Hi all! This is looking ahead a bit, but Joseph Seddon ([[user:seddon]])
will be in town over the weekend of July 8-9 and would love to meet some SF
Wikimedians! Shall we plan a meetup for that weekend? It's been a long
time....
best,
Phoebe

especially by the future generations.
THANK YOU
Hi all,
I just added several new list members -- welcome, everyone! If I subscribed
you it's either because you signed up at the West Coast Wiki Conference or
told me at another event that you wanted to be added. This is the informal
coordinating and announcement list for Bay Area Wikimedians/Wikipedians; if
you have any questions about it, please contact me (phoebe.ayers(a)gmail.com).
For all the new list members (and a reminder for everyone else): our next
event is Maker Faire, which is *next weekend*, Saturday & Sunday in San
Mateo! The fair is a great time, highly recommended if you can make it. And
if you are able to volunteer a few hours at our booth, even better -- the
signup sheet (and list of things to bring) is here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco/Maker_Faire_2011
Please sign up ASAP so we can get your name on the list.
This is the fourth (!) year that we will be at Maker Faire, and it's always
a blast -- thousands of people who are fans of wikipedia and are delighted
to talk to you about it (and fire-breathing robots as a bonus!)

Hey Bay Area Wikimedians,
If you're interested, you may want to check out the Hack for Egypt
Event at Stanford this Saturday, May 14. It's an Unconference and
Hackathon for Egypt so programmers and engineers will gather at
Stanford University to meet with Egyptian activists and discuss
applications that could help their cause. I told my friends that are
putting this on that I would at least get the word out so if you know
anyone that's interested just tell them to show up. Details below:
Saturday, May 14 · 10:00am - 6:00pm
Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford--Building 550
416 Escondido Mall
Stanford, CA
For more information, visit: http://bit.ly/CloudtoStreet. To RSVP, go
to hackforegypt.eventbrite.com--or just show up!
Food is provided.
Cheers,
Kul

Hi SF wikimedia,
based on our experiences of the past few years, I have started a list of all
the supplies we will need. Please sign up for a volunteer slot and if you
can bring any of this stuff:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco/Maker_Faire_2011
Dear awesome coders and others, if you have a displayable visualization or
game in mind can you either link it or somehow get it to one of us to
install? Offline stuff would be the bomb. (Stephen, did you ask them about
internet access?)
cheers,
Phoebe

Good news, we have a spot for Maker Faire on May 21 and 22! This gives us ~3
weeks to plan an amazing booth.
Since this is a '''Maker''' faire, I think we should should brainstorm some
simple opportunities to allow people to make/build/contribute at our
booth! Last year we had computers with Wikipedia games (the language
guessing game and the article race game), a larger screen with a map of
recent changes, and volunteers talked to people and answered
questions. Simple and interactive work best. It can be noisy and crowded,
but that article race game last year had people engaged. See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco_12 for last
year's planning notes.
If you have any ideas, stories from previous years, or are interested in
volunteering, please let me know and/or share on wiki:

Cheers,
Stephen
PS, ...here are some bizarre/practical suggestions for this year, from Jon
circa 2010: "Temporary tattoo's, new games (Jimmy side scroller, "Citation
Needed" - guess the fact), Offline Presentations & Auxiliary internet access
methods."

I would like to participate but aparently I first have to get the guy who
proposed my editing restrictions to support my appeal. This is suprisingly
difficult to do online but very easy to do in real life.
Do people want to try MakerFairePedia again this year?
Best regards,
James Salsman

If you plan to volunteer and haven't told me already, please email me as
soon as you can with your full name and day(s), and I will be sure you are
on the list for the faire.
Phoebe, they gave us wireless, but I will see if we can get actual internet
access.
Cheers,
Stephen

Hi SF,
As you know Wikimedia-SF has had a booth at Maker Faire the past three
years. Maker Faire is awesome! It's a fair amount of work to put together,
however. Last year Jon Davis and I coordinated the booth. Unfortunately this
year we have both been super busy all spring, and we missed the deadline for
sending in the registration form.
If anyone else is interested in leading the Maker Faire efforts, we could
still ask if there are any last-minute places. But we would need to act very
quickly -- so please speak up if you want to do this (or just do it --
contact info is on the website). And if no one is interested in leading the
booth, we will take a break from Maker Faire this year (and return
triumphantly next year???)
best,
Phoebe
p.s. How would people feel about a get-together in a couple weeks ... the
weekend of the 23rd? Maybe Sunday the 24th? It's been a long time since
we've had a casual meetup.
