One of the big problems with checking and tagging
images is that we
often cannot contact the uploaders -- they register an account, maybe
only to upload, and then they never log in again, never check their
talk page, didn't provide an email address, and you have no way to
contact them.
I would support this measure for wikis which permit fair use (such as
en.wp), and oppose it for Commons. As [[en:Wikipedia:Fair use]]
explains, tracking down the sources of fair use uploads is good
practice -- it strengthens our own position, and makes it easier for
third parties to decide whether fair use applies to them. Having
e-mail addresses on file would help with that.
Interesting. Oppose it for Commons? If anything images that are
*claimed* fair use are easier to manage, I think... we already know it
is copyrighted to someone else, and if it's being used under fair use
it ought to be a notable image and therefore reasonably easy to
find/source.
It's the ones that look like they might be self-created but we can't
verify that are more of a headache, I think. We want to assume good
faith, yes, but there are so many that are actually bogus.
Given that there's currently not central user
database, having to
confirm an e-mail address again for Commons strikes me as an
unnecessary barrier to entry, particularly since our practice is
generally to simply delete files without a clear source.
I've seen plenty of dubious images on commons I would really like to
have been able to get a good answer about.
So it's two email addresses that would need to be confirmed... until
single user login is implemented. (This is really coming, right?
Right?) I don't see that as an unreasonable barrier. As for
"unnecessary" -- well, the project hasn't fallen apart thus far
without, but there are a lot of unnecessary things that are still a
win.
On Commons,
I'd rather wish for special processes to educate new users about the
meaning of "free content" (see the discussion on commons-l about a
licensing tutorial as a mandatory sign-up step).
I like that idea too. :-)
