Hi, my name is Rexford
I wish to find out why wikipedia allows only 6 account creation from a network sharing the same IP address.
I never knew something like that existed.
I'm currently doing a Wikipedia training session and many will like to create accounts on Wikipedia but we're being blocked.
Any reasons? How to bypass that?

Hi Rexford,
I'm not sure what the original reasoning was behind choosing 6 as the specific number of accounts for the per IP limit, but it exists to stop the creation of multiple spam/sockpuppet accounts from one IP.
There's a process you can follow for events if you know in advance the IP that you're going to be using, see https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mass_account_creation. However, given that you're currently doing the training session, I'm happy to give you the account creator user right for your own account so that you can bypass the limit by creating new accounts whilst logged into your account by going to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:UserLogin/signup whilst logged in, filling out details except the password field and clicking the "By e-mail" button.
Let me know if this is okay (please email me directly) and I'll do it now.

I used to hit the same problem, and was given the "account creator" flag, so I can set up more than six accounts during a session. I think any admin can do this for you, if you're in good standing.
But that slows down the session, so I only use it as a fall-back; what I usually do now is ask participants to set up accounts, in advance of training sessions.
The wording I use, which you're welcome to copy or adapt, is:
Sign up at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UserLogin for a Wikipedia account; when given the option, please give an email address (it's always hidden, and you can turn off the ability for people to send you messages; but giving an address means you can recover lost passwords).the account name may be pseudonymous, but is personal to the individual, so not "Anytown Library" or suchlike.

Well, I never knew that.
@TheHelpfulOne, the session is just ended. However, now I know there's something like that, I'll ask beforehand for that privilege so we're able to create more accounts.
thanks. :)

Where did you look for information before organising it? I'd like to know where this piece of information about rate limits should be placed, because looks like organisers without a chapter always have this problem, although it's supposedly very well documented on Meta, outreachwiki, mediawiki.org...

Rexford: yes, this is very frustrating when doing an event!! I have had that problem too. As a workaround, any admin can create accounts. You can leave a request at WP:AN and probably get a quick response. (I'm not at a computer, or I would offer to do it!) Good luck!

thanks Pete.
Administrator? Can I become one myself, so I wouldn't have to ask for such privileges in instances like that? Or its not allowed?

Nobody answered you in a month because the answer is "if you have to ask you're not ready for becoming one yet, sorry". ;-)
