Anthere,
Remember that, so far as we have been able to tell, there _is_ a disproportionate majority of male Wikimedia project users...
I tend to make a guess based on the username, and sometimes the result is bizzarre. If you consider it, most people have in their mind a register of names which belong to people, and which are usually for boys and which are for girls.
Names such as "Anthere", "Aphaia", "Eloquence", "Maverick", "Dori", "The Epopt", "HaafLimbo", "Guaka", "Cicero", and the like, I judge based on existing data which can have odd results since none or only a couple of these names are already in my personal register.
"Anthere" I judged as a man (however if in the future I meet somebody with the screenname "Zinthere" I will probably judge them as a woman), "Aphaia" as a woman, "Eloquence" as a woman, "Maverick" as a man, "Dori" as a woman ("Dori" is the name of a female fish in a movie I saw so this one was not without precedent), "The Epopt" as a man, "HaafLimbo" as a man, "Guaka" as a man, and "Cicero" as a man.
Thanks, Mark. And sorry for causing headache, Anthere... Btw, Cicero is a woman, though she herself agrees her nick name suggests the opposite.

On English Wikipedia (dunno about the others) there is a facebook page where you can put your photograph if you want people to know stuff like gender (or you can just say "I am male" or "I am female" on your user page). In general it doesn't make much difference, though, and is not relevant to use of Wikipedia. I've managed perfectly well for about a decade usually roleplaying female online, and nobody ever knows if I don't want them to know. Even those who do know tend to forget, such is the power of illusion.

An illusion much harder to maintain in a language like French for exemple, where many times I will have to use a female form of a past participle or an adjective and give myself away ;-). It is quite an interesting thing to note , that English is language with which it is much easier to hide your gender than with many other languages.

Ce n'est pas difficile devenir française, j'en suis certaine. ;)

One may write the whole life in Ossetic never giving oneself away. :) Even the "he/she" pronoun is the same "uy" in the Ossetic, coming from a demonstrative pronoun ("that"). Reading Ossetian newspapers I often had problems understanding a person's sex until the author puts it explicitly.
I belive not many other Hindo-European languages are similar to the Ossetian in this respect, but most of the Turk languages are such; with much less (if any) grammar markers of sex.

And of course, if you want to be sure your sex is not misinterpreted, you can use your real name as user name. I don't think I would consider a Delphine male at any time, no matter how drunk I may be...

You would not...but what gender would a notafish be? ;-) The name is pronounced like dolphin in at least Spanish and German, which leads to yet other gender confusions... You're right, Delphine is not-a-man, just as the dolphin is not-a-fish ;-)
