Hi all;
Will we see in 2014 a new edition of WLM? I don't see any coordination messages or pages in Commons.
Regards
I have the same question. I think that are still enough countries interested in a new edition. Wikimedia Spain will be one of them. Is there anyone interested?
regards

Hi,
from discussions it seems there is no clear agreement whether or not there should be an international WLM in 2014. I can at least say that I will not be involved in Wiki Loves Monuments any more (lack of time, and also because of the difficulties encountered at the funding stage and elsewhere which decreased my enthusiasm a lot) - I can't speak for the other organizers. We're still busy wrapping up the 2013 competition.
Earlier this year there were conversations to organize a Wiki Loves Earth international edition in 2014 instead of Wiki Loves Monuments, and I know at least WMNL is very interested in that, and Wikimedia Ukraine used to be.
I think it is time for people who want to join an international team for the coming year to speak up. Now is the time to get started indeed on that level, and to get as much knowledge transfer as possible from the old to the new team - be it Wiki Loves Earth or Wiki Loves Monuments.

The problem with WLE (I like it) could be the time. The contest should be done in April (Am I wrong?) , so we have less than three months to organize it. Wikimedia Spain is also on the list of interested countries for WLE 2014.
I understand that you (Lodewijk) could be tired and you wanted to give it up. I want to thank you very much, for your work during these years coordinating WLM. Good work!
However, I think that there could be some countries interested this year and we could organize WLM 2014.

Hi,
I don't think it would be necessary to organize it in may per se. However, I do think we should only organize one major international competition at a time in September. So there has to be a choice. You could even stretch it to two months, and let countries pick (august/september) a month.
While countries are needed to organize it successfully (very much!) you will also need a dedicated international team of 5-7 people to coordinate everything, assuming it will be more than 10 countries. It is quite a bit of work :) Especially, on the technical side a good (and better) coordination is required to make sure things are ready in time. Without an international team, I don't see an international competition happening. Of course you could try to organize a national competition anyway (nothing prohibits that really), but you'll have to do some of the stuff the international community picked up in the past years yourself.

Hi all,

*strong* quote of Lodewijk here. Let me express my thought here: if we want to have the international WLM in 2014 all we need to do (and it is not a simple task!) is to find 7 people willing to be the next international team. I can help in 2014 too, but I will not have much more time than what I had this year (which is not very much, ask Lodewijk and the other WLM-i members about that). (and yes, I know I am lagging behind with a lot of things).
2014/1/12 Maarten Dammers maarten@mdammers.nl:
In my opinion we should not organize Wiki Loves Monuments in 2014 and not even local competitions under that name. Wiki Loves Monuments was very successful over the last couple of years and of course people are eager to continue with that, but I'm very afraid of the sequel syndrome: Each next edition gets worse than the previous one. I'd rather not do it this year and maybe do it again in 2015 or 2016. Than everyone who is a bit fed up with the project might be up to a new edition.
My personal opinion on this point is the same as Samat:
2014/1/12 Samat samat78@gmail.com:
In global sense it can be true -- specially if the experienced international team gives up support it and we couldn't find a new one with members into every role -- but shouldn't be true in local level. Many countries joined to this project only last year or plan to join this year, and in these countries the competition is in a growing and increasing stage. In my opinion we shouldn't forbid for these countries organizing an international competition together or organizing a competition under the name of WLM.
I can totally understand that volunteers from France, The Nederlands or Poland (please note that these are just random names) which already had 3 editions of WLM (4 for NL) may be willing to do something else, possibly not even related with photography. But those volunteers are also the most experienced with organizing WLM both on the local and the international level. It would be great if somebody of them would be willing to join the international team since (or thanks to the fact that) there will be no WLM in 2014 in their country.
2014/1/12 Maarten Dammers maarten@mdammers.nl:
I'm not even sure if we should do a photo competition this year, we don't want to become a one trick movement.
[...]
One thing I would like is that the language Wikipedia's have "heritage" as the writing theme for September 2014.
(OT) but writing is much more difficult [time-demanding? tedious? whatever? ...] than taking photos. You can not have a nice stroll around and since you are already there you just write something (/OT)
Something else. All these projects seem to rely on ErfgoedBot. That's hosted on the Toolserver and unless someone else takes it over, I'm going to let it die with the Toolserver. Might be a bit inconvenient if you're in the middle of a photo competition.
Adding a couple of info for everybody here: there was a plan to transfer it to WMFLabs, AFAIK one problem was this bug[*]
C
I think Switzerland too.
Switzerland is working a lot on the alpine space and on the Alps and a Wiki Loves Earth matches exactly the strategies of WM CH for 2014.

From Wikimedia Ukraine I can confirm that we are still interested in organising the international edition of Wiki Loves Earth, and we already have an international mailing list for it: wikilovesearth@lists.wikimedia.org . Discussions on timing are being held at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2014 , most options are around April-May (basically the best period to picture nature, especially in the North Hemisphere). Please participate in the discussion if you are interested - the faster we decide on the time, the better.

Hi All
It’s sad to know that. Lodewijk and the international team did a really great work last year, and their tiredness and challenges that we possibly can not imagine without join their work.
For China, we do hope another big event in 2014 with international level competition, it’s just beginning of us, but we do it even maybe without it.
Wiki Loves Earth is a great project undoubted, but the time for preparation is just too short for start a new project. And I think, Wiki Loves Monument is kind of formed a own “brand" for influence and identification, it won’t be a good idea to give up a easy apple, especially for small community like China.
If we really interested in these photo competitions, whatever the monuments or the earth, we should do it together, instead of separating out limit force to several different projects.
I’m not free enough to take over it, but I’ll help if needed.

Hi, It's nice to know there's still interested countries around! This was our first year in the Arab world region, so we still has way to go. The organization of the contest in few middle eastern countries in 2013 helped introduce WLM for the first time to Arabic Wikipedia community, so now we have a lot more of interested countries and people; there's at least 4 new countries that have already expressed interest in joining the 2014 edition. If there's international contest, then we are definitely in. For WLE, I find it really interesting, but if there's going to be WLM 2014 then maybe it will be hard to run both at the same time, as we barely have enough resources and energies to run one contest effectively. Hi All It’s sad to know that. Addis On Jan 11, 2014, at 5:21 PM, Emilio J. Rodríguez-Posada emijrp@gmail.com wrote:LOL, so we have:

Hi,
From Wikimedia Ukraine I can confirm that we are still interested in organising the international edition of Wiki Loves Earth, and we already have an international mailing list for it: wikilovesearth@lists.wikimedia.org . This mailing list is, however, currently lacking activity - thus we invite everyone interested (or potentially interested) to join it: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikilovesearth !
Discussions on timing are being held at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2014 , most options are around April-May (basically the best period to picture nature, especially in the North Hemisphere). Please par ticipate in the discussion if you are interested - the faster we decide on the time, the better.
We are currently building a team for the international edition, and we are going to request funding for WLE 2014 international edition in the name of Wikimedia Ukraine. If anyone is interested to participate in organising WLE, please join the mailing list wikilovesearth@lists.wikimedia.org as well!

Hi, from discussions it seems there is no clear agreement whether or not there should be an international WLM in 2014.

Hi All,
This is Taweetham on behalf of volunteers in Thailand.
We are keen to know what competition will be available in 2014. It was our first time for WLM 2013 and we were fortunate enough to win an international prize. Having established new partnerships and worked with the local list, it would be sad to see WLM disappearing in 2014.
However, we would try to do what ever we can. * We have no chapter and no budget - apart from a small grant from the international team. * We hope that the competition would be attractive to new Wikimedians and would be self-sustaining rather than drawing up energies from our current volunteers.
Having said all these, we should base our decision on http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2013/Particip... I plan to do another local survey as well for my Thai participants.

Personally I don't think that these events are in competition.
Italy, for instance, had a list of "natural" heritage and a list of "cultural" heritage in WLM 2013 and 2012.
So there is no sense, in my opinion to split between Earth and Cultural heritage because the base is the list of objects and people can populate this list how they want.
I see anyway two main problems:
a) Banners on Wikipedia: the big success of participation of WLM is connected with the banner, as soon the event will be locale or limited, there will be a wargame about this banner. Switzerland, for instance, needs to have this banner in de.wikipedia, in fr.wikipedia and in it.wikipedia and I suppose not only limited to the Switzerland (the contest is not limited to the Swiss citizens) b) tools: splitting the events means also splitting the tools and it may be cost consuming
I appreciate a lot the enthusiasm but the central coordination should also look in this point: cost saving and rational workload.
In my opinion, as member of the GAC, having a lot of photographic events where the sum of participants will be the same of WLM but the costs of the organization will be increased geometrically, would be a really bad solution.
regards

Thanks Lodewijk for the great job done so far, you and other nice guys in the international team. I myself have enjoyed the participation in 3 editions of WLM and I can understand that now it is time to take a rest or to search for new challanges. I also undersantd that some countries still have desire and work done to complete the monuments.
I think the key point is to have an intenational team that encourages and helps others. I enjoyed and learned a lot with this scheme of collaboration. Whatever contests are made in 2014 I would reapeat that with a good international team.

We have plans to keep WLM 2014 in Romania even if there won't be an international contest. I can't tell by now if it will happen for sure (a decision is to be made by February-March), but so far we operated under the assumption of doing it alone. If there will be an international contest, we will gladly join it.

Wikimedia Estonia has budgeted for both WLM 2014 and WLE 2014 and is planning to hold both contests: WLE in April-May and WLM in September. WLE is new and exciting and we have already started preparing it. In our WLM contest we have seen less and less photos submitted each year, but we are not giving up yet and will now try to focus on these monuments which don't have any photos in Commons yet and improving the quality of submissions.
I too am very thankful to the international team of WLM who has supported the contest in previous years and I am really hoping that the international round is somehow still going to take place this year.

Hi all,
that is indeed a good point - it is great that everyone is so enthusiastic and want to run either or even both contests, but without an international team, there will not be an international competition, or even a good infrastructure :)
So far, I heard that Cristian willing to join an international team only - and Romaine and Ilya to support parts of the infrastructure (resp. erfgoedbot and templates). Anyone else?

Wikimedia Estonia has budgeted for both WLM 2014 and WLE 2014 and is planning to hold both contests: WLE in April-May and WLM in September. WLE is new and exciting and we have already started preparing it. In our WLM contest we have seen less and less photos submitted each year, but we are not giving up yet and will now try to focus on these monuments which don't have any photos in Commons yet and improving the quality of submissions.
I too am very thankful to the international team of WLM who has supported the contest in previous years and I am really hoping that the international round is somehow still going to take place this year.

Hi guys,
Here in Armenia we have at 2 people who are willing to join the international team (including myself). We really are interested to have a WLM contest this year as well.
I think it's still not too late to form an international team. I suggest that whoever is interested to join the new international team or support it registers here on this page. Once we know who's in the team we'll make a schedule and timeline.

As pointed out by others we seem to have three pages: * https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2014 * https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2014 * https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Public_Art_2014
I'm not even sure if we should do a photo competition this year, we don't want to become a one trick movement. If we would do one I would opt in for the Earth one, I love public art, but the whole (lack of) freedom of panorama is a pain in the ass. Wiki Loves Earth does seem to be quite late in the whole organization if you compare it one of the previous WLM time lines (like https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Timelin...).
One thing I would like is that the language Wikipedia's have "heritage" as the writing theme for September 2014.
Something else. All these projects seem to rely on ErfgoedBot. That's hosted on the Toolserver and unless someone else takes it over, I'm going to let it die with the Toolserver. Might be a bit inconvenient if you're in the middle of a photo competition.

It would be great! Thank you Ilya.
I think that we should do WLM 2014 because there were many new countries last year, and it was a pitty that their effort last year has not impact this one. There are still many countries that have not participated yet and some others that are still interested. I understand that some countries lost interest because near all monuments have a picture, but other not yet.
WLE is a very good project and also WLPA, and I don't see any problem in having three contest in different months of the year. Some countries could organize more than one contest.
At this moment some countries have showed their interest in one or more contest. E.g. for WLM 2014 there are already three countries on the Commons page, and others have said here that they would be interested.

Would it be a viable option if there is one international competition (smth "Wiki loves heritage") with countries choosing one of the three options: Monuments, Earth, and Public Art?

Why exactly one? From 0 to 3.

I'm not even sure if we should do a photo competition this year, we don't want to become a one trick movement.
Our movement not a one trick movement at all, but part of the community interested more in the photos (and other multimedia files). And this part like organizing competitions around these media files. It doesn't mean that we can not or shouldn't organize other type of activities or projects.
If we would do one I would opt in for the Earth one, I love public art, but the whole (lack of) freedom of panorama is a pain in the ass. Wiki Loves Earth does seem to be quite late in the whole organization if you compare it one of the previous WLM time lines (like https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_ Monuments_2012/Timeline).

My feeling, that if you wouldn't / couldn't support the following contests with your knowledge, it will be a big loss and I am not sure we will be able to substitute you :( Will the codes of all your tools are available under free license for others who could maintain this tools for other competitions? Are there other experienced users in the community (ideally on this mailing list) who could run these tools?
Something else: I read several emails in the past weeks about tools which will be unavailable after close of the Toolserver (and the tools should migrate to the new Labs, but they couldn't or don't want). I am really disappointed about this. (Earlier we lost a lot of nice tools because accounts expired after 1(?) year.)
