Well I do this whenever I was the only one who edited the /Temp page but whenever other people contributed to the /Temp page then I go through the hackish process to merge the /Temp edit history with the parent page's edit history.
It would /really/ be nice to have a "combine page histories" option for Admins.
Just dreaming...

Another way would be to _rename_ the 'live' page to the /Temp page to work on it, and leave a protected copy in place at the old name. Then when the updates are done, rename it back in place with all history intact.

I'm reluctant to do such as there's presently no way to extricate the combined histories if one makes a mistake (or, hypothetically, a rogue sysop goes on a rampage) short of checking backup archives and manually reassigning the entries.

OTOH, it's much more *likely* for somebody to make a mistake using the current hackish process than through a programmed procedure. That is, having only the hackish process makes this happen less often, but it makes each given instance more prone to error.
I'm going to make a specific request to SourceForge:
"Have a method for administrators to combine edit histories. "Also have a method to separate out histories to undo mistakes. "Better yet, make undoing each of these processes easy enough "that it'll be safe to allow any user to do them.
But we should discuss here how (or if) we want such a process to work, and on <wikitech-l> how (or if) such a process could be built.
