Here are some of my crazy ideas of how File storage could be handled thought
out our farm of wikis, although I know they will probably never get used I
though some other people might like to look at them. From here on in, NFC
is used to describe "Non Free Content".
1. No local images on wiki's at all
Don't store any Files locally on any wiki's except for the ones described
below, except for a few special exceptions such as as the wiki logo.
=> This would reduce naming conflicts (Local over Foreign Files).
2. NFC Sharing Wiki's
Have NFC wikis, these will operate similar to how commons operate
currently but the sub domains will only be available to that language wiki's
that allow fair use (for example: en.nfc will only be available to en wikis)
=> These would still require FUR's to be added.
=> Reduce duplicates of the same file across multiple languages.
=> Easier to find images.
3. Image upload dumping ground
(Needs point 4 first to be ideal)
Instead of uploading locally to either NFC or Commons you upload to a central
dumping ground which will allow the images basically still to be used but
then they can be reviewed and transferred to the appropriate wikis
(NFC/Commons).
=> Central location to screen new files.
=> License reviewing/checking to make sure they are correct.
=> Easily clean/update the Files description/categories before they are
transferred.
4. Wiki Farm Improvements
(a) Use Detection
Currently when you view a file on it's "Local" wiki and its used on other
systems (Fore example: Files from commons) it will not display the files
use when they are being on other wiki's.
(b) Moving between farms
Have a system similar to how the page moving button operates, where you are
presented with a form where you can enter to destination location and a
reason and it will move the file with full history (and ect) to the
destination with a minimal of fuss.
