I was thinking about another possible portal arrangement, that based on language family, giving the Latin, French, Spanish, etc. languages a grouping, the Germanic languages, and so forth. Perhaps not for the main portal, but rather on the article for Latin or Romance-languages, we could add a language tree with links to the daughter language wikipedias. Same with an article on proto-Germanic.

Most people know very little about the origins of languages. Only a linguist would want to see them sorted like that.
I disagree.
Almost everybody I know knows that Spanish is a Romance language, and not because I told them. Did they know Burmese is a Tibeto-Burman language which is a subfamily of Sino-Tibetan? Probably not.
Also, not even a LINGUIST would /want/ to see them organised like that. Even if you know the groupings, it's much less intuitive.
