.
The plan is to use Flickr to feed these into a crowdsourcing
application of some form, and hopefully that will give us enough
metadata to be able to start pulling them across into Commons.
However, if you have any smart ideas for how we could bring them into
Commons now, using the metadata we have...
Andrew.

With a little bit of effort, we can put akan on Google translate, avoiding
the need even to concentrate on the akan wikipedia since the contents of
the English wikipedia can be easily translated.
At least five people working on improving the Google translate toolkit
translation memory for akan for the next six months can secure the spot for
akan.
Anyone in here to volunteer? I'm in by default, so 4 left.

Dear all
The committee met this evening and is happy to announce that it chose
its jury.
We received many applications (11 from new candidates) and it was really
tough to choose from all the great people.
We decided to create a jury of 9 members including 4 "oldbies" (=
previous Wikimania jury experience), 4 "newbies" plus 1 WMF staff member.
Accordingly, the following people are welcome to form the future jury
selecting Wikimania 2015 bid.
* Orsolya Gyenes
* Manuel Schneider
* Deror Avi
* Jeromy-Yu Chan
* Netha Hussain
* Victoria Levant
* Richard Sydmonds
* Ralf Roletschek
* Ellie Young
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2015_jury
We would like to thank all candidates. Individual emails will be send to
all candidates.
Thanks
Anthere

To: Wikimedia Education <education(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi folks! We're nearing the completion of a project to create a new
introductory brochure for helping newcomers to get started on
Wikipedia. It's the new version of the old "Welcome to Wikipedia"
brochure.
There are still some refinements being made, and there's still time to
make changes based on feedback, but it's starting to come into its
final form. Check it out and leave suggestions, please!
I'll keep this page updated with the latest PDF as we get new
revisions from the designer we're working with:
