Regarding Wikipedia's need for a new server: I spoke with my boss to see if my employer would be willing to make a donation. He agreed to let me donate one of our older PCs for Wikipedia:
Dell Optiplex GX100 Celeron 433 mhz 20-gig Maxtor hard drive 64M RAM Windows 98 SE
Of course, you can install Red Hat in its place, and upgrade the RAM and hard drive as needed.
If you give the okay, I can ship it to your address ASAP.
I hope this helps.
You could send this to wikitech-l, but really a machine like this is going to be way too slow and weak to really help us very much, and our space in the colocation facility is really configured primarily to handle rackmount servers, which are very dense (small).
What would help more would be money to help us reach the $6000 goal for the Opteron/Xeon/IA64 server. Even small contributions are very much appreciated!
Hi Jimbo, has there been any talk of writing grant applications? I've done some grant writing for the school districts I work in and it proved quite productive... e.g. we now can enjoy new computer labs as a result... is there someone looking into grants for non profit projects? w/ regards, Jay B.
