a doubt:
is Instagram compatible with Creative Commons?
Can I upload *my* Instagram pics on Commons (so could it be used for WLM)?
Please consider that I'm not suggesting Instagram pics are good for WLM
(they are filtered and all, probably not very suitable for illustrating
monuments on Wikipedia)
but is a legal matter.

Hi all,
As we have stated in our annual plan [1], “currently, community members
must search many pages and places to stay informed about Foundation
activities and resources.” We have worked in the past two quarters to
create a single point of entry. We call it the Wikimedia Resource Center,
and its alpha version is now live on Meta Wikimedia:

As the movement expands to include more affiliates and more programmatic
activities every year, newer Wikimedians are faced with lack of experience
in the movement and its various channels for requesting support. In order
to expand Wikimedia communities’ efforts, we want to provide easy access to
resources that support their very important work. The [[m:Wikimedia
Resource Center]] is a hub designed in response to this issue: it is
intended to evolve into a single point of entry for Wikimedians all over
the world to the variety of resources and types of staff support they may
need to develop new initiatives or also expand existing ones.
This version of the Resource Center is only the beginning. For phase two of
the project, we will enable volunteer Wikimedians to add resources
developed by other individuals or organizations to the Wikimedia Resource
Center, and in phase three, the Wikimedia Resource Center will include
features to better connect Wikimedians to other Wikimedians that can
support them.
We want to hear what you think about this prototype and our plans for it!
If you have comments about the Wikimedia Resource Center, you can submit
your feedback publicly, on the Talk Page, or privately, via a survey hosted
by a third party, that shouldn’t take you more than 4 minutes to complete.
A feedback button is on the top right corner on every page of the hub.

I've told Jcb about this discussion

reminded them to check for license blanking vandalism and asked if they can
check the deleted edits of the license blanker in case they were able to
get any other files deleted that way.
I'm not an admin on commons, but where I am an admin it would be expected
that you would check the history of a file before deleting it.

and apply no later than March 14. If your request is approved, you will
receive funding in June 2017. Note that if you miss this deadline, the next
round of grant requests will give you grants in December 2017, which may be
too late for your WLM 2017.

than $2000, rapid grants

Hi all,
I'm very excited to get started on Wiki Loves Monuments 2017! There are
some amazing projects in the works.
A few weeks ago, some members of the Wiki Loves Monuments international
team met to go over the results from 2016 and start planning for 2017.
We've posted notes from the meeting at

Here are the highlights:
- The international team's draft mission: While there is a lot of
excitement around Wiki Loves Monuments, there has also been much discussion
about the exact goal. We thought it would be helpful for the international
team to get on the same wavelength about our work, and it was a fruitful
conversation. Wiki Loves Monuments can serve a few different, very
important purposes -- helping people connect to built cultural heritage,
providing a significant number of new high quality contributions for
Wikimedia, and helping a local group jumpstart their Wikimedia activities.
We decided that these three goals should be our mission: to freely document
and raise awareness of built cultural heritage, increase contributions to
the Wikimedia projects and bolster local Wikimedia communities by leading
and facilitating an annual federated, global, low-barrier photo
competition. We hope this mission will help us focus and do some valuable
work this year.
- Recap of Wiki Loves Monuments: We wrote about some of our work that was
necessary to run the campaign in 2016. We did this to make sure all of us
in the international team have a clear picture of what needs to be done to
organize the competition at the international level. The documentation will
hopefully be a helpful resource for future organizers, and help us improve
some of the documentation.
- Evaluations for 2016: In addition to the amazing results and statistics
from 2016, it's helpful to reflect on feedback that organizers and those
who did not organize Wiki Loves Monuments in 2016 provided throughout the
process. Thank you to everyone who provided replies to us last month. We
learned about a few successes (increase in participation, partnerships with
UNESCO, and beyond), as well as some opportunities to improve (such as
making the process easier, and helping with more partnerships in the
future).
- Our projects for 2017: Based on the previous discussions, we'll take on a
few tech projects for the next year. We will be working on three: enriching
and integrating the monuments data in Wikidata (supporting work from
Wikimedia Sweden), enabling more global partnerships and international
competition, providing better statistics, and working on a new tool to show
off monument data (Monumental).
- What do we think Wiki Loves Monuments will look like in five years? We
hope to see the competition continue to grow, for it to be the world's
biggest collection of monuments data (in addition to the world's biggest
photo competition). We will aim to welcome more countries into the
campaign, as well. Of course, these are just a few concepts from the
international team, hopefully to start more conversations with everyone who
has a part in Wiki Loves Monuments around the world.
We have some exciting ideas in store for 2017! If you have any comments or

The Wikimedia movement is beginning a movement-wide strategy discussion, a process which will run throughout 2017. For 15 years, Wikimedians have worked together to build the largest free knowledge resource in human history. During this time, we've grown from a small group of editors to a diverse network of editors, developers, affiliates, readers, donors, and partners. Today, we are more than a group of websites. We are a movement rooted in values and a powerful vision: all knowledge for all people. As a movement, we have an opportunity to decide where we go from here.
This movement strategy discussion will focus on the future of our movement: where we want to go together, and what we want to achieve. We hope to design an inclusive process that makes space for everyone: editors, community leaders, affiliates, developers, readers, donors, technology platforms, institutional partners, and people we have yet to reach. There will be multiple ways to participate including on-wiki, in private spaces, and in-person meetings. You are warmly invited to join and make your voice heard.
The immediate goal is to have a strategic direction by Wikimania 2017 to help frame a discussion on how we work together toward that strategic direction.
Regular updates are being sent to the Wikimedia-l mailing list,[2] and posted on Meta-Wiki.[3] Beginning with this message, monthly reviews of these updates will be sent to this list as well.

Hi all,
As you know, WLM international team requested a grant [1] for an offsite
meeting on Feb. 10-12 in Como, Italy. The meeting took place as planned and
we are now working to prepare a report to share with you. We have taken
notes in all sessions of this 2.5 day offsite, which means there is more
than 1000 lines of documentation now that we are planning to go through,
organize, clean up, and then share. We will need a couple of weeks to make
this happen, but it will happen. Just bear with us for some more days!

The problem with Russian submissions this year was that the files were
mass-nominated for deletion. Whereas it has merit (indeed there is no
freedom of panorama in Russia for monuments), and it looks we can not do
anything on our end, there are two problems with these nominations: (i)
users who had their WLM submissions deleted never ever submit anything else
for WLM; (ii) we can not transfer all files to the projects (in our case,
the Russian Wikivoyage) because the fair use regulations require that files
are use on the project, and it takes a long time to add files to the list
and to choose which one of the multiple photos of the same monument should
be on the list (and others should not be transferred). We had the same
problems in 2015, but then we were able to negotiate that nominations are
frozen and then closed after Nov. 1. In 2016, several trigger-happy admins,
including Jcb, took a stance "copyvio is copyvio and must be deleted as
soon as possible does not matter what", and all mas-nonimations were
deleted promptly in a week. Jcb then gave me a "permission" to restore the
files one by one for transfer, as if I need his permission for that, but
refused to do anything else. Well, specifically about Jcb I hope he will be
soon desysopped (it will be his second desysop for cause) since he scews up
every administrative action he can screw up, but there are other admins
with the same position, and this is why many people believe that Commons is
broken. No bot notifications would help us with this issue.

We have just published the 2016's statistics at

of you may have already seen an earlier post by Erik about them.)
A big thank you to Erik Zachte for doing all the work that helped us
compute the numbers for each of our usual metrics reported. A lot of care
is needed for collecting raw numbers, computing values, and verifying them
and it was great to have Erik on the team to make this happen.
