There's been for several weeks a request to run CommonsDelinker on all
wikies, exempted from local bot policies.
As a second step after the CommonsTicker, it would go through the wikis to
remove the redlinks produced by deleted images which are not properly
removed. The object is avoiding commons admins to do the cleaning on the
+700 wikis.
Communities may give it or not the bot flag, as they want to have it shown
or not. They can also reject it, but then it's up to them doing the
delinking.
Until now it has got strong support. If it isn't known in your wiki, you
should probably inform them. No explicit notify will give them
CommonsDelinker by default.

It is not an official notice from the Foundation though, since it
would affect the project globally, I think it is highly recommended to
inform each community. I invite you interested translators to bring
the news below to your favorite language community.
Cheers,

This is a theme I always wanted to take up ... so now I wrote what I
think on my blog and I would like to know your thoughts.
-------- Original message --------
This is one of these questions. When it comes to wikipedia
<http://wikipedia.org> many people immediately think about long articles
about each topic. Considering the multitude of encyclopaedias you can
find in a book shop one thing is obvious: entries can range from one
sentence to full pages.
Now people often complain that the encyclopaedias of regional language's
wikipedias do have many stubs and just some long articles - well: I
would compare these to the kind of encyclopaedias that give you basic
information on many topics in just one or two volumes. I would not
compare them to the big ones like Britannica, Brockhaus etc.
Of course over time you will find single articles that get longer,
others will remain short for a long time, but ... well ... does it
really matter? I'd say no - because Wikipedia is not in concurrence with
anyone to my opinion - people put us into a concurrence position, but we
are not, because the way each language version is built and works is so
unique.
Fact is: one can only write about what he/she knows or translate ...
well being a professional translator I really avoid to translate also in
my free-time if I don't have to. Not having much time to contribute I
normally care about the almanac + some stubs related to the almanac ...
much more is not possible (see the main page
<http://nap.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paggena_prencepale> of the Neapolitan
wikipdia for the historical events I normally work on). Another thing I
of course care about is notions on the city I live in
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maiori> and that in various languages.
Everyone of us editors have something particular they care about ... and
I believe that is great - and it is exactly what wikipedia is about:
collecting the knowledge of everybody and put it into one huge
encyclopaedia.

Some time ago I wrote a tool to facilitate the spread of images on
wikipedia (which is mostly a good thing). However, it was very slow
and not very user-friendly.
Finally, I got around to rewrite it from scratch (something we're all
good at;-) and now call it V2.0:
http://tools.wikimedia.de/~magnus/missing_images.php
Basically, it scans through a set of random articles, or articles from
a category, and checks if they have images. If they don't, it tries to
locate images in the matching wikipedia articles in other languages.
It also checks on their license status, and wether they're already on
commons. If not, copying them to commons is assisted by my
commonshelper tool.
If you find the tool mistakes some icon from a navigational element
for an image, please add the icon name to
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Missing_images_tool/Ignored_images
Also, feature suggestions and bug reports are always welcome.
Thanks,
Magnus
What happened to test.wikipedia.org? When? Why? Thanks.

Hi,
today I was informed that the German subsidiary of AFP (Agence France
Presse), a news agency seems to have taken a significant amount of
text about the Amish from de.wikipedia.org.
In a phone call, the AFP office confirmed that the text was from
Wikipedia and stated that this was against "AFP policy" because
"wikipedia is not a citable source". They refuse to retract or ammend
the story with proper attribution for Wikipedia and the license.
On the other hand, AFP sued Google News in 2005 because in AFP's point
of view, Google was violating their copyright.
A short report about this event from today can be found (in German) at
http://mathias-schindler.de/index.php/2006/10/03/einladung-zum-textvergleic….
I will update or correct anything there. Feel free to translate the
text or refer to it.

Gileki wikipedia have many supporters that want topromote it. We need a provider to develop it. Also does any committe or something like that have to approve it first?

I appreciate your help.It is over a month that I am sending these kind of emails around.

Do you Yahoo!?
Everyone is raving about the all-new Yahoo! Mail.
Can anyone think how to rephrase this better? Would it actually get
through to anyone who needs to hear it?
(I eagerly await all the people saying I should read what I wrote.)

Cultural expectations
These are the things we do that aren't actually codified. The feel of
the project. The social structure. This stuff is process too, but if
you contradict it you'll really upset people. Breaking a rule is just
breaking a rule; but breaking a cultural expectation is breaking
people's basic assumptions about the fabric of this small world of
ours. And upset volunteers fade away.
If you think you're keeping to the fundamental rules and the sensible
processes but repeatedly upset people in the same way, your approach
is ineffective. If you are in fact right, and cultural expectations
are getting in the way of writing the encyclopedia, you've got a hard
job ahead of you changing them. But that's the trouble with vision.

Good morning!
At the beginning I was really hesitant to propose this project on these
lists - for the simple fact that it could be seen negatively by some,
but: it is for a good cause, it is Open Content and it is about a
Wiktionary, even if a very particular one.
WiktionaryZ is building the contents for a multilingual dictionary for
all children in the world - all languages are welcome and that's why
this message does not only go to the wiktionary list, but also to
others. Not all projects have wiktionaries and maybe this could be also
their first start into lexicology for their very specific language.
I would like to remind you that the data you provide can be re-used by
your local wiktionary, also uploading it whith the bot, once we have the
dump to be provided to OLPC.
Please find below the original text re. the co-operation. To
participate, please create yourself a profile on http://wiktionaryz.org,
add your babel template and read about the DefinedMeaning
(http://www.wiktionaryz.org/DefinedMeaning). Then tell us or on the wiki
or in the chat ( irc://irc.freenode.net/wiktionaryz or
irc://irc.freenode.net/wiktionary ) we are present in both of them.
If you happen to be in a university or in another adeguate place and
have the possibility to put a print-out of the project description on
the notice board, please send me a short-mail I will happily send you
the pdf. Doing this results in better co-operation with all projects,
since people, who maybe did not consider wikis before do their first
edits. The reason why we ask people to send us an e-mail if they are
interested in contributing is simple: we want to take them by the hand
and show them how to do things. Working on a wiki is not so obvious and
simple as it might seem to us who do it every day.
I will also try to go around the village pumps of the projects to post
the message - of course: you may help me with that - it would be great
:-) I am going to update the project page in English during the day:
http://www.wiktionaryz.org/OLPC_Children%27s_Dictionary - if you have
put the message on your wiki, could you pleas leave a short note on the
discussion page for the project?
Thank you so much for your time and attention and have a wonderful
wiki-day :-)
Sabine

Hello
I am currently reading the Terms of Service of Myspace. It is quite
interesting. Remember, this is a social networking site, not an
encyclopedia/dictionary/textbook/library/etc. As such, one would think that they would be a tad
more lax than us. Not so. Note that I not suggesting that these policies are
followed or that the millions of Myspace users have actually read them.
Nevertheless, it is there in writing. People who sign up agree to this. Perhaps we
can learn from them.
Rule 5:
Non-commercial Use by Members. The MySpace Services are for the personal use
of Members only and may not be used in connection with any commercial
endeavors except those that are specifically endorsed or approved by MySpace.com.
Illegal and/or unauthorized use of the MySpace Services, including collecting
usernames and/or email addresses of Members by electronic or other means for
the purpose of sending unsolicited email or unauthorized framing of or
linking to the MySpace Website is prohibited. Commercial advertisements, affiliate
links, and other forms of solicitation may be removed from Member profiles
without notice and may result in termination of Membership privileges.
Appropriate legal action will be taken for any illegal or unauthorized use of the
MySpace Services.
Forbidden thing 11 is:
displaying an advertisement on your profile, or accepting payment or
anything of value from a third person in exchange for your performing any commercial
activity on or through the MySpace Services on behalf of that person, such
as placing commercial content on your profile, posting blogs or bulletins with
a commercial purpose, selecting a profile with a commercial purpose as one
of your "Top 8" friends, or sending private messages with a commercial
purpose;
As I said, I sincerely doubt most (any) Myspace members have read the Terms
of Service, I can assure you that they are far more substantial than our own
Terms of Service. Personally, I hope that the Board rectifies this.
