Subject: [GLAM] Call for Participation: 2017 Art+Feminism Wikipedia
Edit-a-thon
To: glam(a)lists.wikimedia.org
Hi everyone,
We are once again in the process of co-organizing the international
Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thons and we are writing to solicit your
participation. This could take the form of forwarding this call onto folks
you think would want to organize an event; sharing info about the project
on your social media channels; organizing your own edit-a-thon; or any
other way you can think to spread the word. Any and all participation is
greatly appreciated!

*Call for Participation: 4th Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, March,
2017*
DON’T AGONIZE, ORGANIZE! The award winning, record breaking Art+Feminism
Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is happening this March. Join us again or organize
for the first time to improve Wikipedia and affirm the importance of the
arts and intersectional feminisms. It matters more than ever as we face a
post-fact world, and what may follow. Email us at info(a)artandfeminism.org to
learn more about organizing an event.
WHY?
Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify
as female. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the
practical effect of the disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of
female participation. Established in 2014, Art+Feminism Wikipedia
Edit-a-thon is a response to the gender gap in content and participation on
Wikipedia.
As the lead co-organizers of Art+Feminism, we’ve been deeply disturbed by
the sheer amount of fake news on social media, and its influence on the
recent US election. We believe this makes our work even more pressing. Now
more than ever we must gather together to improve Wikipedia and affirm work
of women, people of color, immigrants, the LGBTQIA+ community and other
marginalized peoples.
HOW?
Hold an Edit-a-thon at your local university, artist run center, museum,
community center, etc! Art+Feminism Edit-a-thons address content and
participation gaps by inviting people of all gender identities and
expressions to gather for communal updating of Wikipedia entries related to
art and feminism. The leadership collective supports Edit-a-thon organizers
by: providing an organizer’s kit
<http://www.artandfeminism.org/organizing-kit/> with suggested workflow,
promotional and training materials, and more; funding to defray the costs
of refreshments and childcare; and training and support.
WHEN?
The 2017 Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at The Museum of Modern Art,
New York will take place on Saturday, March 11, 2017. Node events are
welcome to hold their event on this day or any other date in March, 2017
that makes sense for your community. To learn more and get involved,
contact the lead co-organizers via email: info(a)artandfeminism.org.
In solidarity,

Hi, y'all. All hands on deck! Bay Area WikiSalon is hosting a Wikipedia Day
16 in SF on January 15, and we could use some planning help in making it
more interesting, fun, and useful. Please add your ideas to the event page
- it's a wiki!
We would also like to run an edit-a-thon in the corner of the lounge during
the party. Anybody up for coordinating that?
Please edit our event page directly so we can start advertising right away!
We could also use a video to run during setup and for early arrivals. Got
any ideas? Also, please start thinking about ways of promoting this. Thanks!

Heads-up to any Wikipedia/Wikimedia peeps or interested parties that are
going to be in the San Francisco Bay Area on Sunday, January 15, 2017
starting at 2 p.m.:

Hope you can make it. Be sure to RSVP. Cheers! Wayne Calhoon (and Ben
Creasy and Stephen LaPorte) - co-organizers.

PS: Please join in and add your edits to the event page and to its talk
page! It is a wiki! We can also use your help, if you are up to it. Put
your name somewhere on the volunteer list.
Hi all,
There's been a lot of interesting in teaching the Ally Skills Workshop
to Wikimedians, especially those with a lot of responsibility for
resolving disputes or moderating users. The Ally Skills Workshop
teaches people with more power and privilege practical everyday ways
of supporting people with less. I taught an Ally Skills Workshop at
the 2015 Wikimania in Mexico City and got a lot of positive response.
I would love to see this workshop be available to more Wikimedians.
In an ideal world, the people teaching this workshop would be
experienced Wikimedians themselves. I'm teaching a train-the-trainers
on Sunday, January 15 in Oakland, California, and would love to see
Wikimedians there:
https://frameshiftconsulting.com/2016/11/26/ally-skills-workshop-train-the-…
There's also an online version on January 22.
As a reminder, the Ally Skills Workshop materials are all licensed CC BY-SA. :)
Thanks for your time,
-VAL
