The problem is political. One China, One language, One Wikipedia, and so on.
May I suggest that the Wikipedia be allowed and left to sink or swim. If you
don't like it, don't contribute to it.

On Cantonese: there are (a) a minor language which is noticeably different
to the local major language (b) books and newspapers published in a
reasonably fixed script in said minor language that are distinctly not in
the major language (c) people asking for the Wikipedia. Given these, what's
the remaining problem? That the local major language is Chinese?
