Hi all,
TL;DR * We have developed a map feature for Wiki Loves Monuments 2017. * If you are a local organizer, please read the details below to learn more about what it is, what you can expect, ... :)
As you may know, the international team has been working on a series of projects to make more of your more than 1.4 million monuments and the data associated with them discoverable. To this end, we have worked on a series of projects in the past months:
* With WMSE we have worked on Wikidata migration of monuments lists. * For data already on Wikidata and geotagged, we have developed Monumental which is the tool targeted at exposing the data we have and the ones we don't have. :) This email is about this tool.
In the past week, we have put Monumental[0] in front of testers and the overall feedback that we have got is that the tool is intuitive to use, it is fun to explore the monuments using it, and it provides a smoother experience for uploading photos to Wikimedia Commons. With this feedback, we decided to set up Monumental for Wiki Loves Monuments during this year's contest. This is an experimental tool and this email is going to provide some details about what you can expect from the tool. We are also open to hear your other comments on this front. :)
==How can I access Monumental?== While Monumental is a stand-alone tool, there is a Wiki Loves Monuments version of it that lives in maps.wikilovesmonuments.org [Please do not share this link widely until we are ready to announce the page.] We still have a couple of fixes we need to make to the tool.
== What if some monuments are missing in my city/country? == The maps on maps.wikilovesmonuments.org will only show monuments that are listed on Wikidata, i.e., * It won't show monuments that are not (yet) on Wikidata, * If a monument is in Wikidata but it's not geotagged (with P625 [1]), it won't be exposed via this tool for now. * If a monument is in Wikidata and geotagged, it will be exposed as long as it has any value for property P1435 (heritage designation)[2] OR any value for property P2186 (WLM identifier)
== What if I want to "fix" any data on maps.wikilovesmonuments.org? == All of the data comes from Wikidata, so you can make any corrections (or improvements) on Wikidata directly.
== What if I see monuments on maps.wikilovesmonuments.org that aren't on my country's list? == There may be a few reasons that monuments appear on the map that aren't eligible for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments in 2017 -- the local organizers may decide to exclude certain monuments from the competition. To avoid any misunderstandings, and yet to allow people to contribute photos of monuments (even if they're not eligible to participate as part of this year's contest), we will show a banner right above the upload link. -- example https://maps.wikilovesmonuments.org/object/406972
* If you are the local organizer for a country and you want this banner to be removed for your country's monuments, i.e., if you want to accept any monuments photo submission as part of your contest and via maps.wikilovesmonuments.org, please contact us. We can remove this message from the upload pages for your country. * Everyone else, the message will be there and it is the responsibility of the user to check the local rules and figure out if their upload is eligible for the local competition. * If you are the organizer for Ireland, Poland, Sweden or UK: you are guaranteed that uploades via maps.wikilovesmonuments.org are uploads for your campaign and they all should be considered. We do not show the warning message in the upload pages corresponding to your monuments.
== How can I find photos uploaded via the map? == They will all appear in Category:Uploaded with Monumental.[4] * If monument in Wikidata got value for P373 (Wikimedia Commons category), image will be added to this category * If not, picture will be added to category "Cultural heritage monuments in X", where X is country name.
Comments and questions are welcome! :)
Best, Lily, on behalf of Wiki Loves Monuments international team

Wow, that's really nice.
Great work, Slaporte and yarl!
I guess the "browse countries" and "more countries soon" text will become a link shortly. However, what surprised me is that got to the map doesn't show any monument :(
Best regards

This requires to add monuments to Wikidata:
1) Required: Wikidata item with geo coordiantes (P625) and heritage designation (P1435) 2) many other properties are optional but useful to have
I updated this today manually: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19756361 and it showed on map instantly.
We have defined several types of Latvian heritage designations to be used for P1435, these might not be final.

This requires to add monuments to Wikidata:
The "go to the map" link shows no monument at all. Nothing on Ireland, nothing on Latvia... whereas browsing differently, they are included.
Have you zoomed until a "very close" level? Cause I see monuments in Italy starting from a sub-regional level.

You are right! You need to zoom in a lot in order for them to be loaded. Then you can zoom out and they are still shown even at the full-globe level. It's probably related to not being able to load too many monuments at once, but it is confusing. :/

That is right, monuments will be loaded at map zoom 11 (you can find zoom number in the url, it's a number after the last colon.
It's probably related to not being able to load too many monuments at once, but it is confusing. :/
This is also right, it's beyond impossible to (1) load that amount of data at once in reasonable time (2) display it without browser crash.
I've deployed fix for map, right now left panel shows more meaningful text: *"Please zoom in to load data"* https://maps.wikilovesmonuments.org/map?c=54.6357:-3.7024:6

This is a great tool. I am uploading/updating in wikidata the list of monuments for Greece now, and i have tested uploading from the map. There is a feature request: when uploading from the lists hosted on Commons we also include a template ( https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Monument_templates) with the wlm id. It would be easy (I guess) to fill it using Property:P2186, if it exists in Wikidata.

Monument identifier depends from country to country. Right now only countries listed on landing page are fully supported (Ireland, Sweden, UK, Poland) and in that case identifier is added. We want to include more countries, but we need their monuments on Wikidata first, visualizing it is the last step :).
Just looked at the map now, since our competition hasn't started, and would like to ask: on what basis/category are the monuments retrieved from Wikidata? Since we didn't make lists on Wikidata in Israel, it's normal that our monuments don't show up, but there are a few that do show up in Israel from Wikidata, and they contain duplicates and just some overall weirdness (plus, they are not necessarily on our lists). Are they UNESCO sites? What are the categories used?
Thanks, —Yan.

Hi Yan,
There is no category on Wikidata. The retrieve is done with a Wikidata query, probably something along « all the items on Wikidata with the P1435 property » ( https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P1435 , with maybe some refinements, Paweł correct me if I'm wrong). Indeed, depending on the country, all the heritage designation may not be included in WLM (that is why there is a « check the local competition rules https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2017/Participating_countries.» warning).
I see only 8 points in Israel, all of them being having P1435 = Q9259 (World Heritage Site, which is indeed a UNESCO protection). I notice only one duplicate in Jerusalem (3 items that probably should be merge or at least corrected, I'll look into that), is there others?

The query is really simple, it shows items from Wikidata with coordinates and with any value P1435 (heritage designation) or P2186 (WLM ID).
Thanks for the answers. I'll see if it's possible to at partly copy the lists to Wikidata.
The only duplicates I noticed are indeed in Jerusalem, but it's 3 identical sites—which all represent a large ambiguous monument, which in our lists consists of dozens of specific ones.

Not exact duplicates in fact, there is a global item (Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls (Q15726304) https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15726304) and two more specific (Old City of Jerusalem (Q213274) https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q213274 and Walls of Jerusalem (Q2918723) https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2918723). Such divide is not uncommon on Wikidata but here the data are duplicated (and most probably shouldn't, I left a message to the editor who added these data to get an explanation and hopefullly remove the duplicated informations, it should be resolved soon).
If you need help creating items on Wikidata, don't hesitate to ask!
