Right?) I don't see that as an unreasonable barrier. As for
"unnecessary" -- well, the project hasn't fallen apart thus far
without, but there are a lot of unnecessary things that are still a
win.
IIRC having a confirmed email address will prove to be highly useful when
the single login approaches, as some sort of proof that the same person owns
the various accounts to which they might lay claim.
So we ought to be promoting this in any case...
