Hi
Whilst I was looking for images of kids playing with an encyclopedia (...), I found this site
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://solar-center.stanford.edu/imag...
What striked me is the subtitle of this site
Kids.Net.Au - kids safe search engine for children, parents and teachers.
I love the idea of a kid safe search engine for children using primarily wikipedia :-)
Now, review and compare
http://encyclopedia.kids.net.au/page/ma/Masturbation
and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masturbation
That's the spirit !!!

Our scholarly treatment of the word [[fuck]] is unparalleled.

It's actually just a very out of date mirror of Wikipedia (July 2003 according to their [[current events]] page). They don't appear to have changed anything to make it "child-friendly".

They removed [[snowballing]] after enough people laughed at it that someone told them.

Now it's time to make fun of [[rimming]] on there. :)

I am so disappointed :-(
There are differences, some of them relevant. AU didn't include the pictures, neither the general or the specialized. AU didn't include the references or the outside sites. AU didn't include much about the religious attitudes, especially the Islamic. . WP has a section of links labeled OPPOSITION.
There are a number of relevant topics not included in WP (or at least not in this article), and perhaps this will inspire me to add them.
Considering that "masturbation" is one of the words likely to be blocked by filters, it is good to have this information in a reasonably reliable and accessible source. --but there's a technical question: the link even within WP is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masturbation. Possibly this would cause some filters to not accept the page. I found that neither of my browsers could be set to enable parental controls, so I couldn't test it.

I think you meant "kids.net.au", not my country as a whole...

Having shorter, instructional texts about sexual behavior that are written specifically for adolescents would actually be a good thing. But that is perhaps something for Wikibooks/Wikijunior to work on. Sex ed is not something we should stay away from because it could ruffle some feathers. It is in fact (referring to broader sexual practices) critically important in areas where AIDS is widespread and sexual activity among teens is common. Well-illustrated free content safe sex guides in all languages could make a real difference.
As for masturbation, it's of course exactly the kind of thing you should learn when you're still young. ;-)

This is a *fantastic* idea, something I'd really be interested in participating in. Surely such a guide would be aimed at pre-adolescents (10ish)?
