It sure would be a fun ride to see how far we could go before having to submit to the dark side of
the force. :)
LUKE: ... Is the dark side stronger?
YODA: No...no...no. Quicker, easier, more seductive it is.

Having ads would have many benefits and drawbacks that need to be explored *WELL before* events
force us into exploring that option. Having ads would enable us to much more easily support the
websites and further our charitable goals but, we may, if we are not careful, lose our soul in the
process; Not to mention much of the community and good will we have generated.
A financial crisis would present us with both danger and opportunity concerning ads. The subject
of ads on Wikipedia has been taboo for so long that I fear we won't be able to correctly deal with
such a crisis since we never have considered the issue closely enough.
So we should open a dialog to discuss the pros and cons along with exploring the best way to
mitigate bad vs ill effects of having ads. One idea I like is for us to set-up nupedia.org as a
mirror with ads that would host stable versions of Wikipedia content. All excess revenue from that
venture would benefit all the ad-free wiki sites and the foundation.

Hi!
Someone has quite agressively threatened to ask to lock Võro Wiki beacause of its low activity in last months, see
http://fiu-vro.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:V%C3%B5rok#Lock_the_wiki.3F
I hope people concerned with Wikipedia projects understand that small languages' wikis can not be very active all the time. We just
have better and not so good times. I think 134 articles in first half hear is not too bad for a small regional language wiki.
With best wishes,

Hi everyone.
We at the Cebuano Wikipedia community beat our
self-imposed deadline of 31 December 2005 for the
1,000th article of the Cebuano Wikipedia. See
[[ceb:Special:Statistics]].
30 December 2005, 05:10 UTC, the 1,000th article was
created (appropriately for the man who is known in the
Cebuano community as THE hero -- the one who led our
revolutionaries against the Spanish back in 1898). See
[[ceb:Leon Kilat]]. It is more of a stub than of a
"real" article, but hey, MediaWiki counted it as one
;)
Now I can go on vacation. ;)

Hi,
I was quite surprised to see today in the Wikipedia Signpost that
the semi-protection policy had passed and I hadn't even heard
a poll was conducted on it.
I think it's really important that everyone is notified in a much more
organised manner about such important policy chances.
Now, the reason I'm writing here is because of the looming "stable
versions" policy. I think this is a policy that contravenes the principles
of Wikipedia, and I've raised this on the talk page
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Stable_versions)
It would be great if other people could comment on this policy.
Finally, I'd just like to let everyone remember where Wikipedia started.
The factor that's distinguished Wikipedia from basically every other
reference work on Earth has been its *absolutely* open nature.
Anyone can edit it! That's what's worked so well in ensuring such
a dynamic, comprehensive, deep and updated encyclopedia.
About a week ago, something quite signficant happened - anonymous
users were no longer allowed to start new articles. I said back then
that that wasn't such a major move, and it's isn't. However,
let's not let that become a slippery slope for all sorts of new
policies that seek to restrict the freedom, and by extension
the success, of Wikipedia.
At the Romanian Wikipedia, we have some of the most liberal
policies on blocking and vandalism. And, so far, there haven't
been any major problems - no media reports, no huge glaring
errors, etc.
Let's maintain Wikipedia's liberty!
Ronline
The Zhuang Wikipedia (za.wikipedia.org) seems to be overtaken by vandals
completely. I can't say for sure, but it seems if there is no real article at
all. Would be nice if somebody with admin access could clean this up.

It does, but is that a bad thing? The line would still make access to
the editable version pretty clear, plus billing it as "updated" in
comparison to the stable version. And people might well be more
interested in finding out what's going on in "private" than now, when
all they see is a counterintuitive "edit" tab. Anyway, the words to
choose are basically an issue of how to market things to the audience.

Discussion for the creation of a Norman wikipedia has been held and approved
unanimously (10 in favour). A link containing the discussion may be found
here:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Approved_requests_for_new_languages#Norman_.…
Request was originally for the creation of a Jèrriais Wikipedia, but it has
been agreed upon to create a pan-Norman wiki, instead, using Jèrriais as the
de facto standard. There is currently a thriving test-wiki in Norman
(though at least 95% of the articles are in Jèrriais). I am requesting that
the Wikipedia be created at nor.wikipedia.org, or, if there is a problem
with this owing to nor's designation as the ISO code for Norwegian (though
there likely would be no wikipedia conflict; norwegian already has a
2-letter domain code), nrm.wikipedia.org would also work.
Thank you for your time,
Miché-Forêt
