Hello Wikimedia colleagues,
Some of you may remember the LearnWiki project [0]. Regrettably, the
project goals were not completed within the planned timeline and budget. If
you would like to read that grant's final report, you may find it here [1].
I continue to believe that there would be value in offering more online
training to Wikimedians through videos, and possibly interactive tutorials
and other resources, that could help Wikimedians with novice to
intermediate skill levels to improve their proficiency with navigating
Wikimedia online cultures, principles, referencing, VisualEditor, the 2017
New WikiText Editor (which I like to call "NEWT") [2], and other topics.
Currently, there is a variety of training throughout the Wikimedia
ecosystem. Training varies across projects (e.g. Wikipedia, Wikidata,
Commons), languages (e.g. English, Arabic, Japanese), settings (e.g. GLAM
workshops, university classes, online individual study), formats (e.g. in
person, remote, video, interactive tutorial, lecture), and themes (e.g.
Wiki Loves Monuments, Women in Red, WikiProject Military History).
I plan to create and distribute a survey during the next few months to ask
individual Wikimedians and Wikimedia affiliate organizations about the
training practices that you have used to train yourself or others, how
effective you think that those training practices are, and what types of
training you would like to have available in the future. This survey would
inform the development of training materials and methods.
Improving the quality and diversity of training is a long term goal of
mine. This campaign is currently not funded by the Wikimedia Foundation or
any Wikimedia affiliate, although I believe that the survey data will
provide valuable input for possible projects, and people may request
funding for some of those projects (whether or not they are collaborating
with me). I do not plan to request WMF funds for myself in the foreseeable
future, but I may request funding for other contractors or grantees for
some projects that are related to this campaign and who collaborate with
me. While I work on this initiative, I anticipate that numerous Wikimedia
affiliates and program leaders will continue to develop and refine a
variety of training materials, some of which will be funded by WMF,
affiliates, and/or other organizations. I hope to collaborate with others,
incrementally and over the course of years, to improve the quality and
diversity of training throughout the Wikimedia ecosystem.
I believe that WMF is planning to launch the 2018 Community Engagement
Insights survey in March, and to publish results in May. [3] The CEI survey
results from 2017 and 2018 are likely to influence plans for development of
training materials, although the survey that is focused on training will be
separate from the 2018 CEI survey. I plan to collaborate with WMF Community
Resources and WMF Learning and Evaluation *if* they have availability and
willingness to participate in the design and analysis of the training
survey. :)
Further updates about the training survey will be provided during the next
few months. In the meantime, you are welcome to contact me with questions
or comments through email, IRC, or on my Meta talk page, especially if you
would like to help with the design of the survey.

Dear Wikipedia+Education Enthusiasts,
Are you still recovering from the end-of-year break and accumulated
workload? Worry not! We have a short newsletter for you this month:
https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/Newsletter/January_2018
And it starts with something you (and i) have probably never had thought
of: a video of recited poetry that explains math concepts, in Euskara (the
language of the Basque country).
With that inspiration, go ahead and read news from Sweden, Africa (through
WikiFundi regional project), and the celebration of 10 years of education
program in Serbia!
"But i want data", you say? The Education Survey Report is there for you!
Also in the news: It's high time to say good-bye to the Education
extension. Fear not, the Dashboard is here to help you!
Here is to a great 2018!
Vahid.

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] What's happening with #1Lib1Ref? (A lot...)
Each year the Wikipedia Library team, in collaboration with GLAM folks
(Galleries, Libraries, Archives & Museums) all around the world, asks a
simple favor: Give Wikipedia the gift of a citation for its birthday.
Website:
http://1lib1ref.org
This year Wikipedia turns 17 and it's our third annual #1Lib1Ref campaign.
The 20-day campaign is now in its second week... What's happened so far?
Across the languages we are tracking, editors have added 2097 citations in
21+ languages.
5 languages have made over 100 edits: English, French, Hebrew, Serbian and
Catalan.
View contributions by language:
https://twitter.com/WikiLibrary/status/955590632545726464
On social media #1Lib1Ref is a hype-machine. 37 countries have made 2260
Twitter posts reaching 4.4 million potential readers 8.1 million times.
We invited librarians (and library-lovers) around the world to participate.
Our
Wikimedia Blog post, written by #1Lib1Ref originator and GLAM Strategist
Alex Stinson, set the tone and made the case:
Read blog:
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2018/01/16/1lib1ref-2018/
The blog included a visual 'explainer' video created by Wikipedia Library
team member Felix Nartey, narrated by famous U.S. Librarian Jessamyn West.

We promoted the Story of #1lib1ref on social media using an 8-part
TweetStorm:

Also we redesigned a simple new graphic and logo for the campaign:

Each year #1Lib1Ref grows and brings in more people from libraries, and
more people who believe that Wikipedia and librarians share a mission which
benefits from collaboration. It's an exciting part of our work and we're
very thankful to everyone who adds to its impact and success!
Join in. Make an edit. Teach someone how to add a citation. Share something
nice about the campaign this week in your social media circles. Help share
free knowledge. #1Lib1Ref. Pass it on...

Creating AI Conversations Panel Series: Children and AI
Wednesday JANUARY 31, 2018, 4:15pm-6:00pm
CERAS 101, Stanford University
Free & Open to the Public As Space Permits
Conversational Artificial Intelligence (AI) personalities are playing
an increasing role in our everyday lives. In addition to our personal
assistants, industries such as education, healthcare, hospitality,
transportation, and law are using AI to varying degrees. As
conversational AI becomes integrated in our society, we need to give
serious thought to mindfully creating these personalities and
conversations. These are personalities that are not only going to be
keeping us company and helping to make our daily lives easier, but
coaching us into changing our behavior, helping us navigate the world,
and teaching our children.
Creating AI Conversations is a series of panel discussions that will
delve into the thinking, research, and process around crafting the
personalities, conversations, and interactions of AI entities with
people. Five panel sessions will take place in January and February
from 4:15pm-6:00pm pm in CERAS 101.

Subject: [Wiki-research-l] OpenSym 2018 | August 22-24, 2018 | Paris,
France | General Call for Papers | Deadline March 15, 2018
To: Research into Wikimedia content and communities <
wiki-research-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear all,
it's my pleasure to inform you that the call for paper for OpenSym 2018 is
available.
Conference Website and call for papers: http://opensym.org
Papers are due by March 15, 23h59 (any time on Earth).
Submission: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=opensym2018
(accepted rate in 2017: 45%)
Topics: The conference provides peer-reviewed research tracks on subjects
related to open collaboration including:
- Open Collaboration Research, esp. Wikis and Social Media
- Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS)
- Open Data, Open Access, and Open Science
- Open Education
- IT-Driven Open Innovation
- Open Policy/Open Government/Open Law
- Wikipedia and Wikimedia Research
Looking forward to seeing your paper's presentation in Paris
Nicolas Jullien, general chair of OpenSym 2018
About the Conference
--------------------
OpenSym is the only conference that brings together the different strands
of open collaboration research and practice, seeking to create synergies
and inspire new collaborations between people from computer science,
information science, social science, humanities, and everyone interested in
understanding open collaboration and how it is changing our society.
This year’s conference will be held in Paris, France on August 22-24,
2018. A Doctoral Symposium will take place on August 21, 2018.
OpenSym is held in-cooperation with ACM SIGWEB and ACM SIGSOFT and the
conference proceedings will be archived in the ACM digital library like all
prior editions.
Submission Information and Instructions
---------------------------------------
Topics: The conference provides peer-reviewed research tracks on subjects
related to open collaboration including:
- Open Collaboration Research, esp. Wikis and Social Media
- Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS)
- Open Data, Open Access, and Open Science
- Open Education
- IT-Driven Open Innovation
- Open Policy/Open Government/Open Law
- Wikipedia and Wikimedia Research
Paper Presentation: OpenSym 2018 will be organized as a one track
conference in order to emphasize the interdisciplinary character of this
conference and to encourage discussion.
Submission Deadline: The research paper submission deadline is March 15th
2018. Submitted papers should present integrative reviews or original
reports of substantive new work: theoretical, empirical, and/or in the
design, development and/or deployment of novel concepts, systems, and
mechanisms. Research papers will be reviewed to meet rigorous academic
standards of publication. Papers will be reviewed for relevance, conceptual
quality, innovation and clarity of presentation.
All the submissions are done via the EasyChair platform, here:
https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=opensym2018
Paper Length: There is no minimum or maximum length for submitted papers.
Rather, reviewers will be instructed to weigh the contribution of a paper
relative to its length. Papers should report research thoroughly but
succinctly: brevity is a virtue. A typical length of a “long research
paper” is 10 pages (formerly the maximum length limit and the limit on
OpenSym tracks), but may be shorter if the contribution can be described
and supported in fewer pages—shorter, more focused papers (called “short
research papers” previously) are encouraged and will be reviewed like any
other paper. While we will review papers longer than 10 pages, the
contribution must warrant the extra length. Reviewers will be instructed to
reject papers whose length is incommensurate with the size of their
contribution. Papers should be formatted in ACM SIGCHI paper format.
Reviewing is not double-blind so manuscripts do not need to be anonymized.
Posters: As in previous years, OpenSym will also be hosting a poster
session at the conference. To propose a poster, authors should submit an
extended abstract (not more than 4 pages) describing the content of the
poster which will be published in a non-archival companion proceedings to
the conference. Posters should use the ACM SIGCHI templates for extended
abstracts. An example of a poster abstract can be found here. Reviewing is
not double-blind so abstracts do not need to be anonymized.
Paper Proceedings: OpenSym is held in-cooperation with ACM SIGWEB and ACM
SIGSOFT and the conference proceedings will be archived in the ACM digital
library like all prior editions. OpenSym seeks to accommodate the needs of
the different research disciplines it draws on including disciplines with
archival conference proceedings and disciplines where authors usually
present at conferences and publish later. Authors, whose submitted papers
have been accepted for presentation at the conference have a choice of:
having their paper become part of the official proceedings, archived in the
ACM Digital Library,
having their paper published in the conference website only, with no
transfer of copyright from the authors,
having no publication record at all but only the presentation at the
conference.
Response from authors: For the second time at OpenSym, authors will be
given the opportunity to write a response to their reviews before final
decisions are made. This should be treated as an opportunity to correct any
mistakes or misconceptions in the reviews as well as to propose minor
changes that the authors can make during the two weeks between notification
and the camera-ready deadline.
Important Dates
Submission deadline: March 15, 2018
Reviews sent to authors: May 11, 2018
Response to reviews from authors due: May 20, 2018
Final decision notification: June 15, 2018
Camera-ready papers due: June 22, 2018
Papers available online: July 13, 2018
Conference Organization
The general chairs of the conference are Nicolas Jullien and Olivier
Berger, IMT, France. Feel free to contact us with any questions you might
have at info(a)opensym.org.

The Education team is happy to announce the release of the report, “Does
Wikipedia Belong in Education?,”
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Education_Program_Survey_Report_Web…>
a survey report on the Wikipedia Education Program
<https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education>.
In September and October 2017, we surveyed stakeholders in the Wikipedia
Education Program to get their perception of the program as a
whole—including where we were succeeding, and where we could do with some
improvement. More than 200 people completed it in 10 different languages.
In addition to the survey, the Education team conducted interviews with
Wikimedia affiliates that helped to qualify the survey data. We wanted to
find out what people think we are doing, what they think we should do,
whether they value Wikimedia projects being used in education, and what
they think of our current communications materials and resources.
The full report can be found on Wikimedia Commons
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Education_Program_Survey_Report_Web…>.
A Wiki version on our Outreach Portal <http://education.wikimedia.org> is
forthcoming.
Happy reading!

Calling all Program leaders!
You may have seen that we updated the case studies page on Outreach Wiki.
We got a few good submissions, and we greatly appreciate those who took the
time to submit their Case Studies during this initial campaign! [1]
We want to showcase and highlight the great work that is going on around
the world in GLAM, Education, and other programs. For that reason, we have
decided to extend the case studies collection period, and will be providing
additional opportunities to work on case studies together!
Additionally, at Wikimedia Conference, Wikimania and other regional
conferences, we will be holding clinics to help you draft your case study.
We will also hold several virtual clinics where Wikimedia Foundation
Programs staff can give you feedback and support on developing your own
case studies (keep your eye out for invitations for these workshops!).
If you thought you might want to submit a case study, but haven’t done so
yet: please let us know that you are interested by responding to this email!
We can support you in drafting or developing the case study using the case
study templates on outreach.[2] If you would like to share a case study you
have already drafted, you can still do so through the input boxes on the
same page.
Remember case studies can be submitted in English or local languages.
Thank you again for participating in this important initiative. We look
forward to seeing you at the upcoming case study clinics!
Sincerely,
The WMF Programs Team
