May I assume that your surname is Italian? In that case, I feel I must
correct you. The g is not "gone" (by which I assume you mean "silent",
i.e. not pronounced); rather, the letter combination "gl" stands for a
distinct sound (similar to how "sh" in English stands for a sound that
is different from both "s" and "h"). Unfortunately, the "gl"
sound does
not occur in English (or indeed many other European languages), and to
most people it just sounds like an l.
