Me for example wouldn't mind if I see some ads if I know that this increases

I know I am opening Pandora's box, but if we need some constant revenue stream
then this is something we should at least think about. As long as there is an
easy way to remove ads, e.g. logged in users can switch ads off (or on) by
changing their preference entries, I would found it an acceptable solution.
After the last time ads were even *suggested* led to a fork from es and a pile
of contributors up and leaving for the fork, I suggest this idea is unlikely
to fly.
