Indeed they are. In the November 13, 1950 issue of Life magazine, pages 130-136, 138, 141, in the article "This Was the Perilous Trek to Tragedy" by Frank Bessac, the story is told of a criminal sentence handed down in Tibet in 1950 which called for amputation of the perpetrator's "noses and ears" which was reduced to a public flogging of 200 lashes which sentence was carried out in Lhasa. The cover of Life pictures the flogging.
