Submission of local WLM 2024 winning photos to the international jury

[This email contains important information on how you can submit the 10 nominees of your country to the international finale and the deadline. Please forward this to your coordinators if need be.] Dear national coordinators, jury coordinators, Thank you for an amazing job in the past weeks and months in organizing what seems to have been yet again an amazing competition in 56 countries! It's great to see all the beautiful images that have been submitted. As you know, the international Wiki Loves Monuments competition is based on a federalized model: there's a national competition in each country, with a national organizing team, a national jury and national winners. The national jury determines up to (maximum) 10 images that will be submitted to the international finale. Submitting your top 10 for the international round can be done in two ways: - By publicly announcing the 10 winners on Wiki Loves Monuments 2024 winners <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2024_winners> before the deadline below, and via email notifying the WLM-i jury coordinator (rodelarwiki(a)gmail.com) of the publication of the winners on Commons; or - By sending the 10 winning photos directly to the WLM-i jury coordinator of the international WLM team (rodelarwiki(a)gmail.com), for instance in cases where the national winners will be announced in a prize ceremony or a press release that will happen after the deadline mentioned below. If you wish to keep the 10 winning photos secret a little while longer, please send the ten winning photos to the jury coordinator with the date of when they will be published. In this case please also include at least one member of your national jury in the cc of the email for confirmation of the result. *The deadline is 2 December 2024, 23:59 UTC*. But if you like me, please send them at least a few days before that time. Submissions after this deadline are not guaranteed to be included in the finale. When submitting your finalists, please take these instructions into account: * Submit no more than ten images per (national) competition. It is OK to submit less images, for example if you don't find enough images of high quality. * Submit for each image (in the case of sending them by email): URL, File name on Wikimedia Commons and Author username. * Check basic information about the images. It is NOT possible to replace finalists after the deadline! ** that the author has activated their email function on Wikimedia Commons. If we cannot email the user there, they may automatically forfeit any prize. You can help them by posting a message on their talk page, or tracking them down through social media. ** that the monument in the image is identified (preferably also described in English). ** that the image is freely licensed. If you want, there are opportunities to share your national winners also on the international blog. Please get in touch with either of us about this. Thanks a lot for your cooperation. After all nominees have been received, this will result in a pool of images for the international jury to consider. The jury will first rate all images with 1-5 stars, from which a top-40/60 will be considered. Then, the jurors will have the opportunity to remove images from the selection, which they consider unfit. Finally, they are asked to rank their top-25 images, and share their reasoning. We will create a jury report based on this information. We expect to announce the results in January/February. We're looking forward to the judging process! uploading scanned films?

hello there! has anyone tried locally to organise something around outreach to photographers whose pictures were made on photographic films? we have not had such a campaign in Ukraine before, just individual efforts, like when a Wikipedian convinced an old photographer to upload his pictures of lost heritage to Commons, they had to scan his films to do that: https://www.wikilovesmonuments.org/photos-of-destroyed-heritage/ as this year (to make sure people are not roaming around taking pictures for their own safety) for the Ukrainian part of the contest we decided to accept only pictures taken before February 24, 2022, we thought of maybe looking for ways to reach this audience -- photographers whose pictures are on films, so most probably old enough... but maybe there are some tips/things to be aware of when dealing with scanned films, and somebody on the list has travelled down this path already, and can share useful information? HEIC to JPG convertor for Commons?

Hi all, Some participants of WLM Ukraine reported difficulties converting HEIC images (default format on new iPhones) to JPG. They obviously can't upload HEIC to Commons because it's a non-free format, but when they try to convert to JPG directly on their phone, some of them are getting a low-resolution version instead of a full-resolution one. We did try sending them links to Apple help pages but it didn't really work. Have any of you seen this problem? If yes, do you know any free tools or do you have any good intuitive guides for HEIC upload to Commons? We can translate them if needed. Thanks! Mykola (NickK) WLM Ukraine

WLM Suriname questions: 2 jurors and adding images from vacation school competition to WLM?

Hello everyone, We are halfway through Wiki Loves Monuments Suriname and I have two questions that arose that I would like to ask you: * Prior to Wiki Loves Monuments Suriname which is held in october, the team organised a vacation school for students aged 8 to 14, with a seperate photo competition <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2024_in_Sur…>, in september. The team originally did not want to include these pictures <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:WLMSU> in the official WLM competition, but is now getting requests from parents about the possibilities for adding them. Would this be possible (since the pictures are already uploaded to Commons in september, not october)? * Do you need to have three jury members or is two also enough? Thanks for you help again! Information regarding some of the tooling for WLM 2024

Hi all, As you may know, there are several tools overseen by the WLM international team for Wiki Loves -like contests. While I myself stepped down from the team a while back, I wanted to send a (belated) quick reminder of some tools that are available. Note that these are not all the tools available around WLM, only the ones that I (co-)maintain(ed) :) == Statistics tools == https://wikiloves.toolforge.org/monuments/2024 Data is refreshed every 15 minutes. If you want to know more about the tool, please see https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tool:Wikiloves The tool, beyond the “country race”, provides each competition with: * A day-to-day table of image uploads and joiners (uploader who uploaded their first image on that day). https://wikiloves.toolforge.org/monuments/2024/Norway * A sorted table of all uploaders, their upload count (as part of the competition) and file usage, and their registration date https://wikiloves.toolforge.org/monuments/2024/Norway/users These two views may be helpful to gauge the health of your competition If you notice any issue with the tool (bug, data missing, etc.), please file a task on Phabricator: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/task/edit/form/1/?projects=tool… == ErfgoedBot and Monuments database == Some might have noticed it − ErfgoedBot had been broken since March (GridEngine deprecation). We managed to get back and running just in time for September 1st. For more information on the services provided by ErfgoedBot (categorization, maintenance reports, etc.), please see the documentation on Commons: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Monuments_database One of the most relevant tasks is categorization. Unfortunately, the bot’s work is slowed down by going over and over thousands of images it can't figure out how to categorize. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Monuments_database/Categorization → it would be great if humans could have a look at the images left in https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Monuments_database/Categorizatio… == Notification to uploaders without email enabled == Every three minutes, ErfgoedBot retrieves the list of users who uploaded, in the last few minutes, pictures marked as participating to WLM. If an uploader has not enabled e-mail, the bot leaves a message on their talk page explaining that it is necessary to win a prize (unless it has already notified that user). Translations of Wiki Loves Monuments (++)

Hi all, In our multilingual wikiverse we depend for many things on translations. Many people speak other languages, but still many people can't. Today I was wondering how well the name of the photo contest Wiki Loves Monuments was translated in Wikidata <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1353202> into various languages. Here an overview: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Romaine/Wiki_Loves Still in many languages a translation is missing. If you speak a certain language, please add a translation by clicking on the pen icon. Also Wiki Loves Earth and Wiki Loves Africa labels are listed. In the large photo contests many translatable templates are used to make Commons as much as possible available in the local language of the users. You understand English, but many people don't. To make it easier to understand and join, we often use templates that have been translated. Many of these templates are only translated for a few languages, which is restricting who can understand a text or not. The 15th edition of the annual photo contest, aimed at documenting built heritage worldwide, is organized in as many as 53 countries around the world.
