Okay, this debate has gotten very abstract, and no one

Current en practice is to simply place a note in the "edit summary"
field, to the effect of "this material copied from [[foo]]."
1) Does anyone object to me codifying this practice in the documentation?
2) If so, what other practice should I recommend instead?

The best way to see if anyone objects to you codifying the practice in
the documentation would be...to codify the practice in the
documentation.
But anyway, if you want to state in the docs that this is what people
do, that's fine. If you want to say that it's a good idea to place
such a note in the edit summary, that's a good idea too. But if you
want to say that doing so satisfies the requirements of the GFDL,
well, that would be adding lies to the documentation.
