Hi all,
I'm trying to summarize here the status for all the country updates. I would like to ask you all to correct whenever something is wrong. Please read it carefully! Suggestions to each other might be helpful.
Sometimes I ask specifically for updates - especially when I think that sharing information might be helpful. It would be great if you could really do so on this list, so that others can use it too.
Best,
lodewijk
================================ Participating countries definitely: Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Spain, France, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania
Participating countries maybe/probably: Andorra, Belarus, Belgium, Finland, Norway, Russia, Sweden
Countries unknown/maybe: Italy, Kosovo, Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, Slovenia
Relevant links: Database: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Monument... Progress table (please fill in - it is expanded): http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Progress ================================ *Andorra*: Amical said they would be willing to organize WLM in Andorra. I have since then not heard anything any more, and cannot find information online. Update would be welcome. Monuments available in European WLM database. ( wikilovesmonuments.ad registered/used?)
*Belarus*: Joined in late, but are working hard on the lists. Some 22% done, more to come. Nothing yet in the database. Working on trademark agreement (temp) with WMF to do the contest.
*Belgium*: There is some interest. The Dutch Wikipedians have created the lists already, work is being done to transfer the Walloon lists to frwiki. Main bottle neck is real life organization part. Real life meeting begin July.
*Switzerland *(CH): Website is up, but needs still adaptation to some best practices/agreements from Berlin. Lists are there and imported. Partners OK it seems, things seem to run fine!
*Denmark*: Lists are available, with relevant data. Not yet available in the European Database. Unclear status for partners, awards and jury.
*Germany*: Lists is still biggest bottle neck, together with motivated volunteers throughout the country. No data yet in database. Jury, awards etc will work out. Seperate update email would be very very welcome!
*Estonia*: Lists are available, also in European database. Have some partners, have set up website. How is jury, awards etc working out?
*Spain*: Both Amical and Wikimedia España are working on organizing this event in Spain together. The status of the lists seems to depend on the region. More detailed update would be very welcome!
*Finland*: Maarten is trying hard to put them into touch with the correct government. Hopefully more info soon.
*France*: Working on getting the lists on the wiki, data is available in European database. Further status currently unknown. Update very welcome!
*Liechtenstein*: Only some 175 monuments, so should be doable for CH/AT to help out. Unclear if this is actually happening or not. No locals known? WMCH might be able to help, but no reaction yet to request.
*Luxemburg:* Lists are available onwiki and in the european database. Bottle neck is volunteers - none are known to be active on this. Any contacts/help would be welcome.
*Netherlands*: Lists complete (& in Eur.db.) , National Heritage board is very cooperative. over 400.000 images released on 800px scale, but cannot be processed until after WLM. Heemschut supports a lot, and freelancer is helping with the press side. Have found some potential awards, working now on jury.
*Norway:* Started late, but working hard to make up for it. Are in touch with heritage board to get the lists, after that they will be able to move fast because of existing contacts with partners/sponsors. More news coming up soon.
*Austria*: No page http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011_in_Austria&action=edit&redlink=1yet on commons! Lists still under construction (?) similar situation with federative problems as in Germany. Unclear if help with contacts would be appreciated. Update very welcome, situation mainly unknown.
*Poland*: Lists are available, also in the database. Working hard on partners & sponsors and seem to do well. Looking forward!
*Portugal*: Lists complete (only continental?), also in database; addresses still missing. Partners and sponsors going well. Seems everything on schedule?
*Romania*: Joined in late, status mainly unknown. Structure for the lists has been set up, but currently not filled in yet. Have cooperation with local open source association/community, and temp trademark agreement WMF underway.
*Russia*: Are joining in just now, and I will leave it to them to introduce themselves here with their status.
*Sweden*: Currently unclear what the status is - unable to find much online. Update would be very welcome!
Hi @all! Update for Austria: We're working on the lists, about 50% are ready for WLM. In some days we'll have a meeting with the Bundesdenkmalamt ("federal office for monuments") to talk about WLM. I'll try to create our page this days.

Hi Alex, Could you check the page I made for Bundesdenkmalamt on the English Wikipedia? I am trying to fill out the page on the European Heritage Days here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Heritage_Days#Responsible_institutions...
in addition to continuing what I started on the page for [National Heritage Site]
Ideally for each participating country, I would like an article on the English wikipedia for 1) the native name (with diacritics, if necessary) of "Open Monument Day" 2) the native name for the organizer of these days for the European Heritage Days in the local country 3) the native name for a [National Heritage Site] and the organization that protects it 4) the native name for the organization that promotes (3) and which is often the same as (2) 5) the native name for the governmental body in charge of (3) which is usually the Ministry of Culture for the native country
I am willing to do the translation into English and make the page on the English wikipedia if you supply me with the proper pagename in the native wikipedia.

I think I just finished the "reconstruction" part (to rebuild the wikipedia lists from it):
http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt/tools/plist/export.php?region=Faro
But you'll have to wait someone copies everything to the lists. Like I said to Maarten in Berlin, it's easier if we provide you our database (which has some issues fixed). BTW, we have already all regions:
http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt/monumentos.php
(Azores is still missing a lot of coordinates, we can't find anyone to help).
I'll have to do some cleaning on the addresses if you find them necessary. I'd say we have nearly 70% of them, but they are mostly pointless, in my opinion.
We also have stats available already: http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.pt/tools/stats/index.php
I would say website is finished, we are focusing right now in spreading out the word.
Maybe Beria can update the Progress page on Commons?
Sweden:
Unclear? No!
We have a partnership with the National Heritage Board and the Nordicmuseeet, and working on the final details on the format of the competition. We have started advertising the contest, both on Wikipedia and our blog. http://www.wikilovesmonuments.se redirected so far to projects page, but only temporarily.
Tomorrow we will meet with the National Heritage Board and discuss among other things, their databases and how we can use them in the competition.

Update for Italy: still working on lobbying with Ministry of Cultural Heritage. Law, as known, is not with us, it is not easy to find a solution within the current legislation, but we're not giving up (and neither are our contacts at the Ministry). Meeting in Rome this Thursday. It seems lists are available in some format, so hopefully it would be not so difficult to format them.

Finland: Maarten is trying hard to put them into touch with the correct government. Hopefully more info soon. France: Working on getting the lists on the wiki, data is available in European database. Further status currently unknown. Update very welcome! Liechtenstein: Only some 175 monuments, so should be doable for CH/AT to help out. Unclear if this is actually happening or not. No locals known? WMCH might be able to help, but no reaction yet to request. Luxemburg: Lists are available onwiki and in the european database. Bottle neck is volunteers - none are known to be active on this. Any contacts/help would be welcome. Netherlands: Lists complete (& in Eur.db.) , National Heritage board is very cooperative. over 400.000 images released on 800px scale, but cannot be processed until after WLM. Heemschut supports a lot, and freelancer is helping with the press side. Have found some potential awards, working now on jury. Norway: Started late, but working hard to make up for it. Are in touch with heritage board to get the lists, after that they will be able to move fast because of existing contacts with partners/sponsors. More news coming up soon. Austria: No page yet on commons! Lists still under construction (?) similar situation with federative problems as in Germany. Unclear if help with contacts would be appreciated. Update very welcome, situation mainly unknown. Poland: Lists are available, also in the database. Working hard on partners & sponsors and seem to do well. Looking forward! Portugal: Lists complete (only continental?), also in database; addresses still missing. Partners and sponsors going well. Seems everything on schedule? Romania: Joined in late, status mainly unknown. Structure for the lists has been set up, but currently not filled in yet. Have cooperation with local open source association/community, and temp trademark agreement WMF underway. Russia: Are joining in just now, and I will leave it to them to introduce themselves here with their status. Sweden: Currently unclear what the status is - unable to find much online. Update would be very welcome! _______________________________________________ Wiki Loves Monuments mailing list WikiLovesMonuments@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikilovesmonuments http://www.wikilovesmonuments.eu

Unclear? No!
We have a partnership with the National Heritage Board and the Nordicmuseeet, and working on the final details on the format of the competition. We have started advertising the contest, both on Wikipedia and our blog http://wikimediasverige.wordpress.com/2011/06/17/arbetet-med-wiki-loves-monuments-2011-har-startat/. http://www.wikilovesmonuments.se http://www.wikilovesmonuments.se%20 redirected so far to projects page, but only temporarily.
Tomorrow we will meet with the National Heritage Board and discuss among other things, their databases and how we can use them in the competition.

Update from Sweden
As Lars Aronsson has told 5137 monuments in Sweden now listed in the Swedish language Wikipedia with unique IDs, names, and municipality, most of them also with coordinates (97 %) and other details. We will launch our website in the coming days and send out a joint press release with our partners.
We will have our awards ceremony at the Nordiska museet, which is very good news. It is not only a great museum, but also a fantastic building.
I have a question:
Can we accept images in the contest on items that do not have a unique ID?
In Sweden we have many buildings that are protected at the local level, because of its historical value, but are not necessary included in the National Heritage Board's records. We also have protected ships, and other types of monuments (such as statues, and ancient monuments). We also have Fornminnesregistret (National Ancient Remains register) containing more than 1.7 million entries.

This should be decided by locals, but as general critera we should follow the verifiability Wikipedian principle. Those buildings may be included in some official register of whatever type, national, regional or local. Those registers probably have some kind of ID. This ID will be unique at his level, regional or local. If you want to make them also unique at national level, then you must prefix it with something like "register + id"

In the Netherlands we explicitely decided to have the competition only with 'state monuments'. In the Netherlands there is also the concept of local monuments, but that is completely unstructured, so not clear what falls under it, some municiples don't work with numbers, and a lot of lists are not really published.
If you accept such pictures, they will also be hard to categorize, so they won't be that much usefull either.

Andre

Why not usefull? We have articles on almost all Swedish cities and villages and pictures of buildings are valuable to the project as a whole. And there are adequate geographical categories on Commons.

Ok, maybe I phrased it wrong. Yes, they of course can be usefull, but with the lack of an id and a proper database behind it, all the categorisation will need to be done by hand. If you 10.000 of pictures, that will be one hell of a job, and you can't expect the uploaders to do that either as they might not know/understand the categorisation system.
And to be clear, I am not telling what or what not to do, I only explained the reasoning why we made the decision in nl, so you can weight that in your local discussion.

Andre

Update from Amical.
wikilovesmonuments.ad is not registered. We have all information at http://wikilovesmonuments.cat Targeted lists for Catalan area are complete. That is 100% of Andorra and about 47% of Spain. We have 3 sponsors confirmed and working with a partner in Andorra for a sponsorship. One of the sponsors is interested in a transnational award for an euroregion including south of France. Awards and categories are still pending. Working on to form a jury. Probably events to organize: Wiki Expedition Andorra and Wiki Takes Barcelona.

================================Andorra: Amical said they would be willing to organize WLM in Andorra. I have since then not heard anything any more, and cannot find information online. Update would be welcome. Monuments available in European WLM database. (wikilovesmonuments.ad registered/used?)
Spain: Both Amical and Wikimedia España are working on organizing this event in Spain together. The status of the lists seems to depend on the region. More detailed update would be very welcome!

We're working on the lists, but I'm afraid that there are many great gaps still to close. But it's different from state to state. I already sent an e-mail to Maarten for some test imports, but since we have few template-based lists (two pilots working, though) and will need different templates for every state/area, this will take some time. I hope that I can focus on that during the second half of July when the semester has ended.
Currently we're looking for jury candidates, this is going quite well, actually. We'll have another round of news updates towards the end of this month (village pump/signpost, blog etc.) and hope to have a jury (s)elected by mid August at the latest.
We're also looking for awards/prices, but unfortunately we still have very little to present.
I've been in contact with some partners lately, but nothing decided so far. There are two smaller towns (and probably a third one which is already active on Wikipedia) who are very interested in doing local events, hopefully there will be some kind of a longer "Wiki takes"-event in the state of Hesse, but the budget for that is not yet confirmed/granted.
There are still very few people involved with organizing WLM as a national contest, many Wikipedians are working on lists and articles for their local areas, though. So in short, there's a lack of people who are leading on issues/topics.

Hi all !
2011/6/20 Lodewijk lodewijk@effeietsanders.org:
France: Working on getting the lists on the wiki, data is available in European database. Further status currently unknown. Update very welcome!
My apologies about the lack of updates.
We are still working in order to complete the lists of monuments. Every département (see [[Departments of France]] on English Wikipedia) will have his full list. In order to have lighter lists, we are making lists by cities, when they have 20 monuments or more. The hardest is the geolocalization.
Wikimédia France has hired new employees, and our program manager is going to contact the French Ministry of Culture, in order to make of the WLM operation more official in France.
Our website is now operating (with some updates to make, welcome Russia). Currently, it have only one page, but we have started to talk about it.
I'm going to mobilize our communication group, in order to launch the press release, the posters and the documentation. For the financial part, we have to justify all our outcomes. The participation of Wikimédia France to WLM may be a material support ; printings for example.
Update from Spain: * We have about 60% of the monuments lists, some in spanish, others in catalan (from Viquipedia) and others in galician (from Galipedia), but now we have an automatic tool that generates a good schema to create the final lists (http://www.wikilm.es/generar_wikitexto.php). We hope to finish this work in a few weeks. * We have a simple web site with the basics of the contest, in spanish and galician, and we are working in catalan version. See wikilm.es. * We have started to contact with some sponsors, but we don't have results in this area * We don't have jury nor awards, and we have to work in local rules
