Dear EDUWiki enthusiasts,
We've just wrapped 2018 and heading toward 2019, about which I'll be
sending a separate email in the coming week, with information about what
we've been up to till now and most importantly, what we're planning next.
In the meantime, however, *we'd like to schedule our next open online
meeting. *
To that end, we've *created a doodle*
<https://doodle.com/poll/id2bmreyqsf7gvh2>, with 3 different options on the
last week of January.
As we are an international group, we've tried to pick different time-slots
during the day.
*Please fill it out by the end of this Friday, 25/01/19, at midnight
*(whichever
time zone you are in). It's important for us to see how many people are
able to participate in the different time slots, as it'll also affect our
future scheduling as well. The final date will be announced Saturday, Jan
26.
The meeting will include:
* A short update (and intro) by participants.
* A short update regarding what we've achieved during 2018.
* A short update on our annual plan & bylaws
* An invitation to the working groups (explanation and call of action)
Yours,
Shani Evenstein

Subject: [Wikimedia-GH] Sign Freedom of Panorama Petition for Ghana
(re:publica Accra call for action)
To: Planning Wikimedia Ghana Chapter <wikimedia-gh(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hello everyone,
It is a fact that for many African countries especially, a common
thing like a selfie with a national statue can be copyright infringement.
For some time now Wikimedia Ghana UG <https://wmghug.wordpress.com/>has
been learning what it needs to do to have Freedom of Panorama introduced in
Ghana.
Today we are happy to announce that following a session
<https://accra18.re-publica.com/en/session/freedom-panorama-why-free-knowled…>
on Freedom of Panorama with Douglas Scott of Wikipedia ZA at re:publica Accra
conference <https://accra18.re-publica.com/en>, we have put up a petition
on change.org for the President of Ghana to put his weight behind this.
Before you sign the petition you'll need to know this:
*Problem:*
Ghana's Copyright Act of 2003, Act 690 at the moment restricts Freedom of
Panorama.
Because of the restriction of Freedom of Panorama taking a photo or video,
or creating images or copies of monuments, buildings, sculptures and other
permanently public artwork including those belonging to the state could be
a crime.
*Our Request *
We are petitioning his excellency and our minister for the arts to have
Parliament revisit our Copyright Act of 2003, Act 690 and grant Freedom of
Panorama.
*About Fair Dealing In Ghana*
We have put a preamble to our FOP research as adviced by a lawyer here
<http://bit.ly/FOPPreamble> to explain the status quo in Ghana.
*Why the president?*
Though it is Ghana's Parliament that would amend the act, the lawyer and
the presidential staffer who is our liaison has recommended we channel this
through the presidency instead.
The Chief of Staff is ready to receive this on the president's behalf
Sign the petition here
<https://www.change.org/p/h-e-nana-akufo-addo-please-introduce-freedom-of-pa…>
.
And while you are there, if you have questions, suggestions, concerns, even
typos to report, I'll gladly handle them before we print it out for
delivery.

Do you organize wiki events? Would you like to have a convenient tool that provides metrics about the impact of your events? Then you are a potential user of Event Metrics [1], a new tool under development. I’m writing now to find event organizes who can help us test the usability of this new metrics program, to make sure people such as yourself can understand and easily use its functions.
The test will involve a videoconference session with a design researcher, who will lead you through a series of tasks on the program and talk to you about how well the tool's user interface works for you and how it could be improved. Sessions will take place the second and third weeks of January.
If you’d like to help out, please email Daisy Chen, dchen(a)wikimedia.org <mailto:dchen@wikimedia.org>, and let her know:
* The email address where you prefer to be reached.
* Your time zone
* General times when you prefer to meet (evenings, mornings, etc.)
Daisy will follow up to schedule a time. Thanks for helping to make Event Metrics a tool that event organizers will find easy and empowering!

Dear Education community,
It's almost 2019! It's been an exciting year for education in the Wikimedia
movement. There were a lot of great stories shared in the Newsletter
<https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/News>. We got a new logo,
and we're about to get a new, more user friendly and engaging design for
Education on Outreach (coming in Jan 2019!). We added Melissa and Sailesh
to the education team. The User Group was approved, elected a board, and
had its first meeting. What a year!
As we prepare for the new year, here are just a few things to keep in mind:
- The Dec and Jan issue of the newsletter will be published on *Jan 21*.
Deadlines for submissions are *Jan 15th*.
- The Education Team (and all WMF) will be on holidays from Dec 24-Jan
2.
- We'll communicate the January office hours dates and times the first
week in January.
We wish you the best for the rest of 2018, and look forward to catching up
with you in 2019!
