The 2009 strategy proposal linked towards the end, of which the
GSoC proposal is a limited subset, did not get any criticism after several
high-profile opportunities. Both proposals are intended to be language- and
keyword-neutral. It would be best if the initial bot were built and tested
on some other wiki than the English Wikipedia, so the Bot Approvals Group
will be able to get concrete answers to any questions they might have.
The use of templates should be optional; one way to do that would be to
allow the use of a mirroring namespace to hold the templates, instead of
the primary namespace. But there is probably a better way. Thank you for
something so interesting to think about.
>> *Prepare a table of each word in article dumps indicating its age. *

It would be non-trivial for a large production dump, but for a small
subset of articles in a given dump, there are deterministic algorithms
which perform with sufficient accuracy to form the specified partial basis
of a selection heuristic. Creating such a table is at worst O(N) in
revisions, but there are ways to hash words with N-gram contexts so that
moved and blanked text is more likely to be treated correctly than what raw
diffs would lead people to believe might happen. This is equivalent to the
general blame problem, and I look forward to explaining the history of the
problem (see e.g., http://wikitrust.soe.ucsc.edu/talks-and-papers ) to show
why the N-gram hash solution is best.

Yes, and I want to store questions in GIFT format to allow follow-on
integration
with the Global Learning Xprize Meta-Team deliverables. Presentation of a
GIFT question means converting it to a form instead of just displaying it
in markup. The question pertaining to whether direct integration is a
reasonable follow-on goal depends on the extent to which branching scenario
interactive fiction role-play content, such as shown in
http://www.capuano.biz/papers/EL_2014.pdf
and http://talknicer.com/GLMORS_2014.pdf
can be automatically created. I think it can be, and look forward to
discussing the matter in detail with co-mentor volunteers.

Hello everyone,
I don't know how many of you are following Wikimedia-l or the Gendergap
lists. In case you are, then you may have seen this message from Siko
(Sorry for cross-posting). In case you are not, then, please have a look at
it.
The Inspire team is getting ready for a great campaign addressing the
gender gap that will kick off in March. You are doing great work to
increase gender diversity on Wikipedia. You may be interested in having a
leading role in this project too! You may also see that translators to
Spanish, Arabic and Ukrainian are needed for this project. Fortunately,
these languages are among the most active ones in the Education Program.
Please help us spread the word to your communities and/or sign up for this
project!
My best regards,
Samir

Subject: [Gendergap] Help launch the Inspire Grants Campaign in March 2015
To: Increasing female participation in Wikimedia projects <
gendergap(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi all,
During March we will be running an Inspire Campaign to proactively source
and support new projects aimed at addressing Wikimedia’s gender gap:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Inspire_Grants_%E2%80%93_Gen…
Our goals are two-fold:
1. Experiment with running scalable themed campaigns in IdeaLab to incubate
more initiatives aimed at having a focused collective impact.
2. Proactively support community initiatives aimed at increasing gender
diversity in contributors to, and content of, Wikimedia projects.
Why are we piloting with a gender gap theme? A variety of initiatives are
needed to increase diversity and reduce systemic bias on Wikimedia
projects, but so far these haven’t emerged organically at scale. Without
taking time to focus together on increasing gender diversity in our content
and contributors, this trend is likely to continue. WMF’s Individual
Engagement Grants and Project and Event Grants could support such
initiatives, and we're interested to learn how specifically inviting
proposals in this area can have an impact.
March is WikiWomen’s History Month, and it’s a great time to focus extra
attention and energy together on addressing the gender gap.
We need your help! We’re looking for volunteers to join our team in the
following roles:
1. Community organizers: Spread the the word about the campaign to your
local communities, maintain a friendly space in IdeaLab, facilitate
development of ideas and project teams. (March)
2. Translators: Translate campaign content and gender gap resources into
your language. This is a global campaign, so all languages are welcome.
Some languages we’d particularly like to be able to support include:
Spanish, Arabic, Malayalam, Telugu, and Ukrainian. (February and March)
3. Funding committee: Facilitate development of ideas to grant proposals,
support idea-creators to improve proposals, greenlight projects for funding
via either Individual Engagement Grants or Project & Event Grants. (March
and April)
If you’re interested in any of the above roles, please signup under
“Participants” on the planning page or email Siko or Alex by February 10th.

Warm regards,
The Inspire Team

Subject: [Gendergap] The Signpost
To: Increasing female participation in Wikimedia projects <
Gendergap(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hello,
I'm one of the new editor-in-chiefs of The Signpost, the community-written
newspaper covering the English Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
While it is hosted on the English Wikipedia it is independent of the WMF.
In March, we would like to include some content focusing on women's
contributions to Wikipedia and the gender gap. Some of this may be in
conjunction with the WMF blog, but the details have yet to be worked out.
We need ideas, but mostly we need people willing to create such content.
We have a very small staff and most of them are dedicated to producing our
regular features.
March aside, new content and suggestions are of course always welcome at
any time and on any issue. In particular, I've used this list to find
media stories that I've missed in the usual places I look when composing
the "In the media" section of the Signpost, and I wanted to say thanks for
that and if there's any media story or anything else that you think should
be featured in the Signpost, please let me know.
Thank you,
Gamaliel

Hello everyone,
It is really worth sharing the new blog post Sara Mortsell from Wikimedia
Sverige has written about open badges they use to acknowledge student and
educator work. This shows us how moral support would help encourage our
valuable volunteers. I hope you all will have a chance to read this post.

Hello everyone,
You may know that Wikimania 2015 <http://wikimania2015.wikimedia.org> will
be held in Mexico City between July 15 to 19 and that applications to get a
scholarship <https://wikimania2015.wikimedia.org/wiki/Scholarships> to
attend Wikimania are now open till February 16. Submissions
<https://wikimania2015.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions> for presentations
and other group work are also being accepted now until February 28.
Wikimania scholarships aim to help bring to Wikimania a good reflection of
the diversity of initiatives, views and voicees that make Wikipedia and the
sister projects so unique. We, therefore, encourage submissions from Global
South participants, volunteers focusing on gender diversity initiatives,
and other different perspectives.
You are playing a crucial role in raising the level of quality on
Wikipedia, increasing gender diversity by the high female participation you
helped the program have, and helping raise the awareness of the importance
of Wikipedia in educational institutions. Education will be a main focus at
Wikimania, therefore, we encourage all education-related initiatives to
join and present their initiative there.
I will be happy to work with you on any education-related session proposals
or scholarship applications that you may wish to submit. Please feel free
to reach out to me with any questions you may have.
Best regards,
