Dear all,
a doubt:
is Instagram compatible with Creative Commons?
Can I upload *my* Instagram pics on Commons (so could it be used for WLM)?
Please consider that I'm not suggesting Instagram pics are good for WLM
(they are filtered and all, probably not very suitable for illustrating
monuments on Wikipedia)
but is a legal matter.

Hi all,
Hope you've been well! We are stoked to announce that we have just released
v3.1.0 of the Commons Android app with WLM integration, and it is available
in alpha (closed) testing.
The reason for closed testing is to allow organizers to test the app before
the start of the competition, and also for us to get bug reports ahead of
time. The closed alpha version includes testing-related conveniences that
aren't available in publicly-accessible versions, most notably allowing WLM
uploads before 1 September (with test templates so as not to clutter the
actual WLM uploads).
We hope to release the public beta by 1 September, just in time for the
start of the competition, if all goes well.
For more information on how to access closed alpha testing, as well as
implementation details, screenshots, FAQ, etc, please view
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Mobile_app/WLM_release .
On that page, we will also be taking requests for countries that want to
have their Wikidata property added, or countries that want to opt out of
in-app WLM uploads. Please post your request by 3 September if possible, so
that we can release an app update with them within the first week of the
competition.
Thank you all for taking this journey with us; we hope to be able to help
bring new participants to the competition, or at the very least to provide
a solid foundation for future WLM mobile implementations to build upon.
Best regards,
Josephine / @misaochan (Commons app project lead)
Hi all,
I just wanted to collect some input on the WLM banners.
As background: the centralnotice banners are the most important way that we
make newcomers aware of our competition, but it is also the main way many
other efforts get attention. This is a scarce resource, that we should use
responsibly.
When we started Wiki Loves Monuments, the sitenotice was primarily
all-or-nothing, and the community was very much at ease with such an
important competition getting this attention. As time progressed, the
option to institute a "diet" was added. Unfortunately, the documentation of
this is pretty poor, but it looks like this basically constitutes of a
maximum number of times that a given device sees the banner within a given
span of time. Typically, this number is set at 5 (you only see a banner 5
times), but there is an option to 'reset' that counter to show the banner
another 5 times, for example the next week. Some options I would see as
feasible (but more experienced sitenotice designers may know more creative
solutions) would include:
- Show this banner X times in total per device
- Show this banner X times per week per device
- Show this banner once per day
- Show this banner once per Y page views
etc
The community has also flagged over the past years that showing the banner
without limitation becomes harder to justify as the number of campaigns
increases.
Experience teaches us that the effect of a banner diminishes over the
number of times it is being shown to people. It may be a small cost to us
to determine a diet. For simplicity's sake, we should probably try to come
up with one-size-fits-all with some possible local exceptions if special
events happen (e.g. a national monument open day).
Now the question is: what is a reasonable and optimal diet to request? This
is a tricky balance to strike: what is still enough to almost achieve
optimal impact, but minimize the 'cost' in our readers' attention? If
people have not clicked on a banner the first five times, will they click
on it the sixth?
I invite all national organizers to share their insights here or on the
public discussion page. If we can come to a consensus of what we think is a
fair diet, then we're also more credible with our request for these
essential resources. I have my own thoughts, and I'm sure others on the
international team have them too. But first, I'd love to hear some more
thoughts. What diet would be fair and practical, if any?

Hi all,
Just a quick question about the WLM 2021 template that we are trying to add
to WLM uploads made via the Commons app. We currently retrieve the country
that a monument is in, then convert it to the two-letter country code and
insert it into the template.
However we are still getting errors; as shown at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Newstead_Gasworks_4.jpg , I have
uploaded a test image with the template {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 |1=
au}} but the page says "English: No or incorrect country code indicated in
the {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2021}} template". I have experimented with
various other country codes listed at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_country_lo…
; interestingly some like "al" or "ad" do not work, but "ie" does.
TLDR: Does the template only accept some countries and not others, perhaps
only countries participating in WLM 2021? Is it possible for us to get a
machine-readable list of these countries?
Thanks!
Best regards,
Josephine
Hi Everyone,
it looks like this email may not have made it through for some reason, so
resending.
I would highly encourage you to think a bit about who in your respective
networks would be a good juror for the international jury. We will again
try for diversity, but for that to be successful, Ndahiro needs a lot of
good suggestions!
It would be great if every national organizer could try to share at least
one candidate with him, and then we can select a balanced set from that.
Thanks so much!
If you are trying to think about what makes a good juror, please see the
instructions below.
Best,
Lodewijk

Hi all,
Like every year, We need to put together a good jury for Wiki Loves
Monuments 2021. It is a complicated and delicate process to come to a
balanced jury, and I would like to outline the criteria here and ask for
your input. I have agreed to take the lead on this process - but would
definitely welcome your input, and help.
- As in the past years, I think it is important to aim once again for a
jury that as a whole is neutral and balanced in many ways. This means
ideally:
- A mix of photography experts, heritage experts, and Wikimedia experts
(aiming at a total size of 7-9)
- Geographically balanced so that no two jury members come from the same
country.
- Balance in many other ways imaginable (while at the same time, one can
never assure a balance in all aspects)
The international jury members do not serve on a national jury for WLM,
At the same time, there are some practical considerations:
- Jury members must be able to write and read English.
- They must have the time to commit to judge 200-500 photos in three
rounds over a period of 3 weeks in November, while jury members can
participate in a local competition, their photos cannot participate in the
international finale.
- Jury members should not participate in any national jury for 2021
(previous years is OK)
- It would be helpful if the juror would be willing to share their real
name for the jury report.
- Jury work is in a volunteer capacity.
Do you know someone who would make a good juror, please contact me
privately with a suggestion? At least let me know who the juror is, how I
could contact him/her and why they would make a good jury member (and
whether you have reason to believe they would accept the nomination if
asked).
I will do my best to put together once again a qualified and diverse jury,
with your help!
Thank you in advance!
Best regards,
*Derrick Ndahiro*

Hi,
Somebody should update the Monumental of maps.wikilovesmonument.org .
https://maps.wikilovesmonuments.org/
Also if there is any support for the app then it would be nice to have it
to be able to run in "iframe" mode where it would not be showing header
texts ("Login links", go back to the main page) so there would be just a
clean map interface The iframe mode could be defined via url-parameter.
