By the way, the map view in the Android app will provide country maps with monuments pinned on them. And the maps tiles are from OpenStreetMaps.

Does it use Monuments API? Anyway, I'd like Belarus to get into this list. This is the entry point for the lists: http://goo.gl/bh3iD
We could benefit from this tool. What format do you need the coordinates in?

I believe that was the intention of format=dynamickml and format=kml in the API...
It should be fairly simple to complete it and, if the administrative levels in the database are being loaded, we could easily replace all the peripheral mapping tools (Portugal, Sweden, Spanish, etc) for using the DB directly.
I'm saying this because we (PT) needed to isolate "Madeira" and "Azores" from "Continental Portugal" to have 3 maps, but "municipality" is too finer grain for that.

Done, but you have some areas with very few coordinates http://toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/belarus/index.php?place=%D0%9C%D0%B5%D0%BD...
I'm reading your requests, but some countries have no info about administrative subdivisions where are located monuments (Poland and Ukraine). So, I can't generate and huge .kml, because it is not procesed in Google Maps.
I have these maps working:
* http://ortelius.toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/andorra/ * http://ortelius.toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/argentina/ * http://ortelius.toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/austria/ * http://ortelius.toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/canada/ * http://ortelius.toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/switzerland/ * http://ortelius.toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/chile/ * http://ortelius.toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/czechrepublic/ * http://ortelius.toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/estonia/ * http://ortelius.toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/france/ * http://ortelius.toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/israel/ * http://ortelius.toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/italy/ * http://ortelius.toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/luxembourg/ * http://ortelius.toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/panama/ * http://ortelius.toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/unitedstates/ * http://ortelius.toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/southafrica/

Try http://tools.freeside.sk/geolocator/geolocator.html or http://www.giswiki.org/hjl_geocoding.htm
You just need to find an object on the map - click it and the page will create for you a filled geolocation template ready to use on Commons.
Nice! I think that's just what I need. Thanks!

http://www.giswiki.org/hjl_geocoding.htm is probably the best option. The template should already have a variable for lat/lon, and automatically create the coordinates templates from that (this should work properly if you work from the Wikipedia main namespaces). Just remember that if it says W you need to make it negative, and the same for South.
Best, Lodewijk

Is this really, really necessary? As the contest is running, I would like to keep changes at a minimum, and I see that everything is just working fine (except the Android app; already filled a bug about it).
If you're afraid of things failing, you could of course just copy it first and see if everything works. There's no need to delete it. But one of the identified success factors has always been that pictures end up on Wikipedia - that is what motivates a lot of people.

I may try that, indeed. The problem is that, anyway, one would need to do changes in the bots/database/etc. to make them point to the new lists, so I think that problems may still arise and be noticed by the participants.
What I was thinking to do is to keep the contest lists where they are and create copies for Wikipedia (similar to your suggestion, but the official contest lists would still be the external ones).
But one of the identified success factors has always been that pictures end up on Wikipedia - that is what motivates a lot of people.
I don't think that both things (having the lists in an external wiki and adding pics to Wikipedia) are mutually exclusive. Why wouldn't be possible to add the pics to the articles and existing Wikipedia lists while keeping the contest lists where they are?
I don't see the problem, Racso. At the moment, the Argentinian, Chilean, Mexican, Panamanian and Spanish contest are working fine on Wikipedia. The templates are updated and working with a direct link to the UploadWizard; it just needs a copy-paste.

That's not 100% right. Some bots are looking in the ext-wiki (in fact, right now the colombian monuments appear fine in the contest database), and the users look where the contest rules say they must look.
I can't even edit the lists on your wiki!
Because they are semi-protected to avoid vandalism.
OK, I will move the lists to Wikipedia ASAP.
Racso
Done. Every list is now in Wikipedia. They are listed under the following category: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Categor%C3%ADa:Anexo:Monumentos_nacionales_de_C.... I guess the bots must be updated now? After everything is fine, I will direct the participants to those lists directly from the website.

Love the maps.
There is a problem though: they don't seem to be in unicode and Hebrew doesn't work. Also is it possible to change the interface language for Google Maps? Google already has all the languages so it's not a translation issue.

Dear all,
Luca Delucchi (an Italian member of OSM Foundation, in copy since he is not on this list) produced today this map for Italy: http://geodati.fmach.it/wikilovemonuments/index.html
I think that with his help adapting the code for other countries should be feasible. =)
Stay tuned for even cooler WLM-OSM tools in the next days (I hope, really few days ;-) )

As mentioned before, from the database that is developped, the api can generate both kml files and dynamickml files, so instead of creating static files with coordinates, this can be pulled from the database.
You can play a bit with the api via the toolbox:
https://toolserver.org/~erfgoed/toolbox/search.php
Feel free to ask for access to the erfgoed MMP on toolserver, so the tools live at a central place. (The name still comes from the first year where WLM was NL only).

I would appreciate it if you could help out with the shared tools
instead
of offering competing tools.
I would appreciate you show me other WLM mapping tools and I will stop developing this one.

Andre

The Panamanian map links to the wlm-es upload campaign and seems to show ES fields like BIC (our corresponding term is PCN), please fix.

Do you update the coordinates by reparsing the lists? Participants update the data in lists (mostly add coordinates where there are no any).

Hi Emijrp,
On irc, you made a comment about the api being slow, can it be an idea that for example nightly, you create the needed kml files for your mappings from the database with a cron, and use that? That way, you get the fixes from users as well, and people will see that more and more pictures are coming. You should check with the others about timings, to make sure that you create everything after the updates from the various sources are done.

Andre

When creating the Flickr bot I had the same problem. I'd recommend you to use the specific per-country tables. The problem is, the fields change from table to table, but it's orders of magnitude faster (in my case, from 8 seconds per query to 0,1 seconds or something like this).

Yes, there were some issues about codification. Now, I see the Ukranian names correctly http://toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/ukraine/
