Where can we localize the interface? Transletewiki?

Yes, the regular upload wizard can be translated at http://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special%3ATranslate&task=view&... Some completeness statistics are at my userpage at Translatewiki: http://translatewiki.net/wiki/User:Multichill
The message custom to a specific campaign will be translated at Commons. We're trying to keep the number of custom messages to a minimum.

Would be good to have a link to list of monuments on "describe" screen.
Hello all,
I am not happy at all with uploadwizard. The uploadwizard at Commons is annoying, this one is worse. I am certainly not going to send users to this uploadwizard. I just need one page in what users can fill in everything, including the monument-id. If that is too much asked for, fine, then we need to create our own uploadform.

Hi Romaine,
please keep in mind that the target group for the upload wizard are mainly non-wikipedians and hopefully also people that are new to computers (e.g. 60-year-old hobby photographers), and those will be very confused by the usual forms. The upload wizard divides the upload process (that is a very natural thing to you and me and everybody involved with WLM) into small steps and therefore is easier to complete.
Wikipedians and especially those who will upload hundreds of pictures will rely on Commonist and other tools, they can categorize their uploads by hand.

The current uploadwizard is too corrupt and doesn't work correctly as at least we should expect. The onliest way it works correct is when a user accidentally fills it in perfectly, but that isn't the daily practice. If an uploadwizard is meant to be for dummies, then it should be dummyproof, and the current unstable uploadwizard isn't that at all and is too buggy. That is unacceptable to me for an official contest. I think it would be fantastic if we would get an uploadwizard that **really** makes it easier for people who have little experience with it, but the current uploadwizard makes it more difficult for them.

Hi romaine. From what I can read, you do not like the upload wizard for some reason. Can you please be more (or rather *very*) precise in what is wrong with it, and Point to the relevant bug reports in http://bugzilla.Wikimedia.org that document these issues so that there is just the slightest chance the currently apparently blocking issues can be addresseed by those who should.

Hello,
I have too little time for this and I am already overworked. I expect when I use an uploadwizard that it makes it more easy for me to upload, this uploadwizard makes it harder with less possibilities and no easyness at all what I should expect from a "wizard". Just cutting the uploadform in pieces doesn't make it easier. It has also been made more difficult with too much intollerance.
For now my last reply in this subject, I just wanted to make clear that the current wizard isn't working as it should be for an official contest. I hope an adjusted normal uploadform would be available just as it was with the edition in 2010.

Harder for who?
Harder for Romaine, it says so in the email. It still lacks many features, but I believe we're better off with it for the contest.
The question is: do we have any study made on it's impact? Like, the number of successful uploads versus failed/abandoned ones?

It's too bad that you are not making an effort to point out exactly what is wrong, but are stating it does not meet your expectations or standards twice, that are, mind you, not written down anywhere.
Without clarification, your objections are unsubstantial.

Hi all, I just uploaded a file with the new upload wizard and I tried to see Romaine's problem but couldn't.
As I see it, this is simply a copy of our current upload wizard, with the monument ID field added. Is this correct? If so, I miss the storyboard, which I suppose is our responsibility to create. Or are we not going to include a WLM storyboard for the WLM upload?
My other issue is with the confusing pre-selected field about "I, [name], the uploader...", since the license is part of our basic instructions I really don't think we need to bother about this at all. We want to cut out every non-necessary step, since each extra step means the potential loss of a WLM uploader. This field appears edittable, and it should not even be shown at all. Everything for WLM is CC-by-SA 3.0, and if not, well, sorry about that mistake, but who cares? Theoretically these mistakes will eventually be picked up by somebody in the normal "Wikimedia Commons way".
I like it that you can add extra categories in the upload wizard, but I am asking myself if this is really necessary, since we will autocategorize everything. As others have pointed out, the more experienced users can always click on the file and add categories with hotcat, or even use Commonist. The category structure on Commons is confusing at best, and I really don't want to send our WLM participants down that road at all.
What I really want to know is if the category check is done immediately for the number; because otherwise, what happens to those wrong numbers? I think the user should be offered a chance to say "Yes, this is town X" or at least "Yes, this is country X". It is also nice for the user to have some kind of confirmation that the file is eligible for the contest, since the two useability links produced at the end do not indicate this at all.

Andre, Thanks for that reminder! I had a "duh!" moment when you mentioned that you have no database access during the upload.
Here are the auto-categories created in the file template: cc-by-sa-3.0 nlwrong number
The upload wizard chooses "Rijksmonument" based on the link name ending in WLM-NL vs WLM-FR. So if I use WLM-FR, I get a prompt for "Monument historique" instead of "Rijksmonument", which produces this: ==== cc-by-sa-3.0 frRM - not MH.
Thankfully the upload interface is in English based on my user settings in my profile (having a userid on Commons is a requirement for eligibility in the contest).
How do WLM participants upload files for other countries? Do they need to fish out this two letter suffix to the link on their own or do we put that in the storyboard also? As far as the storyboard goes, maybe we need to include the original storyboard as an option (the original upload form is of course also always available) and *conclude* with a storyboard how they can confirm that their uploaded picture is (or will be?) categorized.

It's too bad that you are not making an effort to point out exactly
what
is wrong, but are stating it does not meet your expectations or
standards
twice, that are, mind you, not written down anywhere.
Without clarification, your objections are unsubstantial.

How do WLM participants upload files for other countries? Do they need to fish out this two letter suffix to the link on their own or do we put that in the storyboard also?
I'm working on a upload landing page at https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monum... this will contain links to the upload wizards for all countries.

Hello,
My major problem with the uploader is that I have to repeat some tedious actions when I upload several files:
* Language of the description: I often do the description in a different language than my browser language, and then I have to search for the right language in the menu - for every single file!
* Category: Often it is the same category for all files.
My suggestion: ask the user before whether he wants to describe always in the same (and in which language). Then ask him what category applies. Only then let him do the descriptions etc.
I also usually have an original file name such as "IMG 20334", and I want to upload as "2011-08-18 kantoor 01" etc. It would be nice to find a way that I don't have to copy and paste this for all files, but that I can give the name in advance and then only add 01, 02, 03 and so on.
In general, I find the upload wizard useful, e.g. because it presuppposes that the user wants to upload with CC-BY-SA (but it also gives the opportunity for alternatives).
Kind regards Ziko
Hi guys,
This list is not for general upload wizard feedback. The upload wizard is what we have and what we decided to use. On top of the upload wizard we have the campaigns. That's what we can change and for that we have https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monum...

Hello !
Thanks Kilian ! I totally agree with you ! :-) We are going to have a public contest. This upload wizard is a better step tnat a ugly and multifield form. I prefer to have a user friendly form with errors than nothing or something horrible, which is impossible to use.

Hi Romaine,
please keep in mind that the target group for the upload wizard are mainly non-wikipedians and hopefully also people that are new to computers (e.g.

Hello all,
I am not happy at all with uploadwizard. The uploadwizard at Commons is annoying, this one is worse. I am certainly not going to send users to this uploadwizard. I just need one page in what users can fill in everything, including the monument-id. If that is too much asked for, fine, then we need to create our own uploadform.

Maarten, how come can we pre-fill the ID? I think that, in the XXI century, to force the user to manually copy the ID and paste it in the form - which is pretty error-prone - it does not make sense in a "somewhat" integrated solution.
It would also be nice to pre-fill the description with the names/descriptions we have in the lists...

Thanks Maarten, can you please send me a dump of the uw_ campaign tables as they are now?
Nuno, Wow, that would be very cool if you managed to prefill the description from the tables and get the monument ID number!
Something else that came up during our meeting on Sunday for the Dutch competition was the subject of the Wikimedia Commons Licensing tutorial storyboard. I am including the link for those of you who saw it once and then opted never to see it again:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Licensing_tutorial_en.svg
basically this is a storyboard "how to upload to commons" and is split into 6 parts: Lead: Useful Tips when contributing to Wikimedia Commons Storyboard 1: You may upload works that you created entirely yourself Storyboard 2: We can't accept works created or inspired by others Storyboard 3: ...with two main exceptions Storyboard 4: In conclusion... End: Still unsure? Ask the Help desk.
We may adjust this screen for each country "campaign", or even leave it out altogether (for example, those participants who choose the Flickr group as an option will never see this page).
Nuno, if you are able to pre-fill some fields, then that would be totally awesome and this point can just be ignored, but Lodewijk mentioned that it may be useful to use this page to remind the user of the list of participating countries with a link to where the upload links are, since you can only upload to one country per "Wikimedia Commons upload campaign".
If a licensing tutorial is used, I suggest making it more compact by removing Storyboard 2/3/4 and changing the lead and end a bit to reflect the competition, such as including the name of the country in the lead or the country WLM workgroup instead of Help desk in the end, or something like that.

Dear Jane (et Al):
We have been discussing some issues as well.
For instance, if the user clicks on the list and jumps to the pre-filled form, but it's logged out (it has to be logged in to upload images), that can be a mess....
...so we need to explain the user how to use the list to pre-fill the form... and I like he idea of the storyboard, I'm just not sure we have manpower enough to do it...
And I'm also not sure we can use a different storyboard for campaigns...
Nuno, I know it's get complicated very quickly! I suppose though that our "storyboard" is already on our WLM website, like here on the Dutch one: http://www.wikilovesmonuments.nl/doemee/
The storyboard on Commons should just be a quick reminder of that one, so the steps should be
1) Go find a monument in your neighborhood and take a picture 2) Keep track of the numbers of the monuments you take pictures of (could be part of step one, if you are using some map like the one showing "these monuments still don't have a picture on commons") 3) Login to Commons 4) Upload the picture on Commons 5) No luck doing it this way? Contact us on the website (option one) or use Flickr (frowned upon, since we *want* people to learn how to use Commons, and this involves hand work by volunteers)
If the user manages to jump all of these hurdles, it would be great for them to receive a "Thank you for participating and uploading a monument!" message.
Note that the original Dutch upload form from 2010 is still on Commons here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Upload&uselang=nl...

Hi,
Just picking up on the storyboard suggestion - I am afraid that would remove the whole idea of simplification. With us Wikipedians there is always the danger we want to cover everything and therefore the thing becomes too complicated. If we do a "storyboard" at all at the begin of the upload process, it should be something very simple like "welkom to Wiki Loves Monuments" , a logo and that's it. All the own work and all is covered well enough.

Lodewijk, Yes, this should be something very simple, but there may be a bit more needed than just the WLM logo. During the upload process, the 5 upload steps will appear: Learn/Upload/Release rights/Describe/Use
It would be nice if we just quickly describe these steps on the landing page. The "Describe" part is where the monument ID comes into play. An informative note somewhere about the fact that the photo is released under CC-by-SA 3.0 should be included.
I was thinking of a welcome message with these steps listed, and maybe accompanied by the local map of the selected "Wikimedia Commons campaign". A basic map may be desirable to confirm that the user has selected the correct "campaign link".
