Hi all,
A couple of weeks ago I was talking with Lodewikj about the idea of having a configurable Jury Tool that would suit the need of most of the participating countries. While it may seem early to talk about the Jury Tool for countries that are participating for the first time, the countries that are already experienced in the contest can give valuable input about what features should this tool have.
We are already collecting information in this link
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2013/JuryTool
and I would like to get in touch with people that developed jury tools for previous contests so that we can start a discussion about features.
David E. Narvaez
Hi David,
I developed the tool for last year. I would indeed like to develop it further, or even rewrite it from scratch if other developers want to join in. Last year there was a lot of interest in this but the timeline was short and most potential contributors could not promise to stick to a deadline, so it was agreed that this year we would develop the tool together. Now is indeed a good time to start if you have time.
Regarding the features, almost everything on the list at this moment already exists in the existing tool, but there are a bunch of other unfulfilled feature requests that I have. I realize that the lack of documentation or a config GUI don't help users with configuration, for example some of the config can only be done through PHPMyAdmin/other MySQL tool/direct queries.
If you want to start developing this year's tool with more orderly code, a doc, a config GUI, etc., I'll be happy to assist even if it means that my old tool which took a lot of time to write and improve would go out of use—or you can use the existing tool and build it up.
Keep in mind (and I can't emphasize this enough) that it's *not* too early to be developing it now—it's exactly the right time. If we wait till August-ish like last year, I am certain that we won't get much done.
Cheers, —Ynhockey.

I agree it's the right time to develop the tools we want to use (and we should at least plan *what* we want to have in September). I thank David and Ynhockey for bringing this up.
Ynhockey, is jury-2012 in a public repository? That should be the starting point. The code was not published initially and we may have forgotten about it.
It's in JasonDC's Labs project. I don't remember how to get in and have the code, so if anyone wants it I can send you what I have.

Hi,
2013/6/11 Ynhockey ynhockey@gmail.com
I developed the tool for last year.
Which one ? ^_^". I seem to recall several jury tools (but that may be from the year before). A quick description of its name / features / screenshots / of the countries which used it would help :)
This is really appreciated, last year the tool was good but in was developed unfortunately in short time.
How we can add features? It's a simple adding in the list or there is a place to discuss?

The .us website looks to me like the original .org template before it got changed.
Personally I actually prefer the white-and-red skin much more over the current chaotic .org version (I'm just not a big fan of the tile structure chosen there, nor of the color scheme).

The 'tile' theme does have some advantages - more posts can be shown at one time, which is great for featuring the winners in multiple countries. It's also fully responsive, meaning it will render nicely on phones, tablets, and desktops with the same theme. Streamlined commenting is easier for new users, while pictures are up front. To a certain degree, it's a matter of personal taste. Typography is a bit cleaner; in general, it tends to look more professional because it was professionally designed. I personally prefer the new theme as a more modern approach still under a free license.
I can definitely make additional modifications for anyone who needs help - things like colors can be changed very easily. Hi all,
what is the current status of this? Anyone still working on it?
Best, Lodewijk
I'm still working on this. I have been slowed down due to traveling but should be posting again soon (next week?) with more info.

Hi all, maybe I missed a mail in this thread but I can't find anything new since this mail, has there been something ? We are trying to gather our jury and would like to be able to tell them if we can offer them specific tools to select the winners in thousands of pics.
Thanks.

There will be a tool available if you're interested on it, although I can't speak about the extent to which it will be able to fill whatever expectations your potential jury may have.

Do you have it or you would (or want) build it?.
Maybe the geeks guys from chapters or community may help to build a new jury tool (to rule them all), if it not exists.

I'll be uploading a demo in a couple of hours (i.e., as soon as I figure out how do I want to do that) and will start a couple of threads around the next steps for building the jury tool.

Quick update about this:
I'm currently working with Ynhockey and JasonDC to upload the new jury tool to the Labs project[0] that was set up last year, I'll let you know when that's ready but please bear in mind that people are quite busy due to Wikimania (actually my bad timing's fault).

Hi,
I was wondering, do you need testers? I got a few offers during Wikimania of people that would love to test the tool (probably because they would like to see what it looks like ;-) )

Sure I do, my idea was to publish it as a project in Labs so that people coult try it out and give feedback. Ideally, people from every country interested in using the tool would try their worfklows and see if the tool is fit for the purpose or tell us why not.
I'm currently working on publishing the source code so that local tech teams can also start trying out installation instructions.

Yes, I finally got access to the labs project a couple of hours ago and will be uploading the latest version of the tool there.

I think it is important to make a tool that is mostly usable for a broad spectrum of countries. So I guess it depends on the features you want in :)
I would suggest to just add it to the page though, and indicate how critical it is - but to stick as much as possible to things that are appliccable in most countries.

This is really appreciated, last year the tool was good but in was developed unfortunately in short time.
How we can add features? It's a simple adding in the list or there is a place to discuss?

Hi all,
A couple of weeks ago I was talking with Lodewikj about the idea of having a configurable Jury Tool that would suit the need of most of the participating countries.
