Alternatively - since the old versions appear to be saved at the system anyway, what about creating a 'restore' function on the Deletion log?
If I go do that right now, will everyone SHUT THE FARDELS UP? :)

Would it be possible to simply view what was contained in the page without restoring it?

If there is a "view" button next to each deletion on the log page that pulls up the page, including its history, as if it were still alive, then this would have all of the functionality of a soft delete (for the purposes of The Cunctator's party), yet be less transparent, so that naive readers are all the less likely to accidentally stumble across material that was deleted for (usually, at least) a good reason.
Something like [[Special:Restorepage&title=...×tamp=...]] (the latter parameter in case of multiple deletions of the same page). If you view this page while logged in as a sysop, then it'd be really cool to replace the "Delete this page" link with an "Undelete this page" link. So pretty ^_^.
As for flowers, give me an address and a favorite colour.

I already explained how to do that via an SQL query*, but yes, that will be possible in the interface too. I'll try to have it ready and online sometime tonightish.
