Hallo,
how many photos from each country will take part from European WLM competition?
-- Raul Kern
I don't know if it's the best idea to just take the 10 or 20 best from all countries, or use other ways as well to get a shortlist. In line with the dutch contest we should think about what with like 50 or 100.000 pictures (or maybe even a higher guess) as the top guess. going to 12.000 pictures is a lot and you will miss some pretty good pictures. going throught all countries is surely impossible i think. Maybe other people outside of jurys as well might be an idea, and for the rest maybe 20 pictures picked by the country juries. Althought it seems weird to me if a picture finished fifth in a country and finishes first in europe. Mvg, Bas

I think it makes sense to "reward" only, let's say, the 5 top winners (in whatever categories)... but consider 10 submissions to the European Juri (to categories that match).
I thought there would be only one picture submited to the european contest, from each country. But Nuno, what do you mean: 5 winners in a country, but 10 submissions to the european contest?

Maybe 3 from each country? A number between 1 and 5 could be appropiated.

Hi everyone,
All images eligible for a national competition are eligible for the European competition. How the European jury will implement this is up to them. In practice they will probably choose from the national winning images. To worry about the jury is on my list to do somewhere in August btw ;-)

I think it would be easier for the european jury to just choose from the winning images. The fact that the winning "local" pictures will be eligible for the european competition can also work as a prize.

Well, Maarten, I rather do it sooner, as we (all) still have to find a national juri, and convince them to participate. And since the challenge is in September, the sooner, the better ;) I predict that things will be easier for this task, if we already have a draft of both national and general rules.
In the Commons page it is said: « The European contest will be jury based competition for the best photo of a monument where a European jury will select winners from nominees taken from the winners of the national quality contests. »
Like I said, it seems to me that "now" is a good moment to "worry" about this :-)
Well then, that says it all. The winners from each contest are eligible for the european contest. But since each country has its own rules, and the number of winners (from different categories) depends on those rules, it think Nuno has the best solution. Send 5 (i would go with only 5) from each category. Even if there are only 3 official local winners with a local prize, the 5 best will be considered to go to the european contest.

Hi,
when we phrased that, we had in mind to keep many options open :) You could define "winner" also as "top 10".
I do agree it makes sense to define it before August, because participants (and local juries) need to know what they are up to. And it is not really a hard thing, just a decision - in the end the outcome of that decision is not that big of a deal.
Basically, I think a top-X (with X being some number higher than 0) would make sense to submit to a European contest. Since all will be high quality probably, it would make sense to try keep the number somewhat low (<10-15) but also it makes some sense to make it higher than 1, because sometimes the runner ups are very close.
If we allow no. 2-X in the competition though, realize this might give an odd situation where no. 2 of a country ends up higher than no. 1 in the European competition - this could be interpreted as a slap on the fingers of the national jury (bad decision). Would that be acceptable in all countries?
In any case, I think this is a perfect topic to decide on in the May workshop, so lets keep that as a deadline, but discussions are of course welcome here.
Best, Lodewijk

In any case, I think this is a perfect topic to decide on in the May workshop, so lets keep that as a deadline, but discussions are of course welcome here. Best, Lodewijk
The 2nd of a country ending up higher than the 1st in the European Competition is in fact a problem. Maybe there could be 2 different groups. Maybe the european jury could decide between the 1st ones from each country (resulting in a overall winner - for each category), and they could also decide between the rest (2nd and 5th place in each category, for example).

Hoi. Is there a "Topics/Agenda" wiki page for the May workshop?

Would the third ending up higher than the second be a problem too, then?
(to be clear: I wouldn't have a problem with either situation, since like Nuno says, there are many factors. Even the exact criteria used by the jury will differ on European level compared to for example the Portuguese jury).

I think that case would not be so problematic, in my opinion (the 1st place is the "real" winner). But like you say, the criteria used can be different, and if we make that clear from the beginning, in the rules, etc., people will have to accept that there would be, in fact, 2 different competitions, with different results.

And there are other way to see: If a image don't win the local competition, they could still be motivate to be the European winner. A 1st place can't be mad to not win twice, and a 2nd place would became really happy if he win ;) _____ *Béria Lima* Wikimedia Portugal http://wikimedia.pt (351) 963 953 042

I participated in organizing some competitions "scaled" (or level organizated) ,much more modest but with the same purpose:increase the interest and participation. In these contests is often used the formula to select finalist works by the "local" jury and, of course, the local winners. The local organization then sends all the finalists works (awarded or not) at "general" competitionand the "general" jury will select the winners among all the "local" finalists. This presents advantages in terms of participants: If your work is finalist it colud be awared localy or general, or both, or none. The photography is an art and therefore has a touch of subjectivity that is given by the people of the jury. Is normal in such competitions That win a work that has not been awarded locally.

For a specific category, you could have: * 1st place - rewarded with 1st prize * 2nd place - rewarded with 2ns prize ... * 5th place - rewarded with 5th prize * 6th place - not rewarded ... * 10th place - not rewarded
If we set the voting by "weights" (like the "European Song Contest" way of voting, but coming from each juri), the rankings are automatically determined, so there is no extra effort with it.
By allowing submissions beyond the 5th (up to the 10th) positions, we are increasing the chances that a contestant not winning on his country could still win the "European" challenge.
You know me, I think all things that rely on "taste" are always subject to be different in different contexts/countries/races/days/whatever :-)
