Dear all,
a doubt:
is Instagram compatible with Creative Commons?
Can I upload *my* Instagram pics on Commons (so could it be used for WLM)?
Please consider that I'm not suggesting Instagram pics are good for WLM
(they are filtered and all, probably not very suitable for illustrating
monuments on Wikipedia)
but is a legal matter.
Aubrey
Dear all,
We shall need a good international team to have another successful version
of Wiki Loves Monuments after 2014. The team should comprise of experience
volunteers who have conducted WLM or any such event in their country.
There are numerous tasks and first task will be to hunt and find our
countries who shall be willing to organise Wiki Loves Monuments again. To
brief, the International Team is more of coordinating with all
participating countries and without proper coordination, there will be no
international competition for WLM 2015.
Been in the international team is also more of applying for grant,
documenting, following up and keeping track of status of all participating
countries. Time to be spent may vary according to the skill of team
members; more the skills and people, lesser the burden; however you can
assume 10 hours a week during the contest (just horrifying).
Would you be interested to be part of international team for WLM 2015,
please send me a brief introduction of yourself and also a note on how you
would benefit the international team. Please send the same by 6th of Jan.
Regards from Mumbai,
Karthik Nadar.
Hello all,
The beginning of a new year is close, and we should start in January with a
team to organise Wiki Loves Monuments 2015. So the question is:
Who is interested in joining the international team?
Requirements:
* You have organized Wiki Loves Monuments in one or more earlier years in
your country (or a similar contest)
* You have the time to commit yourself from January to December 2015 to
organize Wiki Loves Monuments in a team. We have monthly meetings with in
the weeks before the actual contest a weekly meeting.
What the international team does:
* The team helps local teams with answers, advice, and communicates about
what is expected and what deadlines there are.
* Creates lists of monuments
* Maintains a monument database
* Requests and has a budget
* Searches for sponsors
* Chooses prizes
* Sends survey
* Creates a calendar?
* Does the reporting
and a lot more...
For 2015 we should aim for reaching out to all the countries/areas where a
team has participated in earlier years, to reach out to chapters and user
groups who haven't organized it before, and to reach out to Wikipedia
communities which have no chapter and no experience in organisation but do
want to do this. There are still a lot of countries without lists of
monuments on Wikipedia,
So if you commit your enthousiasm and your time to the team, be welcome!
Let us know!
Kind regards,
Romaine

Hi all,
This is a quite early stage idea, so please don't shout me down for not
having specifics yet :)
Looking back at the past few years of Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves
Earth and now also Wiki Loves Africa (all built upon the same philosophy
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments/Philosophy>),
it stroke me that there is so much being learned in different countries,
but that we are not always effectively sharing that among ourselves. Even
if we share, it doesn't seem that the best practices make it actually to
the implementation - I think there's room for improvement here, and that
this could increase the outcomes (in many different ways) and reduce the
costs (especially in volunteer organizing time).
In the first year that we organized the competition on a global scale, we
had a very effective meeting (May 2011
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/May_Me…>)
with a bunch of people from countries that indicated they wanted to
organize WLM later that year. Although much was to be improved, it helped
to build an effective network of people helping each other to organize
effective competitions - sharing skills, tools and inspiration. The
discussions there were in my opinion a major component in the success of
the competitions in 2011 and 2012 (in 2012 we also had a shorter meeting in
Amsterdam).
At the same time we have seen the many challenges to get together an
effective international team. While I want to applaud the wonderful work
done by volunteers nationally and internationally, I had the impression
that both at Wiki Loves Earth and later at Wiki Loves Monuments, a better
international coordination could have helped the competition.
I would like you to ponder a bit with me, and think whether it would be
useful to organize again a training meeting for a variety of organizers
around the world, where skills and experiences can be transferred, best
practices can be shared, the network of organizers internationally can be
strengthened and the international coordination can be given a push in the
beginning.
First of all, please think whether this would be a good idea, and if so
what should be the goals, realistic outcomes and what kind of organizers
should be joining definitely. After that, we can draft up the budget, the
pro's and con's and consider whether this would be a wise investment of our
time and money. Don't worry just yet if it is realistic to request the
money etc - that is a separate discussion.
My initial attitude is positive yet somewhat critical (I know it's going to
be expensive, but I think if there is enough support, it could be worth it)
and I very much look forward to your thoughts. Your input would be highly
valued on this page
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2015/Traini…>
on
Wikimedia Commons.
Looking forward to your very valuable thoughts,
Lodewijk
PS: I am very happy to help organize such a training to help future
competitions, but please don't think I will join the international team
again :) Just want to be realistic.
Hi all,
As you all noticed, the international results have been announced! I didn't
hear back from jury members yet whether they will prepare a jury report,
but that would be nice too...
However, something everyone could basically do, it writing an awesome blog
post about the winning pictures! Who dares? We have wikilovesmonuments.org
still without the results :)
Thanks!
Lodewijk

Winners Announced in World’s Largest Photo Contest: Wiki Loves Monuments
*International jury selects top 10 photos from more than 321,000 worldwide.
Over the four past years, more than 1.1 million images have been submitted
to the contest.*
The international jury for Wiki Loves Monuments 2014
<http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org/> announced today the 10 winning
photographs from the world’s largest photo contest, which ran from
September 1 - 30 this year. More than 9,000 photographers uploaded over
321,000 freely-licensed photographs of historic buildings, monuments and
cultural heritage sites in 41 countries to Wikimedia Commons
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page> for use on Wikipedia and
other free knowledge projects.
This year, the grand-prize winning photograph is an image of the Holy
Mountains Monastery <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_Mountains_Lavra>, a
complex of architectural monuments of national significance in Sviatohirsk,
Ukraine, taken by Konstantin Brizhnichenko
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Brizhnichenko>. The first written
mention of the monastery was in 1526. In 1624, the monastery was officially
recognized as the Sviatohirsk Uspensky Monastery. Before World War I, the
monastery was inhabited by approximately 600 monks. During the 1930s, it
was destroyed by the Soviets, along with other numerous religious sites
throughout the Soviet Union. Today, the monastery community consists of
more than 100 people, a number that increases each year.

The winner will receive flight and accommodations in Mexico to attend
Wikimania, the international conference of the Wikimedia movement, to be
held in July 2015 in Mexico City.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Wiki Loves Monuments is
the world’s largest public photo competition. In it, people are asked to
take pictures of monuments from participating countries and to upload them
to Wikimedia Commons, enabling the photos to be used to illustrate
Wikipedia in articles about these monuments and other subjects.
“With over one million free images of heritage sites across the world, Wiki
Loves Monuments is one of the world’s most important history projects
today,” says Deror Lin, the international coordinator of the competition.
“Year after year, volunteers document hundreds of thousands of heritage
sites across the world and upload the images to the internet under a free
license for the benefit of the current andnext generations. These people
display the splendor of creativity and culture in their countries.”
The competition is organized in 41 participating countries, each focusing
on their national monuments and with their own national prizes. This year,
every participating country submitted 10 nominations to the international
jury who chose the winning pictures for the competition. A number of
countries participated in the competition for the first time, including:
Albania, Kosovo, Iraq, Ireland, Lebanon, Macedonia, Pakistan and the
Palestinian Authority.
The contest was first organized in 2010 in the Netherlands and resulted in
more than 12,500 pictures of Dutch monuments. Over the past four years more
than 1.1 million images have been submitted to the contest.

Sorry for crossposting:Help one of the best volunteer photographers in Wikimedia Commons restore his stolen equipment.
Diego Delso is known as Poco a poco in Wikimedia Commons. In case you don't know, Wikimedia Commons is a media file repository where anyone can share freely-licensed content with everyone. Wikipedia uses Wikimedia Commons as it's image repository, so, in fact, most of the times you view an image in Wikipedia, you are actually viewing a Wikimedia Commons image. While Diego is just one of the thousands of Wikimedia Commons volunteers, he is a very special one: he's one of the main Commons contributors ever, having some amazing records, such as being the user with the highest amount of Featured Pictures ever (153 images) and also the one with the highest amount of quality images ever, with 5,777 Quality Images. That's an awesome amount of very high quality material, that Diego has given to every living person for free.Never heard about Wikimedia Commons? It's the repository that hosts allmultimedia files that you can see (and download) in Wikipedia and all other Wikimedia projects. Diego's files are used in those projects and are also available for everybody else with a free license.Furthermore, Diego has contributed in Wikimedia Commons in other ways. One of them is by supporting (by being an organizer or a jury) two of the most importantphotographic contests in the Wikimedia movement (and in the world!): Wiki Loves Monuments and Wiki Loves Earth.Sadly, while Diego was in Buenos Aires after participating in a Wikimedia Iberoamerican Encounter with other Wikimedia volunteers, he got his equipment stolen. In this unfortunate event, he didn't only lost his camera, zoom lenses and laptop, but also every single picture he took during his 2 weeks trip in South America, which he was going to upload to Wikimedia Commons so they could be used by everyone, everywhere. As Wikimedia volunteers and Diego's friends, we could not stand aside of this, so we decided to help him to restore his equipment. You can help, too, by contributing to this campaign! Our goal is simple: to collect enough money to help Diego to buy exactly the same equipment he lost. All the gear he lost in Argentina is described below, with a reference to the price from Amazon for the same equipment.TipoModeloPreçoCamera bodyCanon EOS 5D Mark II$ 2,694.00Objective fisheye f/4.0Canon EF 8-15mm L USM$ 1,349.00Objective wide-angle f/4.0Canon EF 17-40mm L USM$ 839.00Objective wide-angle to telephoto f/4.0Canon EF 24-105mm L IS UVM$ 1,149.00LaptopAcer Aspire 1810T$ 600.00Total$ 6,631.00
Converted to Euro (since Diego is based in Europe) that goes to 5,300 Euro + 200 euro of Indiegogo fee, which is our target to collect.
