Database server is down; it really, _really_ didn't like being asked how many rows are in the old revisions table for the English Wikipedia.
We're working on getting it back online.

Brion-
Database server is down; it really, _really_ didn't like being asked how many rows are in the old revisions table for the English Wikipedia.
Who did that? And if it was a sysop query, why the hell are we still/again allowing those? That's like putting a big red "DoS me" sign on our server.
Regards,
Erik

I ran it while testing, to confirm that it was, indeed, monstruously slow on the larger tables.
Well, it is.
However it shouldn't _crash_ the server; that shows (along with the two spontaneous MySQL crashes we've had earlier) that there's still a lot of work to be done on this new machine before we can declare it to be stable and happy.

www.postgresql.org? :-)
Honestly, I'd love it if we made the wiki a little more database-independent. But none of the postgres advocates have yet submitted actual working code for it.

It's on my list to work in this area (try to port the WP to PostgreSQL); since I'm not a database hacker, this might take some time. I wouldn't waste my time on a database system like mysql which lacks SQL key features and does not conform to the standard.
mysql is a tool for small web applications.

It came out of an IRC conversation. Roughly reconstructed:
Pakaran: Why are SQL queries disabled Tim: Erik turned it off because someone ran "select count(*) from old"
*time passes*
Brion: Hey, that query really is slow
Reports of Wikipedia being down, not responding by SSH etc. then followed.

Like I said -- slow is okay. Slow is expected. Crashing the server during what is otherwise the slowest traffic period? That's either a serious bug or a hardware problem, and we want these things sorted out now while it's still new and under warranty. :)

Back up. Thanks to Jason for getting someone to reboot the machine...
(Note that we don't currently have a way to reboot the machine remotely, which is A Bad Thing.)
