Hello all,
We will be holding an initial meeting to discuss disinformation challenges with folks from across various European-language communities on *Tuesday 21 May at 1700 UTC*.
For those who are interested, please let me know and I can add you to the invite. In attendance on behalf of the Trust & Safety Disinformation team at the Foundation will be myself and my colleague Chmielko Maslak.
Kind regards,
Nathan

Hello Dutch Wikipedia ArbCom,
I am glad to connect with you. My name is Nathan Forrester and I work in the Disinformation Team (part of Trust and Safety) at the Wikimedia Foundation. We are a small team which works with communities to support them through disinformation issues and disinformation investigations. I apologise for writing in English. If any of you feel more comfortable responding in Dutch, please do so. We will do our best to understand your message.
We are emailing you today about a project that we are doing related to the upcoming EU parliamentary elections, taking place from the 6th-9th of June, 2024. The Disinformation Team runs projects around elections that we believe may be at higher risk for disinformation issues, or that may pose risks to the Wikipedia editors who contribute to election-related topics. We call these projects Disinformation Response Taskforces (DRTs).
A DRT involves a group of community members and Wikimedia Foundation Trust and Safety staff meeting to share information and work together on solving issues that arise throughout the election period. This is voluntary and Wikimedians should only volunteer if they feel it may be useful to them and their Wikipedia work.
Generally, the purposes of the taskforce are:
- Increasing information sharing between the Foundation and the European Wikipedia communities; - Connecting members of different European language communities so you can share information/work together around the election; - Learning from the community what are the major disinformation issues and what kinds of support would be helpful - Sharing training materials on disinformation with community members; - Recording any disinformation incidents that occur to learn about election-related disinformation; - Building relationships with community members of Wikipedia who are working on election issues. This can help us to share information between the Foundation and the community from press or external organisations; - The Disinformation Team can liaise with other teams in the Foundation, for example; Communications, Legal or Human Rights teams; - The Disinformation Team can open investigations and potentially intervene in serious cases that the community is struggling to deal with.
As there are many diverse Wikipedia communities in the EU, it might be helpful to gather members of different Wikipedia language communities. This group would give an idea of events across the EU related to the elections. Community members will have a place to work together and learn about election situations in the other communities.
We want to ask if any of you would be interested in joining the taskforce and bringing your knowledge of your wiki community. If you can recommend any other community members who might be interested in working with us on the EU parliamentary elections, please let us know.
This project hopefully would not add too much more work to your normal Wikipedia editing. It will consist of a few regular meetings with the Foundation and community members. There will be communication via email if the community or the Foundation are alerted to issues that the group should know about. You can also share reports with the group of any election-related issues you are encountering during your regular editing.
If you have any concerns about this or around disinformation that is not directly related to the election, you are always welcome to write to the Disinformation Team (drt@wikimedia.org) or to the general Trust and Safety Team (ca@wikimedia.org).
We look forward to hearing any thoughts you may have.
Kind regards,
Nathan

Vriendelijke groet,
Bert Bremer
