Nice notes, Brion, et al! Sorry I couldn't make it to the Noisebridge meetup. I tried but gave up after I would have been more than an hour late due to circumstances beyond my control.
I added a point in the Meetingworks notes about my recommendations -- in http://talknicer.com/wm10ca.pdf -- specifically that trying to piggyback on a Canada chapter wouldn't be as good. There would be a huge legal advantage to a separate but affiliated nonprofit mutual benefit corporation, able to compete with the Foundation on several measures that the Foundation isn't even measuring at present. Aren't nonprofits in Canada restricted on certain political issues in a way that California nonprofit mutual benefit corporations are not? Canadians are often forbidden from commenting on high profile court cases, including internet speech issues that often arise, and I imagine a Canadian Chapter might have similar restrictions.
I am taking Erik Moeller's advice and trying to implement the software parts of my recommendations at present. It is going faster than I expected so far, but not by much.
If anyone wants to revive the Stanford bid for Wikimania 2012, please be my guest (it's just sitting there on Meta, and the listed campus point of contact is still willing to be), but since Karen Sue Rolph doesn't think it would be a good idea, as she mentioned on the Wikimedia California list recently, I'm not willing to work on it any further. I would rather help out the nonprofit venues than a private school, especially since Stanford has recently severely restricted its policy for full text on campus online access to materials in their libraries and archives.
Best regards, James Salsman

A few of us are meeting up at 6pm tomorrow at Noisebridge, in the Mission, to talk about all things wiki. We'll be greeting Mark Dilley, an awesome Portland-based wiki guy who's on his way back from facilitating RecentChangesCamp Canberra, in Australia -- and presumably full of great wiki tales (especially relating to academia, I believe).
And indeed there were some interesting tales. :D
There's a signup page (which we've all been sort of ignoring) on their wiki: https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Wiki_meetup and a MeetingNotes page for building an agenda, if you're feeling all organization-y: http://meetingwords.com/rccx-sf
We all took some notes on the meetingwords (etherpad) page, go take a look!
